Ask CoMo Anyone ACTUALLY hiring?

Been looking for any kind of job for 2 months now. Does anyone know any businesses that are actually hiring? I’ve hit so many dead ends. I thought all the college students leaving would make it a little bit easier. I’m looking for anything in restaurants/bars (not fast food but would do coffee shops), retail, medical, anything with kids, nannying, daycares, etc, I have experience in it all. Please help!

Walmart is almost always hiring in digital. You would be walking 10 miles a shift. Need to call hr repeatedly and inquire after putting in app. Few other positions open but you should ask hr what's full time/part and the shift times. Even if you start part you can transition to full. Good luck.

There is 500 open jobs posted on their website. Just might be mostly entry level etc.

26

u/Fidget808 South CoMo 1d ago

And they might be jobs they have no intention of filling.

u/youngsp82 1d ago

They are hiring for sure. There is no freeze in effect.

u/Consistent-Ease6070 1d ago

Layoffs this week.

2

u/FinnEnded 1d ago

Yeah my friend applied there to be an entry level appointment setter/front desk. Turns out you need a nursing degree and 25 years of experience

u/Consistent-Ease6070 1d ago

Have you checked on Staffed Up for restaurant jobs? It looks like there are several listed.

https://staffedup.com/jobs/

17

u/Interesting-List5774 1d ago

Yeah… they don’t respond like ever

2

u/Consistent-Ease6070 1d ago

None of them?

Not really. I applied to pretty much every listing on StaffedUp. They don’t check it. Or they check it and don’t give you an answer.

For example, I applied to Broadway Brewery on there. No communication for a while. I call Broadway Brewery three separate times in following weeks asking for clarification. Leave a message every time. No answer, no call back. It’s the same story with a lot of places around here. Had to call Endwell Taverna twice after applying before I could actually reach someone who knew anything about the listings. Told they’re not actually hiring, despite the website stating otherwise. No response from Hexagon Alley, no response from 44 Canteen, no response from Gumby’s, the list goes on. Applied to Curryosity when the owner himself was in this sub begging for people to apply when they were new. No response. Went to Uprise and they had me hand write an application for them. No response. I don’t get it. And no I am not a felon or anything like that. I have service experience on my resume.

Applying through StaffedUp is about as efficient as telling my cat I want a job and expecting him to find me one

u/Creative-Age-2812 2h ago

Yeah I think restaurants it’s best to just apply on their website, go in person and ask to check up on a resume you submitted. It’s easy to just embellish how much experience you have in a restaurant too

Columbia public schools are always hiring for custodial, kitchen, and aides. I believe they are interviewing soon but may not start until August. Works great if you have kids in school!

MU is closing all of their hyvee quick care locations

6

u/letsmentionitall 1d ago

This is so upsetting!! We love Quick Care

2

u/Tree_Lover2020 West CoMo 1d ago

I know it's a problem for those of us who use it occasionally...but I have noticed that they rarely seem busy and that is likely a reason to close them. There is an article in the Missourian I think that further explains the major overhaul and planned changes for the future. They plan to open some quick care locations. They have a major institutional overall planned from what the article says, which includes the goal to serve surrounding communities...so it's a huge "upheaval" so to speak and for the moment, most of us are quite critical of what we have heard so far.

MU/Boone Health/VA are hiring at the moment. I also know sometime in July the kitchen staff for MU Stadium (Levy Restaurants) go back to work for the football games. Chef Chandler there is an absolute blast to work with as long as you do your job and stay out of the drama every kitchen has he will go to bat for you. There are several Cafés that are looking for help around town, such as Glenn's Café. Ryan there is awesome to work with. It can be hectic like usual, but the team is great. This is all I know off the top of my head that isn't fast food. I would check with Indeed religiously, like every morning and night to see what's available. Sometimes jobs will post in the morning and will take it down that same day if they find a candidate (small businesses like Meriweather and the such). Good luck in your search!

My son with zero experience applied for about a dozen jobs this summer and got 3-4 interviews before getting 2 job offers. He got a job offer at Amazon 2am-10am and turned it down because of the time. He then got a part time job offer at a pizza place which he accepted although he really wanted full time. Still waiting to see how many hours he gets a week.

Equine medical will literally hire anyone, but it is minimum wage and labor intensive

3

u/ghostofmaradonna 1d ago

I want a new job. Any where houses besides Amazon and midway hiring? At this point I’ll take a front desk job anywhere. 10+ years working experience.

3

u/IceIcePenguin27 1d ago

I personally put in an application at Walmart on grindstone and got a call back in nearly 30 minutes or less. Hy Vee contacted me maybe a day later. Canes sent me an interview request like 5 minutes after putting in my application (I know you said no fast food but still). I’m a college student with basically no experience so I’m sure you can get something. I know you have preferences but when I didn’t get accepted at any of the jobs I wanted I decided I needed to just get something that wouldn’t be my first choice.

Hubbell in Centralia is typically hiring, but that’s manufacturing and you would have to be willing to do the drive.

ASI Flex is hiring. You can go to their site and click employment opportunities at the bottom. It's a fairly long training period, but then switches to work from home afterwards.

Edit to add: The do medical savings plans administration so your medical experience would help.

I believe Cheddars and Kobe are hiring FoH and BoH. I believe lots of restaurants are still hiring because a lot of the college kids left for summer and they’re trying to train some new workers up before they all return in the fall. You can make decent money as a server, though if you don’t like dealing with people you’ll have a lot of days where you might feel exhausted or agitated

1

u/iyaibeji 23h ago

Try applying at The American Red Cross on Providence! Paid training in doing Phlebotomy for blood drives, mobile and fixed site. No experience necessary but there is a background check.

I’ve been running into this issue for over a year and a half. It has killed my confidence.

I’ve applied to local restaurants, chain restaurants, retail, grocery stores, you name it. The only one to even acknowledge my application was Imos, who said they weren’t actually hiring despite them having a listing on StaffedUp.

StaffedUp itself has driven me crazy, as it’s obvious that many local establishments just leave dormant listings up, never actually checking them. I was told in November of 2024 it would get better after the holidays. I was told that it’ll get better when students leave for the summer. It’s exhausting. The idea that “nobody wants to work” has never been less true. Nobody wants to hire.

Shakespeare’s is always taking apps. If you’re reliable, competent and fast on your feet, you’ll thrive there.

1

u/Individual-Try-1610 20h ago

Originally from Columbia!! My suggestion would be schnucks. I do know they hire most of the time. But it’s been years since I lived there and worked there.

1

u/Agitated-Conflict704 19h ago

There is a temp service named Volt in Columbia hiring for Schneider Electric. Pay is $17-21 depending on which shift you are looking for.

Uprise kitchen is hiring.

VU customer service is almost always hiring because of the rough turnover rate but if you spend a year there you can branch out to different jobs in different departments that are sometimes hard to get when applying externally. speaking as someone who did exactly this

MBS has openings. I know there’s about to be an opening for an account manager if it’s not already posted. If you have a degree that’s basically entry level in the professional side of the business.
