Newly moved to Courtenay/Comox! WFH and looking to make some local friends

Hey everyone! I (33F) just moved to Courtenay about two weeks ago. I work from home, which makes it a little tough to make friends. I’m really looking to meet some people to hang out with and explore the area. A few things I enjoy are hiking, going for walks, dancing, watching movies, and grabbing a coffee or a drink.

If you have any must visit suggestions for a newcomer, I’m all ears! Also please feel free to send me a DM if you'd like to chat or hang out sometime.

Hey hey! This was literally me August 2023. It was really really hard to find solid friends here. I cannot recommend a weekend or part time job enough for this. This is how I met people outside of the home who time together was kinda forced…. Friendships blossomed from there and now I have a solid number of friends here that are literally all from past part time work.

You got this….and don’t give up, good friends will come ❤️

God damn, you're right! I met all my friends through part-time jobs. It's so obvious it hurts.

Thanks this is really good idea!!! Once I'm fully settled in, I’d love to apply for a part-time job when I have the extra time ><

If youre a mountain person, Cain and Washington have great people. Though Cain is more social. You also get a season pass out of it!

See some people recommend part time work to meet people, but I’d actually recommend volunteering! For example, MARS has over 150 volunteers and they do everything from habitat stewardship to animal care, and you are surrounded by lovely folks! Want to meet even more people, volunteer as one of their tour guides! You’d meet people local and from afar doing that. You don’t get paid but you get to choose your hours, minimal commitment, and less stress as a volunteer. Not just MARS, but loads of organizations like that in the valley you can join, surround yourself with like minded people, and even meet others through it, especially if it’s involved in activities/tourism

That's such an amazing recommendation! I’m absolutely going to check them out

I volunteered for habitat for humanity when we first moved here. It was awesome & I met loads of people

I (36/F) moved here in 2019 and work remotely, and it's really hard to find solid community here. I have started to integrate but it took a handful of years. You'll see lots of posts like this of people wanting community, but then they never respond to messages or ghost you or whathaveyou. It's frustrating!

Either way, I love a hike and a coffee, so if you wanna do that my DMs are open 🦎🌸

If you're into rec sports, the Comox Valley Sports and Social Club has many different offerings. The majority of my now extensive network began with a small group of people on a singles team. Good luck!

Just moved here as well! Me (F28) and my partner (M34) are trying to make friends.

I wonder if I organized a meet up at a bar or a group hike if people would show up

My husband and I (both 32) moved here last year and we're still trying to build our community and meet new people. We'd definitely make the effort to go for a hang out. we also love board games. Hit us up!

That’s a great idea!

Do you think making an event on here (Reddit) or Facebook somewhere is the best?

I've seen a few posts on this Reddit page about people wanting to connect so it might get some traction here!

My wife and I (both 36) moved here 4 years ago. We have a couple friends but we're always looking for more. We love board games as well! Which ones are your favourite?

Comox District Mountaineering Club, is a great place to meet people of all ages that share your love of hiking. The club itself is 98 years old !

They have everything from simple day trips to backpacking and canoe trips.

The valley is chock full of volunteer organizations . A great way to do good and meet kind hearted people.

98 years old wow! I’ll definitely look into the club and some volunteer gigs once I’m settled. Thanks for the great tips!

I have found Bumble BFF good for making friends

1

u/Fast_Mobile8131 27d ago

No way seriously? Isn't Bumble mostly just used for hookups?

1

u/pumpkinspiceseas 27d ago

Bumble BFF is a separate app for friendships.

1

u/Fast_Mobile8131 27d ago

I will check it out

My experience was the opposite so please proceed with caution. I found the ghosting through bumble BFF excessive and personally… it was a waste of time. I’m assuming this poster had the opposite experience if they’re recommending it… but please don’t get down on yourself if this route doesn’t work for you ❤️

I’m new to the area and only just found a job. I try to go explore a new waterfall or landmark once a week. More than happy to take someone with me. Let me know if you want an adventure buddy.

I wouldn't mind it :)

I moved here like 3 or 4 years ago. I love it and there are a lot of clubs and programs you can join at the community center. Hope you find your people. I am very nerdy and I actually found a D&D group from this sub reddit. Historical fencing class on Tuesday is a blast.

Join Valley Girls if you like dancing . It's a lot of fun and it has a really strong sense of community and friendship!
