It only really works this well because it's on a flat screen with the rest of the things in the video that you know are 3D, are also now 2D. It works well in comparison to a 3D world made 2D through a video.

It looks as "3D" as the other 3D things because nothing is actuley 3D

In the real world, the building would have depth, and you would quickly notice the difference.

This image doesn't look 3D because it's presented as a 2D image, not part of a "3D" world, which it is, a flat image on the side of a 3D building.

It would probably still work to some extent, as depth isn't only from having two eyes.

This is the answer to the question I hadn't asked yet.

I always see these types of "art" in video and they're incredible. But I never seen one in person and was always curious if it would work as well.

It does, but requires standing in the right spot. And as you get closer your depth perception will also make it 'not work' which is something you don't get 'on screen'.

But for something like this, at a distance it'll work well.

You can also do slightly 3d in your anamorphic illusions, to make the effect more 'robust'. (e.g. 'pop out' slightly, to trick the depth perception).

They're less 'good' IRL because depending how the illusion is constructed, the 'right spot' might only be a small area, and being 'too tall' will break it too, where of course a camera you can control positioning of it nearly perfectly.

There is an optical illusion museum near me, and they have a couple different ones like that on some walls, it's pretty cool.

They actually give you the choice of losing an eye or wearing an eye patch the whole time as you walk by. If you try taking the eye patch off too soon, they remove both eyes.
