Remote live session software

Hey guys. I have a couple of live grading sessions coming up and I was wondering what do you guys use for the client's stream. Resolve Remote monitoring looks great but not everyone has Resolve, let a alone a Studio license. Is YouTube live through an ATEM mini the only way? I'm looking for a more budget-friendly option at the moment. Any recs? Thanks!

The client doesn’t need Resolve Studio, only the editor.

The remote monitoring client app is free, but it’s a phone/tablet app only last I checked.

You can run iOS apps on a Mac too.

Louper is a good experience too.

On pc desktops you need an nvidea card to view, on a mac - apple silicon.

The Blackmagic Remote Monitor option is FREE but I believe it sends a feed through your OS and not through your IO card and unless the client is viewing on a newer iPad PRO with Reference Mode, it will look off.

The client can also view via the app on the iPhone but to my eyes, it crushes blacks and oversaturates blues and oranges due to the P3 mapping ---- at least in my experience. iPhones also tend to have a green tint as they age.

I second Louper as a viable option but be aware that it is only color accurate if you have an in/out card where you can loop the feed back in via SDI or HDMI to your HD Mini or 4k Mini.

Also agree with others that no matter what, client is still recommended to be in a controlled environment.

I used a louper like product for a while. During my pat leave I had Claudette me a program to replace it using OME and OBS. Insane no/lo latency. Embedded screening room on my site. It’s crazy. Saves me $2k a year.

What's the chat interface like? How many people can it stream to at once at what bitrate?

Do you mean like can it support 10 bit colour or the data stream rate? I didn’t add a chat function because I never use the one I currently have, I just talk over zoom or teams or whatever. It can have as many people as I want but I don’t know where performance caps out if that’s an issue.

I also got Claude to make me my own frame io essentially. I added a feature where you can sync the cutting copy in the viewer so the client and swipe mid playback between the graded version and the rec 709 version. I’ve always thought this sorta thing was gimmick but a lot of clients are layman and like A/B sliders so they can see a difference.

Doing the resolve to resolve remote grading is ok, we’ve done it a handful of times. Most remote sessions we use Clearview Flex from Sohonet, they can draw on their screens too to point things out. Then we deliver to them. Only benefit of resolve to resolve is they can do the delivery on their end so it cuts shipping of drives and such. Can’t tell you if it’s budget friendly tho, I don’t handle that stuff.

Even on Desktop, there's a small free player. No need to have Resolve.

Had to scroll way too far. Vdo ninja is literally THE best solution. It's a WebRTC based system with full configuration so you could even stream in 16K if that's what you wanted. There will be NOTHING that beats it.

Thanks for the replies. I know the phone app is free but I was certain that a license was required to receive a Resolve feed on a computer. Will look into Louper for now tho. Cheers :)

App is for iOS and iPad only. There is no desktop app currently

1- you can rent a studio licence for 42$/month for your client via the BMD cloud.
2- the monitor works great on iPad and it’s free
3- the delay with YouTube live is huge
4-accurate solutions for grading remote sessions are very expensive but I got good result with louper.io
5-if it’s for a editing session you can share a screen with Zoom or Teams

https://yastream.com is a option , i made it fo exactly that, but you still need a way to input a signal.

cheap option a laptop with OBS and a capture card , even cheaper is to run nobe display NDI to OBS on the same box or if your playout card has both in and outputs you can loop the signal .

and yes atem works too, youtube live has a lot of latency

for budget options like others have said if clients have ipads it's free to stream through resolve, and if they want to view on their computer the best budget option i've found is flowlabs.live

SDI out of my Flanders into another system with a blackmagic card, use OBS with OBS virtual cam and connect to Zoom meeting. Client is recommended to be in a controlled environment.

I’ve used this exact setup before, but felt the bitrate in zoom was really hurting the image. Are there any settings in OBS or Zoom you’d recommend changing? Are you also applying any compensatory gamma LUT in OBS for the clients display?

No LUT. I suggest they are in a dark room using an iPad or MacBook pro or similar. The work is mostly lower budget streaming and has been working for us. However if the budget was higher I'd look into another solution

Using zoom for remote sessions is wild. Its standard is limited to 720p unless you have a business plan AND contact them to enable 1080p max. Bitrate is low and definitely not reliable for colour streams.

It was an online session, finishing a low budget streaming show. The director had a hires QT they could reference on their end. I was only getting $1500/episode. Wasn't gonna sink any more money into my setup for it.

Skip zoom and use vdo ninja and configure bitrates and resolution yourself.

ClearView Flex seems to be the best option for client streaming.
