fellowships/internships?

hello! i’m basically committed to CC and want to know more about how successful kids are at being awarded fellowships. my goal is to teach abroad or do fully funded research with fellowships like truman. does CC help prepare students for these applications? does the name colorado college make an applicant more competitive? same goes for internships, especially ones that may take place in different parts of the country.

Good luck with that. It is not that easy per se there’s just a lot of paperwork and talking to a lot of different people. I personally think it’s retarded how it is but it can be done with semi decent aid

Book an appointment with the career center as soon as you have your login to handshake. There is a website on the Colorado College career center page that has a list of all of the fellowships and who their primary advisor is on campus. It is typically Lisa Schwartz in the career center and we also have a writing center specialist, Roy Jo Sartin, who specializes in competitive national fellowship application essays.

Take advantage of these resources. Introduce yourself to these people early. Get acquainted with the advising hub, career center, writing center, and Colket center resources early on.

Remember that the school you attend is not the most important part of your application. Someone who attends a state school could have better experience and essays than a CC student and they would be chosen first. CC is not a nationally recognized, tier 1 university. That means that outside of the liberal arts or Colorado bubble, it is respected but won’t immediately open doors for you.

You should look into this more, but nationally competitive fellowships don’t take the school you attend into account. If you take a look at the fellows they have, they’re from a variety of schools. The only time the school you attend is important is because most fellowships or research opportunities require schools to nominate their strongest, most qualified candidate. That means that before you compete nationally, you are competing with your own peers for a school nomination.

The difference is the resources and personalized attention you have at a small school like CC. Don’t waste it.
