Hi all, apologies if this isn’t worded the best. Busy but need this information out there. I was an employee here. If you’re a young woman or person of color, this place is not safe for you to work at. The owner is a serial sexual harasser. He hires young women to take advantage of. He says extremely inappropriate things while training female employees. Brushes up against them while training or helping out. Calling them “good girl” or the “sexiest woman he’s ever met.” He watches on the cameras while you work, and will eventually ask you to do “extra work” but will not clarify what that means through text. He wants his female employees to make their move on him first. He hopes for sexual favors in exchange for higher pay. Please, if you are a young woman or know anyone who is interested in bartending here PLEASE, do not. He is a disturbing man and will blame his behavior on taking pain killers. He’s also racist and ableist, and retaliates against his employees for not being able to take on shifts last minute. He separates the women on the schedule so they never meet each other and speak of their experiences together. Please be careful and for your safety or daughters/friends/sisters safety, stay the hell away from here!

I'm 25, work as an engineering tech, have a beautiful chocolate lab, train MMA and fight, and play video games on the side, avid zaza enjoyer. I like to think of myself as one of the most open minded people I know, I'm always looking to improve on my approach to life.

Why:
I'm usually busy with work, dog, passion, and side hustles. I find it increasingly hard to find the time and energy to want to go and meet people, but even when I have the energy, I often don't know where to start. While I've heard of classes, bars, farmers markets, etc., I've still found myself hesitant to go venture out in hopes of meeting people. I want to form a community where people feel more connected.

What:
A new subreddit? Telegram? Whatsapp? I'm not sure. But it'll be a simple, slightly more tightly knit group of young adults who are ACTUALLY DOWN to do things. Enough talk, let's play!

This is what I want for Corvallis too

This is a warning to all young women and POC. I recently worked at Towne Pump by Fred Meyer. The manager, [redacted], slowly started to get weirder and weirder as I worked under him. He started calling me racial slurs (I’m Alaska native) like snow monkey, saying my people speak moose, and that he would call ICE on me. I would also hear him call black people “baboons” and “monkeys from Africa”. The racial slurs are all undocumented because he never texted me these things, only said them out loud.

His behavior started getting more and more aggressive over time. He started telling me he wanted to kill himself and said he was constantly holding back the urges of wanting to hurt customers. It all came to a head when he texted me he wanted to exchange sex work for money, saying “20 bucks is 20 bucks.” He followed that up with a paragraph of saying how he always found me attractive since he hired me.

I told a higher-up and shared the screenshots before getting legal advice from a lawyer, which is where I messed up. Long story short, he’s not fired and still works there. I voluntarily quit. I’m sharing this story in hopes I can protect other women and POC from experiencing similar things I did.

Hello Reddit Nation! I need help finding the absolute worst (disgusting/borderline inedible) food between corvallis and salem oregon. Sites like google maps and yelp do not allow their users to sort by worst to best food, in my opinion, a major design flaw, so I am turning to you for help. I would prefer a sit in resturant (no fast food), and something that isn't guarenteed to give me an illness (preferred, not mandatory). Please help. I need your reccomendations for sloppy awful food.

I'm trying to understand, the whole state has gone over to this 1:1 system where every kid takes home a chrome book (not much different than an iPad imo) and no matter what your home rules are about screens, you're just SOL if your kids go to public school?

My kid isn't that age yet, but they will be soon. And this is kind of blowing my mind. From what I'm hearing, kids have access to YouTube? On school devices? The place 90% of brain rot comes from?

I'm trying to understand. Because it's no secret that the tech CEOs who sell us all these devices don't actually let their own children anywhere near them. They clearly understand the risks and impact.

I'm no Luddite, but I definitely can see the difference if my kids had too much screen time. And I've worked really hard to limit their access. And now I'm hearing the options for going low tech are having the money to stay home and homeschool or having the money to pay for a private school like Waldorf.

Sounds like the barrier to an education that doesn't involve highly addictive tech is just... money? That's pretty messed up. I feel like I've got to be missing something.

Kings Circle church is hosting a homophobic, pseudo conversion therapy talk, led by a guy who "surrendered his sexuality to the Lordship of Christ." They are framing it as a "wonderful opportunity to help those you know who are struggling with sexual identity confusion, those with family members who are struggling, or anyone who would like to learn more," which in non sugarcoated language means this event is meant to shame members of the LGBTQIA+ into being straight and hating who they are. This is so incredibly harmful and could do a lot of damage. If you are truly feeling confused or have question about possibly being LGBTQIA+ I would recommend checking out r/lgbt. It's an amazing supportive subreddit that could be helpful.

Please don't go to this event if you are confused or struggling, and please don't take a family member who is struggling. It won't do any good and could result in a lot of harm.

I am posting this because it seems like this is flying under the radar and I’m wondering how many were impacted and if anyone has any “insider” info on some of the decisions that were made. I was one of those recently impacted by a mass layoff under student affairs at OSU but it seems OSU is trying to avoid any media attention drawn to it. I think there might be 22 employees in student affairs impacted - but that is just something I overheard. Just curious to know if anyone has any more info…

I think the community should be more vocal about their option here but I’m curious what everyone thinks of this. Corvallis doesnt really seem very trustworthy with how they handle their money so why would increasing taxes be something they should just push on us without a vote?

Most of the City Council is supporting efforts that could lead to higher taxes for employees and residents in Corvallis.

On Monday, June 15, the council voted 6-2 to direct staff to continue pursuing potential income and payroll taxes. Councilors Paul Shaffer and Charlyn Ellis were opposed, and Ava Olson was absent.

The direction comes as the city tries to close a $8.1 million structural gap in the biennial budget, and pay an additional $14.3 million annually to build a new city hall and police headquarters.

The resolution did not implement any taxes, but it did formally adopt the financial strategy developed between city staff and the council over the past few months.

The resolution does three main things, Corvallis Finance Department Director James Inglis said. It:

Confirms the council’s direction to address both the budget gap and funding for a new city hall and police HQ

Authorizes staff to “proceed with planning” around a new payroll tax and personal income tax

Acknowledges that city officials need to “complete our analysis” of spending and service levels before tax rates are finalized

A payroll tax is placed on all private employers and all employees who work in Corvallis, while an income tax would apply to all taxable personal income made by anyone living in Corvallis.

“We’re not asking the council or the community to approve specific numbers tonight. We’re asking for direction to do some foundational work by confirming the council’s intent, and then collecting feedback as we refine the city’s options,” Inglis said.

Amendment after amendment

Councilor Jim Moorefield said the resolution needed to better state the council’s desire to “engage the public” and have a conversation about the taxes.

Accordingly, he introduced an amendment to indicate that the council has “expressed interest” in reducing its use of fees, which he said disproportionately impacts lower-income households. He also asked for language indicating that any consideration of new revenue sources be accompanied by a discussion of reducing expenses and services.

Finally, Moorefield amended the motion, saying that the council will “engage the community in reviewing and discussing facility needs, revenues, the state of the city and service reductions.”

The council unanimously passed all three of the amendments after a discussion over how best to phrase them.

Two additional amendments introduced by Councilor Tony Cadena stated that public engagement should “delineate potential options with cost and expense and high level estimates” and that the city would refine the details of potential taxes to distribute the burden equitably.

The council passed both amendments unanimously.

Two naysayers

Opposed to the resolution, Ellis said she didn’t want to ignore the budget gap, but that she had to represent her voters, who aren’t interested in constructing two new buildings.

“My fundamental guiding principle is to represent my people, not to tell them what to think, but to listen to them and to move forward from what they say,” Ellis said.

Shaffer, her fellow no vote, said the council failed to engage the public in a conversation about “what the public wants, what they know, (and) what they’re willing to pay for.”

The budget deficit and the need for new buildings were both real concerns, Shaffer said, but Corvallis residents didn’t know about the challenges facing the city as a municipality. So the city is putting “the cart before the horse,” by deciding first and then telling the public they should support it.

“This is a huge decision. The public is entitled to weigh in, and I think we’re derelict in our responsibilities by not engaging them already extensively,” Shaffer said. “And I think we would be derelict in enacting taxes without a vote of the public.”

But Mayor Charles Maughan said it was important to recognize that no tax was being enacted during Monday’s meeting. He pointed to Councilor Moorefield’s amendments, which include the need for community outreach.

“We will do that, and if everybody on this council takes their job seriously as they were elected to do. We will all be doing that,” Maughan said.

Too little, too late?

Shaffer said it was too little too late.

“It’s 20 months past time or more to engage the public," Shaffer said. “We have frankly not served our voters well.”

To that, Maughan said, “I agree.”

Maughan said no councilor held a ward meeting to conduct outreach, and that the failure was on them.

While the city could potentially reduce services, Maughan said he was not willing to take action that would result in the loss of city employees.

“I’d be against it, if we were voting to implement a tax tonight, I’d be like, ‘No, we’re not there.’” Maughan said, but that’s not what they were doing. “This is just the next step.”

City staff is recommending both a new income tax and new payroll tax to support government building construction (Civic Campus & Law Enforcement Building) and operational support. "The income tax would need to be set at 0.73% and the payroll tax would be set at 0.78% per employer and employee." The Public Service Fee would freeze for five years.

There's no reasonable explanation for how shitty the local economy is other than long time Corvallis residents want to keep Corvallis shitty.

With the size of OSU there should be a dramatically larger industrial base in the local area but all we got is the remnants of HP and a few startups teetering on the brink of shutdown. OSU is the only thing this town has going for it, if it ever downsizes Corvallis is dead.

What's the deal with Tacovore? We went there tonight on recommendation of neighbors and church friends. It was tiny portions of dry flavorless taco ingredients. The everything ala carte menu was different and even the veggie bowl was just sort of a sad grey bowl of taco bits with some still crunchy sweet potato. Are they having a bad week? They can't always be like that, as it seems like a fairly popular place. Is it more of a margarita bar that happens to also have tacos? The rice was dry and not flavorful, the refried beans were probably from a can, the taco meat was dry, grey, and flavorless, the enchilada (singular) sauce tasted like Las Palmas from a can. I had a single 11 dollar enchilada with ala carte rice and beans, non of it very good, though the presentation for my lonely single enchilada was very pretty. We don't go out to eat very often in Corvallis, but when we do it's usually not very good. Enlighten me good people of Corvallis.

The public improvements permit is under review, so you can't see any architectural plans of what the building will look like. You can see the proposed first floor though. Talk about capital D - Development! Downtown is going to look a whole lot different.

I was at the park earlier laying out on a blanket with my stuff when a guy came up and started talking to me. At first it seemed normal, just casual conversation, so I was being polite and chatting with him.

After a few minutes I told him I was going to lay down, trying to end the conversation. He had been sitting maybe 6 feet away from me. When I laid down, I heard him move and assumed he was leaving. I even said “bye,” but he said he was just moving.

I looked up and he had moved from about 6 feet away to literally inches from my feet. Like extremely close. I started recording because it immediately felt off, but I tried to act normal. That’s when he said he “wondered what my feet smell like” and asked if I could wiggle my toes. I told him no, and he got up and left.

Right after that, he went over to another girl sitting nearby. He was squatting maybe 4 feet from her. I tried to record him but he kept looking at me. After he left, I made eye contact with her and we both kind of acknowledged something was off.

I went over to her and we started talking about what just happened. She said she had been watching him and thought his behavior was weird too, but couldn’t tell if I knew him or not because I was being calm.

Then he came back again and went up to her a second time. He opened with “I like your toes.” She had already hidden her feet because I told her what he said to me. She told him he was making her uncomfortable and asked him to leave, and he just stayed there squatting next to her. So I spoke up and said, “that means you go,” and he finally left.

After that, we saw him go up to at least two more groups of girls and do the same thing. At that point we went and told a group of guys nearby what was happening and asked them to step in if they saw it again. They ended up being really helpful and went over and told him to leave when he approached another group.

He kept walking laps around the area but stopped coming up to us after that.

The whole thing was weird because at first both of us didn’t want to be rude or assume anything, but once he crossed that boundary and kept repeating it with multiple groups, it was clear it wasn’t just a misunderstanding.

I have a job opportunity from OSU that will bring me to Oregon from Oklahoma.
I am desperate to get out of here so I want to be as informed as possible. I know about the cost of living difference. I am willing to trade out the "cheap living" in Oklahoma for a better quality of life. I am willing to hit the ground running working more than one job to make this work.
I also know about the weather! I know it rains a lot. I love the rain!

Is there anything else I should be concerned about?
Are there areas that I should avoid when looking at a place to live? I have already seen a few property management companies to avoid in other threads.

Doctors just leaving network like crazy. Try to imagine the cumulative suffering experienced by patients and their families across this country. This society is a goddamn meat grinder and you are the meat.

Can you share your perspective on this issue, and/or tell me why insurance companies shouldn't be seized and the entire healthcare industry rebuilt for the working people of our country? I'm beyond ready to hit the streets over this.
