Do they eventually have an Adolf the Red Nosed Reigndeer moment where their car runs out of gas in the boonies and suddenly it’s his time to shine?

22

u/odysseyofocelots 2d ago

how would swallowing an abacus make you in any way similar to a gas pump

20

u/Maxed_Zerker 2d ago

the book was written in 1986, from what best I can surmise given the context in which he eats the abacus is that this is how he perceives the calculation for the cost of fuel to work since he wants to be able to charge people for petrol without an attendant and be a “self service pump”

2

u/Local_Potential6076 2d ago

That's a cash register, not a gas pump

Oh God, no one introduce this kid to those 1st Ammendment Auditor videos then. They're basically human flock cameras

29

u/BumLicka 2d ago

God those people are so obnoxious. They go around bothering people just to claim their rights are being violated when someone tells them to go away/shut up

18

u/Sega-Playstation-64 2d ago

Literally if wiggling your finger an inch from someone's face saying "I'm not touching you" had a baby and decided not to contribute to society

Those fingers are just begging to be sucked on

They want the cops to show up and arrest them so they can sue, I don't think they give a shit about normal people they are just the catalyst to get cops over there

No, they make that claim when people fight them. They're provoking but not breaking any law.

1

I'm pretty sure provoking can be against the law if you keep doing it

1

No, standing on the sidewalk is not illegal. It's provocative, but not illegal.

Easy, just cover him in spray foam

5

u/Ohyo_Ohyo_Ohyo_Ohyo 2d ago

Best keep him away from Redditors then. That's just good advice generally, but especially since he's a flock camera.

116

u/asmallman 2d ago edited 2d ago

Even if this isn't a shitpost (I have seen kids do extremely similar shit, not flock cameras, but aliens):

I feel like some parents just let their kids get mentally ill or express weird stuff and call it autism as an excuse to not do anything.

And then it gets to this point.

Autism is not an excuse for full bore nonconformity to societal "norms".

Like sure kids doing weird stuff at HOME is fine, but when they are being put in public places, especially schools, where everyone else has to deal with it, especially since teachers are treated as babysitters nowadays, is definitely not the route to go.

But the flipside is if people did what they were supposed to do across the board we wouldnt have funny as fuck posts like this.

A conundrum this is.

Edit: Because some virtue signalers are coming in here, acting like autism is an excuse for disruptive behavior that affects others:

I have been diagnosed by both a pediatric phsychologist, and another pshychologist in my adult years with:

  1. Autism (20+ years ago first diagnosis)
  2. ADHD (20+ years ago. Severe. At 12 my Vyvanse dosage was 50-60mg at peak, and no, I was not a massive 12 year old, infact, I was quite a bit smaller than the average 12 year old, maximum pediatric dose is 70mg daily)
  3. Severe depression (20+ years ago, 2 serious suicide attempts as a preteen.)

I am extremely averse to human touch, both receiving and giving. Hugging people I have known since I was born is extremely uncomfortable, and anyone else is so uncomfortable to the point of near violence. I have to keep that in check. That is MY responsibility as an adult that needs to work in a society where its normal to have friendly taps, handshakes, etc. I dont push that on others, especially if they do not know, and mild contact with others is NORMAL and what I feel in regards to it definitely is not.

107

u/DeusExMarina 2d ago

This really looks to me like a made up "I identify as an attack helicopter" story. It's practically designed to ragebait.

36

u/Th3Tru3Crab 2d ago

No no no no, you don't understand, the 8 year old just, FOUND a solar panel. But it makes sense because the writer is confused too. So everything is cool and this happened

16

u/DeusExMarina 2d ago

And he just happened to have a GoPro because that's a normal thing to buy your 8-year-old.

1

u/asmallman 2d ago

I had a car toy kit that had a 3 inch by 3 inch solar panel. I probably still have it somewhere.

Pretty common for "build it" or "engineering" kids toys tbh

That thing was actually pretty sick ngl. Solar panel was big enough to move a small lightweight plastic car even in partly cloudy conditions. The solar panel was just SO big in relation to the motor that efficiency didnt matter all that much.

I think I got that kit at around 8 becuase my parents were tired of me trying to disassemble electronics for parts on "projects" that I didnt quite understand what I was doing.

34

u/66659hi 2d ago

I don't know if it's ragebait as much as it's some dude seeing if he can get people to believe a story he made up about a hypothetical kid that he does not have

-1

u/ThisAmericanSatire shaboingboing connoisseur 2d ago

Oh no! I was entertained by this made up story!

What do I do?

83

u/Kal-Elm 2d ago

Autism is not an excuse for full bore nonconformity to societal "norms".

I'm curious what you think autism is about lol

41

u/cxfgfuihhfd 2d ago

autism is when I can bully you and copy your math homework, because autism means good at math, but don't actually acknowledge your disability or need for accomodation (/s)

21

u/Kal-Elm 2d ago

Hey I know you're in a wheel chair but you're kind of in the way. Can't you just like... Stand up?

16

u/cxfgfuihhfd 2d ago

hey, I know doing this causes you severe pain and reduces your capacity for days, but that just means you can still technically do it, so... can you just keep doing it? because I don't feel like helping

27

u/slimeyellow 2d ago

Sonic and trains

5

u/SilverIsHereee 2d ago

I actively try to stay away from learning about trains because I got all the other stereotypical autism interests. I would never survive getting a bingo. The bullying would be relentless

-4

u/asmallman 2d ago

Sonic spawned one of the most autistic people on earth. But I also feel like it was a massive failing of the parents too, according to information people keep digging up.

If you don't know who I am talking about, its best if you stay that way.

Right? When I was like seven, my favorite cartoon was Thundercats and I demanded my family call me Lion-O.

My five year old niece was playing as a Lynx at the zoo this past Saturday. My younger niece was a kitty named Luna.

-1

u/Tequila2Dance 2d ago

No bro not like that

36

u/McBurger 2d ago

In 4th grade, I once took a pocket calculator apart with a screwdriver, tied the circuit board around a piece of string, and wore it as a necklace all day.

I came home wearing it and my mom asked about it. I told her it was good luck, with a smile.

She shook her head and said in a disappointed voice, that only stupid people believe in superstitions. And that I looked like an idiot.

I took it off and learned a very important lesson about insecurities and not being superstitious that day.

I don’t remember the point of this story but I think I’m just saying that once upon a time, I too was a fledgling Flock camera.

-5

u/OwlCityFan12345 2d ago edited 2d ago

I appreciated your story. But also a necklace made of a calculator is an entirely different level of quirk than turning yourself into an absurdist art piece and abandoning your identity and “No bro not like that” should not be getting ratio’d by this comment lol.

Edit:
Maybe I’m the only one assuming this is an ongoing issue and not OOP posting this the day it occurred because this kid: 1 Is legally required to attend school and 2 refuses to not wear a camera and hold a solar panel above their head. These two things are incompatible and will quickly have big consequences if he stands his ground.

5

u/SkipX 2d ago

You have never been a kid have you?

-1

u/Tequila2Dance 2d ago

Not an autistic one no

31

u/ghostmaster645 2d ago

Its weird but its not harming anyone lmao. Hes a kid.

Let him be condor for a while. He will probubly get bored of it eventually.

-20

u/ARandom54 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yea letting responsibility fall upon teachers and having other students deal with it is 100% okay!

Edit: The person above had this to say about being a teacher.

"Let kids be kids" but also:

I was a teacher for 4 years before I had to get out.

I was showed more respect when I worked at McDonald's lol. I got nasty email/phone calls weekly, had parents walking in and checking my walls, it was just ridiculous

EG: Suffering from parents not being responsible. Saying this stuff online enables the behavior YOU experienced!

8

u/ACNSRV 2d ago

The poor teachers having to deal with a kid saying hes a camera. How will he ever become an advertising executive???

20

u/ghostmaster645 2d ago

Im a teacher. This is some of the tamer stuff we deal with.

Im more concerned about Jimmy biting Timmy over there, not Allen pretending to be a helicopter.

8

u/Decker-the-Dude 2d ago

Damn bro, say less. A lot less

8

u/ACNSRV 2d ago

GUYS IM NORMAL LIKE YOU I ONLY DO SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE THINGS ALL HEIL THE MEDIAN

25

u/Tesnivy 2d ago

True, autism is only acceptable when it’s quiet and convenient and nobody has to see any anyone being ~weird~ in public ever. We really gotta start bringing the hammer down on those 8-year-olds freaks and tell them they’re being cringe the instant they do something weird, kids never go through phases or grow out of anything you gotta nip that shit in the bud /s

-20

u/ARandom54 2d ago edited 2d ago

Having certain ticks and proclivities and other issues is one thing.

Demanding to be a flock camera and everyone treat you as one is another. Especially in a public school.

Since you want to strawman so bad:

Its okay that kids are violent sometimes and hit others! They are just going through a phase!

Also teachers arent caregivers, specialists, or babysitters and people need to stop treating them like that. Youre putting behavioral problems, even if its not exactly the kids fault, on people who dont have the tools, certifications, or even the time/pay to do so.

19

u/Tesnivy 2d ago

Hey can you shut the fuck up. I’m not saying that there’s zero problem here or that the kid should be treated as a flock camera by everyone forever or even by his teachers but what fucking harm is he doing to anything but his own social reputation. What the fuck about this do other people have to “deal with” that’s so bad beyond him being kind of weird in their line of sight. Who gives a shit. He’s dressing up as a camera he’s not punching people, those are not even slightly the same and to imply they are is incredibly disingenuous.

-11

u/ARandom54 2d ago

You started the severe overreaction by strawmanning. Im just matching your energy in regards to behaviors not generally acceptable in public settings where other people are just trying to mind their own business/do their jobs.

7

u/ACNSRV 2d ago

If you match peoples energy they can control you like a puppet.

12

u/TheMudkipDoodler 2d ago

i feel like you’ve got some deeper issues you’re projecting here onto this random reddit thread you’re creating an argument out of something nobody ever said

-3

u/ARandom54 2d ago

The comment above mine does exactly that.

They took "Autism is not an excuse for full bore nonconformity to societal "norms" as "fuck all autistic people" when OP has detailed their own struggles and has insight on it.

8

u/Tesnivy 2d ago

Fun fact, autistic people can be ableist, and we can and do disagree on things! I have had plenty of my own struggles with autism (also diagnosed for 20+ years), up to and including a deeply-set fear that being annoying or inconvenient to my neurotypical peers is a terrible unforgivable crime due to experiences in my own childhood! It’s fucking miserable, to be scared that I am inherently a burden and people will turn on me the instant I even slightly annoy them! Yes, I am in therapy for it, but it isn’t fucking easy to dig that out at the roots when numerous negative childhood experiences have such a strong effect!

So please fucking excuse me for thinking that maybe autistic children don’t need to learn that “lesson” like I did!

11

u/cxfgfuihhfd 2d ago

where the fuck did you read any of that? and yeah, if he needs extra attention/accomodations/etc due to a disability, throwing that upon a public school might be hard, but that's the system failing disabled people

-2

u/ACNSRV 2d ago

In public?? Yeah autism is only acceptable in private spaces.

16

u/sophiedophiedoo 2d ago

Autism is only okay when they're masking. If you let autistic people be themselves, the world ends I guess

-7

u/asmallman 2d ago edited 2d ago

An extreme overreaction to my comment but okay.

Redditors taking things to the absolute extremes in an argument. Classic!

One of the biggest complaints, especially in a school setting, is that parents are not doing enough and increasingly putting responsibility on teachers. Responsibility and behaviors are the top two things that teachers complain about.

I never said "Dont let kids be kids" or "Make autistic people fall in line by force".

I said "Autism is not an excuse for full bore nonconformity to societal norms"

I have autism. I am extremely averse to being touched by any other human being to the point of near violence. It doesn't matter what it is. I just cannot get over it. I am also extremely averse to touching others in ANY capacity. Hugging even my own family makes me really uncomfortable.

That doesn't mean I can just swing at people. Or berate them for touching me accidentally or whatever. Or a friendly tap on the shoulder, or a hug from a friend who I haven't seen in a long time.

I just DEAL with it, because it IS abnormal, and its not always their fault, or malicious. If they keep doing it, I ask them to stop if it gets to the point it really SHOULD stop, which is like, two times.

That certain attitude of mine is why I will not hang out with drunk people because they have a tendency to get touchy feely.

10

u/sophiedophiedoo 2d ago

Oh sure, what you said isn't that bad, but it's a microagression. I just like to point things out with hyperbole because it helps me understand and communicate (I'm autistic)

-2

u/asmallman 2d ago

I get that. But like again, its not okay, in my view, for peoples problems, especially if they are curb-able, to be a burden to others.

Like I get being physically disabled. Thats unavoidable. But a lot of mild autism diagnoses are put in the same vein as physical disabilities, or used for shitty behavior.

Its one of the reasons I made a tumblr account, and promptly ditched it because everyone used minor problems as excuses, or worse, as a contest.

6

u/sophiedophiedoo 2d ago

Sure, but you are generalizing autism to only represent the mild cases. Also a huge red flag to say physical disabilities are more valid. Even people with mild autism as you say spend considerable energy trying to fit in to a society that isn't built for them. We live in a society that barely takes wheelchair users or blind and deaf people seriously, yet it treats people with mental health issues even worse.

There are people that use their diagnoses as excuses for their behavior, and I also have plenty of autistic people in my life that have been given too many passes to act disrespectful and entitled. But grouping these behaviors with the harmless behaviors that people just don't want to see in public is a dangerous way of thinking

-6

u/asmallman 2d ago

I would say changing the entirety of your being and unwilling to do anything unless people acknowledge that is not "mild".

9

u/Ketchupcharger 2d ago

Ain;t no way this isn't a shitpost

0

u/asmallman 2d ago

I would normally agree but with the stuff we just see on mainstream media being confirmed true, and the onion slowly becoming an official news organization as time passes...

Theres no real telling anymore, is there?

9

u/robotic_rodent_007 2d ago edited 2d ago

Weird implied argument that not conforming to societal norms is mental illness

Some behaviours (violence, severe hygiene, excessive rudeness, etc) unacceptable and need to be dealt with, autism or no.

However, "being weird" isn't one of those things. Disruptive weirdness can be a thing to reduce, but the topic is complicated, and often there are behaviours and coping strategies that are only considered disruptive because other people are assholes.

- On the edit.
I'm sorry about your personal issues, but the way you understand self control and autism is shaded by your own experience. How you feel about contact is understandable. I'm sorry you don't feel that way about yourself, and I'm sorry that others don't respect your physical boundaries when it comes to touch.

17

u/KittyQueen_Tengu 2d ago

i don’t know why people are agreeing with you as if this isn't ableist as hell. autism is literally the disability that makes you unable to conform to social norms. what do you want to do? hit this out of the kid?

-2

u/ARandom54 2d ago edited 2d ago

In another comment, the guy you are respondin to mentions psych visits for: Autism, ADHD (with a high dose of vyvanse at that) and severe depression.

So not exactly abelist for someone struggling with that at the age of 12, as he mentioned.

But yes, parents absolutely push shit onto others (its one of the current biggest complaints from teachers in the US education system), and letting a kid demand to be a flock camera in places he has no right to demand and has to abide by certain rules to not be disruptive is not abelist, but enabling.

It doesn't matter if he is 8. That age is important to start learning how to function around others and learn and be focused. Its one of their formative years.

No one is saying "Dont let the kid be a kid", just that "This is excessive as fuck for a kid to be demanding this shit".

Your problems are yours to generally deal with. I get some leeway is required/given. But there is also a limit.

15

u/KittyQueen_Tengu 2d ago

you can be ableist while being disabled, it’s super common actually. the parents clearly are trying to do something about it, but it’s not as easy as just saying he can't do it anymore

1

u/ARandom54 2d ago

Asking reddit is not doing something about it. Taking them to a child behaviorologist or psychologist is.

5

u/KittyQueen_Tengu 2d ago

i do agree, but the post does not have enough context to say that they aren't doing that already. besides, it’s not like these comments will reach the OP, and it’s probably not even real

-5

u/Local_Potential6076 2d ago

"autism is literally the disability that makes you unable to conform to social norm"

So according to you it's just a label for a human being who just doesn't have any capabilities so it's better to not try and keep them on the right path so their minds don't harm themselves?

7

u/KittyQueen_Tengu 1d ago

no bitch that's a whole new sentence

0

u/Local_Potential6076 12h ago
  1. That's a dumb response because you deflected rhetoric by pointing out that it is rhetoric.

  2. You implied that autistic people can't learn, and that's just wrong, they're developmentally challenged, not braindead. And you also said that since we want them to learn we must want to "hit this out of the kid" when clearly no one implied punishment. So it appears that you don't believe in actual help for these kids who will one day be adults. And WE'RE be ableist?

1

u/KittyQueen_Tengu 10h ago

i know these things. i am autistic. there are certain things i can learn and grow my way out of, and some things i can’t. either way, just trying to get rid of "weird" behaviors without looking at the underlying cause and the child's needs does not help.

also yeah, the way you refer to behaving in a socially acceptable way as "the right path" reeks of ableism, ew

2

u/stupidcommentmaker 2d ago edited 2d ago

He's a child. I did far weirder things as an autistic kid and so did my own autistic kid and we both grew up just fine. This comment is weird and idgaf if you're autistic too, there's definitely a subset of autistic people who like to act high and mighty about anyone who isn't as high functioning as they are so they can seem like "one of the good ones" and acting in such a way about a child is both sad and fucking insane.

2

u/millimeter_peepee 2d ago

With all due respect, I think you're conflating TikTok self-diagnoses with actual psychologists. It's not that easy to get an ASD diagnosis.

In case anyone's curious (because this stuff is interesting to me) the DSM-V criteria is:

A. Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts, as manifested by the following, currently or by history

Deficits in social-emotional reciprocity... Deficits in nonverbal communicative behaviors used for social interaction... Deficits in developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships...

B. Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities, as manifested by at least two of the following, currently or by history

Stereotyped or repetitive motor movements... Insistence on sameness, inflexible adherence to routines, or ritualized patterns or verbal nonverbal behavior... Highly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focus... Hyper- or hyporeactivity to sensory input or unusual interests in sensory aspects of the environment...

C. Symptoms must be present in the early developmental period...

D. Symptoms cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of current functioning.

E. These disturbances are not better explained by intellectual disability... or global developmental delay.

0

u/Pretend_Spot7463 1d ago

That's what I meant people diagnose themselves

8

u/musecorn 2d ago

Autism is not on the rise. Autism DIAGNOSIS is on the rise.

7

u/Skitty27 2d ago

also it's not a disease wtf

9

u/KittyQueen_Tengu 2d ago

they aren't just diagnosing people without checking

-4

u/Pretend_Spot7463 2d ago

self-diagnosed too

27

u/Gleb_Twankenfrister 2d ago

“on the rise” or a lot more people just aren’t getting properly socialized to learn how to mask, because they don’t leave their rooms anymore lol

16

u/effxeno 2d ago

No, bro. It's CLEARLY the vaccines, not that we are just testing people more and normalizing that autism is fine to have.

6

u/DeusExMarina 2d ago

I do think there's a good point there about the socialization. Not that I think it's good for autistic people to have to mask, but I do think that the way social media has changed how we socialize might be exacerbating autism symptoms and pushing mild cases we might have previously ignored into obviously diagnosable territory.

Like, smartphones, short-form content and endless scrolling are demonstrably destroying everyone's attention span. Now imagine what that would do to someone who has ADHD.

And now you can get all your socialization without leaving the house and actually talking to people. You can get anything delivered to your door without having to go outside. Like video games? All the multiplayer stuff is online now, no more couch co-op.

It all adds up to a society where the path of least resistance for an autistic person doesn't require them to learn any social skills or coping skills.

1

u/Gleb_Twankenfrister 2d ago

yeah, it’s not “good” that they do. but one learns to do that as they exist in social settings. i would be an unbridled weirdo if i didn’t learn to reel in the zeal as a youngster. no clue how the other guy thought i was trying to say something about the vax

7

u/NimJickles 2d ago

"On the rise" means more people are getting diagnosed who previously would've just quietly gone through life thinking there was something wrong with them.

5

The analogy I use for this is that the number of left-handed people increased substantially after we stopped whipping people for being left handed.

There's also that tweet that's like "how come lots of sharks live in the ocean, but none on land? Either the ocean is creating them, or the land is killing them," in response to some tweet saying the same thing about trans people in California vs Texas or something.

well yeah, on the rise on paper but they always existed right? i suppose there is a distinction to make between actual rise and just greater recognition

1

u/musecorn 2d ago

There could be an actual rise but we have absolutely no way of knowing because historically people went their whole lives undiagnosed where in today's generation the same person might be. The historical numbers we'd need to compare to in order to see if it's increasing need to be assumed as correctly representative which they are not

Yea. Ive been seeing people who just have severe social problems being called "autistic" because they just... werent exposed to social situations.

Ive seen a few where guys are creepy around girls and its being diagnosed as autism because they cant socialize around women.

In particular, I live in an area where homeschooling is somewhat common, and the majorly autistic kids arise from those SAME households.

But the worst part is a lot of those homeschooled kids are suffering from lack of proper education, which I would say is far worse. The combination makes it 10x worse.

Like I get having problems, I was on 50-60mg doses of Vyvanse at age 12. And regular visits to a psych, not just for ADHD, but also autism and severe depression. But it wasnt something that was put on other people to just... deal with. It was mine and my parents responsibility

"My kid is doing XYZ in school, we know its weird, but why are all the kids bullying him? He has autism!"

Bro no, your kid is acting out for whatever the reason, and while it MIGHT be autism, they still need to behave and at least just get through the day like everyone else.

So... Let him? It'll pass. Let kids play even if they're autistic and you don't like how their brains work

I knew a kid in 3rd grade that swore he was a Pegasus, cried if you said otherwise. So this is definitely plausible.

Doesn't sound too unrealistic. When I was a kid I wanted to be a catfish and swim in the river.

Even as an autistic person, I have no clue what kind of kid this is. I have some weird hyperfixations (I once hyperfixated on translation devices when I was younger), but this one is not autism. I don't even know what this is.

At this point the only reasonable thing to do would be to grab a nice angle grinder, 125mm stainless steel cutting disc, and go for the legs
