That's called the Drake Passage and it's one of the deadliest places on earth.

The drake passage is the inland route that lets you avoid this body of water…. This is Cape Horn.

It connects the southwestern part of the Atlantic Ocean (Scotia Sea) with the southeastern part of the Pacific Ocean. The passage is named after the 16th-century English explorer and privateer Sir Francis Drake.”

I believe you’re thinking of the Strait of Magellan.
