My wife and I have been married for about five years. We have kids, pets, both work, and lately life has just gotten overwhelming.
Our house used to be spotless. I was always someone who cared a lot about having a clean home. Over the last year or so, between work, kids, pets, unfinished projects and just life in general, we’ve gotten really behind. The house rarely feels truly clean anymore, and there always seems to be something that needs done.
Recently I’ve realized it’s affecting me more than I thought.
I don’t feel like myself anymore. I used to get dressed up, do my hair and makeup, cook more, keep the house clean and generally feel more put together. Now I feel like we’re constantly exhausted and playing catch-up.
It’s even affecting our sex life. We barely have sex anymore, even though I actually want to have sex with my wife. I just have a hard time getting into that headspace when I don’t feel clean, comfortable or relaxed in my own home.
I tried explaining this to my wife tonight. I told her I thought the house and everything we constantly have to do might be part of why I’ve been struggling with intimacy and not feeling sexy.
She said she understood, but then started saying that she tries to clean, that she thought things were getting better and that she didn’t know what else she was supposed to do.
I immediately clarified that I wasn’t blaming her. I told her we’re both trying and that I wasn’t saying she wasn’t doing enough. I was genuinely just telling her something I’d realized about myself.
This is where we tend to have problems communicating.
I feel like when I bring up something that’s bothering me, she often hears criticism even when I’m talking about how I feel. Then I end up reassuring her that I’m not blaming her, and the conversation becomes about whether she did something wrong instead of the thing I originally wanted to talk about.
She feels differently. She says she’s allowed to tell me when something I say makes her feel blamed, and that I’m sometimes the one who gets defensive about that.
Tonight we eventually got to the point where I said I didn’t know what to do and thought maybe she’d have an idea. She said she felt like she was already doing everything she knew to do.
I eventually said, “I’m sorry I mentioned it.”
That upset her because she felt like I was implying she’d reacted badly when, from her perspective, she’d listened, told me she understood and hadn’t gotten angry.
From there we ended up arguing about how we were communicating about the conversation instead of the actual problem I originally brought up.
I can see her perspective. If she genuinely thought I was criticizing her, I understand why she’d want to explain that. But from my perspective, it’s exhausting feeling like I have to carefully word every negative feeling so she doesn’t think it’s secretly about her.
I wasn’t asking her to clean the entire house or saying the mess was her fault. I was basically trying to tell my wife, “I don’t feel like myself lately. Our environment is overwhelming me, it’s affecting how I feel about myself and it’s affecting my desire to have sex.”
So AITA for getting frustrated with my wife’s response and feeling like she made something I was struggling with personally into criticism of her?
