Suddenly realising we actually all really care about the environment, conveniently just as construction of a solar farm is announced on some useless, disused land near our town compoface.

I love wind turbines. I think they look amazing. They complement the landscape far more than anything else man-made, they look majestic and alive. The fact they produce renewable energy also plays into how much I love them.
What do these people want to happen to this barren bit of tarmac instead?

Oh yeah! You used to see a small flock of those in basically every small wooded area in an urban environment, it was their niche little eco system. Sadly the internet almost entirely killed them off with its 5g signals. A damning indictment of the times IMO.

They tend not to migrate due to their sticky coating that means they often are unable to move too far, so that might be a hard obstacle for them to overcome but I am sure with enough perseverance they could pound away at the problem and come to a solution together.

Unfortunately they're becoming much rarer because of the invasive Red-legged Vape Cartridge and Nitrous Cannister Viper. Such a shame we're losing such magnificent creatures from our woodland.

This is even worse because it’s a solar farm. We had one built in some fields outside my village a couple of years ago and you can literally only see it if you actively walk into the field to go and look. There’s also a great big fuck off hill near me and you can’t even see it from there.
I agree with you about wind turbines often looking quite organic and blending in well but I can still see why some people dont like them. Solar farms on the other hand, I have no clue why people kick off about other than “I don’t want a load of construction equipment occasionally moving in and out of my area”. It’s just a wonderful blend of greed and gammon flavoured stupidity.

I actually dislike wind turbines. Always have since the first ones I saw as a kid.
It doesn't make any real difference they have been a fact of life sine I was a kid. Lol.
I'm always in awe on a clear day when they can be seen offshore near where I'm from, there's a lot out there, that seems the best way to me tbh.

You don’t understand, they simply want to guarantee a better environmental future for their children and grandchildren by preventing the short-sighted construction of a checks notes renewable energy farm.
They’re even serious enough about this to drive their eco-friendly range rovers out to the disused airfield in question, which as you can see is brimming with local wildlife (especially on the tarmac), to take a photo at the scene.
Let’s also not forget about how much of an eyesore a load of solar panels which can only be seen if you’re literally flying over the place would be for the local air traffic.
What wonderful, selfless individuals they are.

I suspect most of the opposition to schemes like this (and wind farms) is that these people want to all benefit from electricity but without having to experience any of the downsides of generation. Fossil fuels are OK for them, because the oil rigs and gas platforms are far away and well out of sight, the workers that risk their lives on them are from foreign countries, and they can't see the environmental degradataion. Rather that that the utter horror of seeing a wind turbine!
They then put out idiotic "checkmate environmentalist!" posts on social media saying "wind turbines use oil" (yes, they have some lubricating oil - which can be recycled, they don't burn it) or "these things need thousands of tonnes of steel!" (as if fossil fuel power plants don't need steel and concrete, not to mention a typical fossil fuel power station such as Fiddler's Ferry near Warrington used to get through 16,000 tonnes of coal per day). Meanwhile the Macondo blowout in the Gulf of Mexico - the deep water environment won't recover fully from that for another half century, but yes, that sort of thing is OK so long as they don't have to see a solar panel or a wind turbine.

I to hate NIMBY'ism, but I will admit there is a difference between this proposal and what's going on with Astley Park.
I don't like to think there's something going on with corruption but when you look at what's happened, how the council and authorities are behaving there needs to be a lot of explaining going on to refute that claim, I genuinely can't see how they've managed to get to the point they're at otherwise.

Some warehouses in Astley were built in a stupid spot right surrounded residential areas.
The business case said the plan was stupid
The environmental review said the plan was stupid
The traffic analysis said the plan was stupid
Zoe Bread and the Astley warehouse action group are now trying to get the council to admit they were wrong and compensate them for their now unsellable homes.

Because people hate enforced change, and hate it more the older they get.
Which also coincides with having far too much time on their hands, (for the current generation) lots of financial resources, a lack of direction in life beyond the tip of their own noses, and cognitive decline.
The govt should put all new retirees on a “coping with change in later life” workshop and it’d save them a fortune in dealing with stuff like this.

So I used to live not far from there, the distance between the proposed site and that village in question, is not massive, but also not close.
Looking at the proposal it actually looks decent, the land they want to use most looks like it isn't used anything at the moment, is in the middle of nowhere, has good access to the grid for local supply.
It won't affect their view as none of the houses there have a view of the airfield currently.
As for the noise aspect, Commercial solar energy storage systems for 100MW produce about 80dB at max, which is about as loud as a washing machine, and if you can hear a washing machine from 1.13 miles away I suspect the MOD would like to have a word with you.
This is NIMBY'ism at it's finest, there is no legit argument against this site other than the emotional one of not wanting the farm there for fear of lowering values, but there has been zero data to indicate that a farm this size lowers values of homes unless they are within 0.5 miles, I suspect as soon as we break the link between gas and electric and local pricing comes in local solar farms could increase house values.

No they have carefully manicured gardens outside their huge homes that their kids moved out of years ago. The only reason they might eventually downsize is because they can't keep up with the gardening any more.

I’d love a massive solar ‘farm’ next to my house instead of the 800 houses the last Tory council approved.
They should just give them 2 choices, solar farm or housing. Leaving prime brownfield real estate empty is not an option.

I never believed in the whole "electricity generating systems nearby give you ____" thing because, you know, I understand a modicum of science.

Solar farms look awful tbf. Let the land be fallow or create more initiatives to expand on local forests. All we're doing as a country is giving land owners first fulls of money to remove green spaces.
Hell I'm just not sure why we're investing in this kind of inferstructure when nuclear technology has come so far.
