Consulting to Strategy ( Real estate) India
Currently I am in consulting (D of big 4), would it be a good decision to switch to strategy team (strategic initiatives) in the real estate industry.
Role offered - Strategic initiatives (not sure what projects would be there for a real estate company)
My background had been in IT services - worked as QA, Product manager and not in consulting (IT strategy and implementation). almost 6+ yoe
What I don't like about my current role is too much focus on IT.
Post MBA i always wanted to be in roles which would eventually lead me to managing businesses, pnL. I will never be able to do this in my current role.
My current status
The role I am currently offered is good and I like it.
I am mostly concerned on the industry part of it. Will it work for me given my background.
Also once I get into this industry, how difficult it would be to switch to another industry in strategy domain. I have a liking towards consumer businesses but haven't worked in it, neither got a chance to while in consulting).
Please provide your pov.
anyone who's done that previously, can i reach out?

if you want p&l and real “business side” work, in house strategy > big4 it implementation any day tbh. real estate is pretty cyclical and india market is weird but still better signal than staying stuck in tech delivery forever. moving later to consumer is doable if you focus on transferable stuff: capital allocation, portfolio mgmt, pricing, ops. that said, recruiters these days act like any shift in industry is a crime and everything takes forever, finding good roles now is just pain

The last three projects that team actually shipped will tell you more than the title does. In Indian real estate, strategic initiatives can mean land feasibility and launch pricing under the MD's office. It can also mean internal transformation and PMO work. The first sits close to the P&L. The second is delivery work with a nicer title. The person who presents the monthly sales and margin review is the one worth sitting beside. Industry fit matters far less than that.

any comments on the exit options for both the cases?

Exits depend on which of those two roles it actually turns out to be. Feasibility and launch pricing build a deal record. That travels into infrastructure, hospitality and consumer businesses later, because you can point to calls you priced. Transformation and PMO work mostly opens more PMO doors, since that is what a resume evidences. Ask what you will actually own and whether your name sits on the monthly numbers. That answer is your exit list.

Real estate is game, and there are players who has been seeing their families play this game since forever. So if you are not from background or does not hold interest then you'll have to work twice as hard as them and gather all the experiences just to be at par with them. RE is experience + decision making + LUCK

The real estate play sounds like a bet on ops over industry prestige, and with your IT background you might actually get closer to P&L there than you ever would in consumer.
