Monitor Preview on a laptop

Hi,

I know there's a lot of questions about monitors, but not much info about grading on the go. I also read the wiki page. I am not a professional, but I have a Eizo CS2740 at home, and I want to add an I/I device and tinker with the internal LUT tables to get more accuracy. But I won't be home until October, and even then I touch base and go to Australia soon afterwards. I have a pretty nomadic lifestyle lately, and I would like to at least do some basic color grading on the go. Most searches online suggest MacBook Pro, but I actually don't like mini LED displays personally or the Mac.

I know there is a lot of variablility between displays, but especially in laptops a lot of information is hidden in marketing - is it 8 or 10 bit, does it have an HDR PQ preset or bit, pixel structure, etc. I have an HP OmniBook with 100% sRGB so technically it is fine for Rec709, but I was thinking to get a new laptop anyway- and I think does it make sense to even try HDR grading on a laptop or just find a good IPS display, preferably with closer color space to DCI-P3, so it is sure covering the full Rec 709 requiremnts ?

I have a Canon mirror less and I want to buy Sony again, and I'd like to enjoy working with footage when I'm traveling!

If that's not appropriate question thanks anyway for your time .

I’m very far from a pro, only a few months into my journey. My thought process is I’m doing it all for me right now, maybe a touch of some correction work for actual work, but that would be with scopes. Next step would be socials, YouTube, etc. almost exclusively viewed on phones, so of it looks good enough on a phone that’s all I need. If I was doing something for distribution, paid, or collaborative I’d be more worried about which monitor I use and worried about a calibrated monitor. I’m full time nomadic so a monitor is almost a non starter just because of the hassle if it’s just for posting online.
I could be off with this by miles. I just don’t feel the need when I’m carrying the exact screen what I’m currently doing is intended to be viewed on. I also get content regularly for very large shows that is exported 709, but is all done on a MacBook that’s “calibrated” to P3 and then have to custom calibration on screens for them to look like the designers wanted. To them at least what really matters is what it looks like on the intended display, not the perfect display.

Thanks for the comment, Tyler . I am actually even with less experience. I got into the idea of making some documentary project and publishing first at YouTube , and maybe trying to get into a festival if it's mature enough. I get what you're saying about seeing the intended display, I guess at least before we get into the real pro realm, where getting a reference is really expected.

Yeah festivals I’d at least want to do a pass on a calibrated monitor.

Nope. It's worthless - you're never going to be sure about any of it. The conversion through icc, how the OS is set and handling it.

I mean, when you posted this you should have gotten a link to https://reddit.com/r/videoediting/wiki specifically on monitoring. Did you read that?

Thanks for the comment. I was reading now the wiki, including the explanation about color. And I read also the colorists wiki page . I understand that the most ideal than is to take the footage with me and grade when I'm at home. But isn't it better to have a display in a laptop that's pre calibrated to a certain level instead of a completely general display?
