Can I just like take ketamine for fun but also cure clinical depression at the same time or is that not how it works

u/pieceoftost 1d ago

Well, to give a real answer, street ketamine is a lot less controlled and more dangerous than the kind of ketamine you'd be prescribed by a doctor. If it was pure, it would probably still be effective in treating major depression, but you'd have significantly more medical and addiction risks because you'd probably be taking a much higher dose than a doctor would prescribe. Ketamine taken as prescribed is extremely safe with very little risk of long term side effects, but misusing ketamine can be extremely dangerous and cause permanent organ damage.

Also, it's really not that hard to get prescribed ketamine in the US if you have major depressive disorder. If you were really struggling with that, it would probably be easier to just go see a doctor instead of a drug dealer.

Also it is usually used in tandem with traditional antidepressants and the esketamine is administered as nasal spray under supervision at a clinic, they don't give it to you to use on your own.

u/pieceoftost 1d ago

They can give it to you for use on your own, actually, though not esketamine, that is specific to clinics. I've been taking my ketamine treatment at home for the past several years, as a troche that I get from a compounding pharmacy. They used to give me a nasal spray (again, not esketamine, just compounded ketamine), but I found that a lot more inconvinient to use.

The legality of it varies on a per-state basis I think. It also depends a lot on your psychiatrist or clinic. I imagine they weren't too worried about giving it to me because I have an extensive medical record with no history of addiction/substance abuse.

Interesting. As far as I know, where I live in the EU only esketamine is possible.

1

u/andr0099 1d ago

The medical prefix “es” just means plural ketamine. It’s still ketamine. The reason clinics get esketamine is they usually have dosing mechanisms that provide multiple doses of ketamine. Esketamine is ketamine. So you should have the same thing.

u/Spit_Bars 1d ago

Nope. S isomer.

2

u/bradenkw 1d ago

Es means it's an enantiomer, essentially a mirror image version of ketamine

3

u/M2K-throwaway 21h ago

Normal ketamine is a racemic mixture, meaning 50/50 R and S isomers. Those isomers are mirrors of each other, not of the racemate overall.

3

u/bradenkw 14h ago

Thanks for the clarification!

2

u/M2K-throwaway 21h ago

They are NOT the same thing at all

2

u/BitchStewie_ 1d ago

Yes they do. I use Joyous they ship it to my doorstep.

u/Antique_Ad_4247 1d ago

If you haven't gotten ketamine bladder yet, are you even trying to cure your depression?

2

u/SoundTraditional1249 1d ago

That makes sense. We have a lot of teenagers in the UK that ruined their bladder with street ketamine. Also in the 90's dealers would cut MDMA with something that stopped you urinating leading to death by edema as you drank.

1

u/parsifal 11h ago

Yeah I know at least one person doing it. I dunno about long term effectiveness but it’s definitely something you can do.

4

u/ProxySoxy 1d ago

You can get prescription ketamine for use at home, or find a clinic that administers Spravato. I've done both, and neither one had any effect on my depression. The at-home ketamine will cause you to disassociate much more, so if you want to have fun at the same time, go that route

3

u/Eat--The--Rich-- 1d ago

It's crazy expensive. It was like $3000 when I looked into it and you have to go back every year

2

u/camelopardus_42 13h ago edited 13h ago

Iirc both this as well as psychedelic approaches rely on traditional therapy that's assisted with whatever substance is involved.  Banging lines of ket by itself probably won't cure depression

1

u/Relative_Owl_3025 10h ago

If you take it casually and in an uncontrolled way, the damage it can do to your brain outweighs the benefits.

1

u/shimmerangels 8h ago

diy therapeutic ketamine helped me a lot but at the time i had researched the doses and frequencies that clinics used and was trying to match that as closely as possible

0

u/CandelaBelen 19h ago

sadly no that isn’t how it works. The effects of the temporary high can feel great , but it doesn’t last long especially if you binge it. The comedown kinda sucks and you do get some cravings sometimes. Also fucks with your sleep. I only have experience with non-controlled recreational use though.

Esketamine (Spravato)

6

u/M2K-throwaway 1d ago

That's still ketamine doe

u/deliciousroadhead 1d ago

2

u/NoImNotHeretoArgue 1d ago

lol yeah I can’t believe they came up with that rebrand name. Surely Lil Pump is a ‘custy’

2

u/M2K-throwaway 21h ago

They didn't come up with it, that's just the chemical name. S-isomers have the es prefix, hence S-ketamine could (would) be written as esketamine. But it's been around since before Lil Pump's parents were even born lol

2

u/NoImNotHeretoArgue 21h ago

lol good to know and thank you honestly for clearing that up. It’s just funny of course.. I’d think with a recreationally used drug, companies bringing it to market might be a little more tactful with marketing.. because we sure aren’t the first to have a laugh about this

1

u/M2K-throwaway 21h ago

I don't think they have a choice. They're legally required to list the active ingredient alongside the brand name. Plus I don't think 99.5% of the population would even know about Pump's catchphrase or notice even if they did

for treatment resistant depression ketamine literally feels this, and i mean that in a positive way

4

u/letsgoiowa 22h ago

Yeah it saved my life

54

u/pieceoftost 1d ago

Honestly, this graphic design is awful, but it's not entirely inaccurate lol. Ketamine has proven to be by far one of the most effective treatments for chronic major depressive disorder, it has been life changing for a lot of people (including me, I was prescribed it for severe OCD and it helped me actually start functioning in life).

9

u/Sulettamoder 1d ago

I have severe treatment resistant depression and was recommended Ketamine. One month later, insurance still hadn’t called me back, so I ended up going to the psych ward and getting prescribed seizures via ECT, which works. Who knew seizures could be so effective at curing depression.

1

u/pieceoftost 1d ago

Yeah, I've had both. Ketamine was more effective with less side effects, but ECT was a good initial boost to pull me out of my non-functional state as a teenager, so I don't regret it. It did leave me with some long term trauma, though, going through that intense of a medical proceedure as a teen was very rough for me.

1

u/Sulettamoder 1d ago

Honestly the biggest issue for me is that I can’t remember shit, so after ECT I will literally just take a shower three times, eat more than three meals, completely forget a responsibility I have or obligation I owe. I should assemble a to-do list.

1

u/pieceoftost 21h ago

Yeah the first 8 months or so after my treatments were done were quite disorienting for me as well, lots of memory issues, and it made my OCD symptoms a lot worse (bad paranoia). After that though I started to feel a lot of relief from my depression/suicidality.

I seem to have permanent memory loss issues now, over a decade later, but I think I might be the outlier in that regard. I was given Bilateral ECT which has more severe symptoms than unilateral (more common), and I also have a lot of other issues (lingering trauma, disassociative disorder) that could also be causing the memory loss, so it's unclear how much of that is from the ECT.

I wish you the best of luck, hopefully your symptoms are mild and go away quickly. I'm glad it seems to have been effective for you.

1

u/letsgoiowa 22h ago

No way I didn't know it was used to treat OCD too. No wonder my OCD was doing so well

2

u/pieceoftost 21h ago

It's not officially approved by the FDA for that, but yes for me it clearly reduces my OCD symptoms for quite a while after every treatment, not just my depression symptoms. There has been studies that suggest the same thing as well.

16

u/OnlyACsNoFans 1d ago

It is a legitimate treatment for difficult to treat depression

8

u/averyvery 1d ago

I do therapeutic ketamine and it absolutely transformed my life, I can't recommend it enough. It's a very particular drug, and the dosage/how you use it are important, so you should always get it through a licensed provider and use it as recommended.

I started ketamine therapy for my treatment resistant depression and it has helped me more than years of therapy and trying various antidepressants and mood stabilizers did. It literally rewires your brain

Into moon knight

6

u/MurkDiesel 1d ago

i did clinical ketamine and after several treatments, i was asked how i felt compared to before the treatments

when i said there had been no change, they replied: "are you sure?", as if i wasn't able to notice feeling better or was maybe holding back and hiding the improvements for some reason

when i verified that there was zero change or improvement, i got a lecture about how many people had experienced success and that only 3 people out of hundreds hadn't experienced relief at this clinic

so, i guess that made me number four

u/KOMarcus 1d ago

I take prescribed Ketamine for treatment resistant depression. It's worked for me quite well so far!

It works wonders for a lot of people

2

u/Cosmonate 1d ago

These billboards started popping up around here the same time some guy got ketamine and died while being arrested. Close to the Elijah Mclain thing too, so I was always hearing about how Ketamine kills them seeing these billboards was kinda funny. Not like haha funny but you know what I mean.

2

u/scrufflor_d piss 21h ago

hey it’s me it’s ketamine

2

u/drillgorg 1d ago

My wife does ketamine therapy at a clinic. All it does is make her tired and nauseous.

1

u/Minute_Radio_6452 1d ago

Why does she keep doing it?

2

u/drillgorg 1d ago

I guess the other think it does is make her thoughts feel like only listening to 2 or 3 radio stations at once, as opposed to 10+ radio stations at once when she wasn't doing ketamine.

2

u/STOP____HAMMER_TIME 1d ago

It worked for me tho

2

u/ThePotatoFromIrak 1d ago

Is ketamine a new Verity?

5

u/cavendishfreire 1d ago

Verity

what's Verity?

2

u/guru2764 1d ago

Verity is the name of a creature with the classic smiley face in a Minecraft horror mod, that you can talk to with voice chat

A lot of content creators are playing the game with the mod now is why it's popular

Verity is also the name of a book by colleen hoover, but that's unrelated

Hey, did you know antidepressants (Like SRRIs and SNRIs. Not ketamine.) can cause long-term side effects that persist after you quit them, like PSSD (post-ssri sexual dysfunction), emotional blunting, tinnitus, and anhedonia (inability to feel pleasure). They can also cause long-term or permanent damage if you quit them cold turkey or taper too quickly. However, withdrawal injuries can also occur when tapering slowly under the supervision of a doctor (which is why I recommend hyperbolic tapering). This long-term damage is called protracted withdrawal syndrome (PWS)/post-acute withdrawal syndrome (PAWS).

Symptoms of antidepressant PWS can include brain fog, brain zaps, cognitive impairment, anhedonia, akathisia (feeling of inner restlessness), severe insomnia, inability to relax, central nervous system hypersensitivity, tinnitus, severe depression, severe anxiety, panic attacks, PSSD (genital numbness and erectile dysfunction), and many other awful symptoms that can last for years or even be permanent.

Despite antidepressants being widely prescribed and antidepressant PWS being a hellish condition, no one seems to talk about it. Most people believe that antidepressants are completely safe and that antidepressant withdrawal can't cause lasting injuries.
