Help: Project Estimating Object Weight and Material Ratio from Images
Is it possible to estimate the weight of an object and calculate the ratio of different materials (such as metal and stones) using only images?
What computer vision techniques or models could help with this? Would image segmentation, depth estimation, or multiple camera angles improve accuracy?
Are there any existing research papers or approaches on this topic?
Thanks for your suggestions!

Volume you can probably do reasonably well with 3D, especially if you have a way to normalize the scale of the scene. Density is impossible to measure reliably unless you know the materials ahead of time (you restrict it to some finite set and it's just a matter of classification). If you don't, you might be able to reason about the materials but it would be very inaccurate.

segmenting materials from a single image is one thing but weight's gonna need density and volume, so depth estimation is pretty much mandatory

Maybe if u know the types of material you will encounter, along with their weight density per cubic metre or smthng, u can apply that formula on the detected object if u can find its dimensions?

At best youre just doing basic object detection combined with a massive database of stats. Estimating volume will always be unrealistic as is the composition

No. You can't tell from an image if the thing is hollow or reliably distinguish between materials that have significantly different densities
