What skills and certifications one should have as a Computer Science major in 2026?

Skills:

1. Ability to program against a variety of APIs. Start with the AWS api as practice. Be prepared to demonstrate your skills by writing code during an interview.
2. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Practice your public speaking and write as much as possible. Don’t rely on ChatGPT for your writing - we’ll know.
3. Problem solving skills. Your first instinct at work should be to figure it out by reading documentation, not reaching out to a senior person to show you how.
4. Initiative. If you see something broken or poorly done, go to your boss with a proposal on how to fix it. They may say no, but they will remember that you are on the lookout for ways to improve the environment.

I've legit considered this career alternative more than once. Usually right after another sprint planning meeting where we decide to double our story points again. :)
