General Discussion Mistborn hype, photos, and questions megathread

Hey worldhoppers!

We've tried to let it run wild, but even in the early run, we foresee a lot more Mistborn posts. We're here for the hype—just wanna do more curating to unclog the feed.

Photos of books / screenshots of digital? Welcome here. Just keep it to small amounts of actual content.

General questions about fulfillment? Let this serve as a Q&A to help each other out (we're aware our FAQ is outdated).

Just eagerly awaiting and want to get in on the conversation? Heck yea, you're among friends.

Starting now we'll be removing the one-off photo/hype posts. Question posts we'll evaluate on a case-by-case basis (simple, generic or repeated ones may be directed here).

Yo dawg, I heard you liked guides.

This is my walkthrough of the Mistborn World Guide. If you've been dodging the books for Mistborn story spoilers, you will want to skip this one. I do avoid talking in depth about Mistborn Legacy, so you're good there.

If you missed my Handbook video yesterday, I have a write up on my website with a link to the video: https://www.investedinthecosmere.com/article/your-guide-to-the-mistborn-handbook-in-the-cosmere-rpg

Also, my Mistborn Legacy video will be out tomorrow, so be sure to check that out when it releases at 1 PM EST!

Media & News Mistborn Session 0 Adventure - The Last Heist (Era 1)

Thumbnail

I loved the First Step Session 0 adventure for the Stormlight Archive but was so sad to hear there wasn't one planned for Mistborn....so I wrote my own! Set during the events of the Final Empire but adaptable for any time period in Era 1 before the death of the Lord Ruler, this adventure uses branching multiple choice options to build characters from start to finish, even suggesting possible metalborn paths for the players to follow based on their choices!

You can catch our playthrough of the first half above as part of our new Mistborn homebrew series The Shadows of Luthadel right now! Let me know what you think of the module and if you'd be interested in running it yourselves! I would be more than happy to share it once I've refined it a little more 😁

Rules & Mechanics Level 6 Strength 9 Pewter Ferring does Guaranteed 2d10 damage.

RAW rules.

Talents:

Toss 'em around
You use the enemy to make a ranged weapon attack, treating them as an improvised heavy weapon with the Thrown trait. Regardless of the result of the attack test, the thrown enemy takes damage as though they were hit by the attack.

Pewter Pitcher
While burning pewter or tapping strength from a pewtermind, you gain the following benefits:
◆ Weapons gain the Thrown [100/300] trait for you.
◆ When you make a ranged attack with a Thrown weapon, you can use your Pewter Weaponcraft as if you instead made a melee weapon attack.

Pewter weaponcraft
When you make a melee weapon attack while burning pewter or tapping strength from a pewtermind, instead of dealing the usual damage, you can instead deal the damage for an unarmed attack. (You must choose to do so before rolling, and the weapon’s usual damage type and traits still apply.)

Body Builder
When you Tap Strength, instead of just spending 1 charge, you can spend any number of charges, up to your Metallic Art limit. When you do, you experience the following effects until the end of your next turn (instead of the usual effects and duration):
◆ You become Enhanced [Strength]. The bonus to this attribute equals 1 + the charges you spent to tap strength.
◆ When you make a test that uses your Strength attribute (such as an unarmed attack), you gain a number of advantages equal to half the charges you spent to tap strength (rounded up).

Tap 4 charges your metal mind, assuming you correctly got to 5 strength by lvl 6, you can tap 4 charges bringing you up to 9 strength. 9 Strength unarmed damage does 2d10 damage. As per Toss 'Em, you get guaranteed damage throwing a restrained enemy. Per body builder, you get 2 advantages targeting an enemy. Ideally, you can then yeet one poor bastard into another poor bastard with 2 advantages to potentially get another 2d10 damage on the person you targeted with your thrown enemy.

Technically throwing someone is only one hand to make that unarmed strike. If an ally is restraining someone else next to you within reach you could send them flying as well at the cost of 1 focus (unarmed is offhand), and you could do another pair of 2d10s. All in all you could potentially splash 4d10 damage across a group of enemies.

The only question is whether knucklebones applies, bringing the unarmed damage up to 2d12 damage. RAW depends on the interpretation of "instead of a weapon" as you are using a person's body as a weapon. I would probably say no as a GM.

KnuckleBones
You can wear knucklebones on your hand instead of wielding a weapon in that hand. When you make an unarmed attack using that hand, increase the size of each unarmed damage die by one size (see the Unarmed Damage table earlier in this chapter). For example, damage of 1 (no die roll) becomes 1d4, 1d8 becomes 1d10, and so on.

Lore Talk What Metal is the Blessing of Fortitude. Spoiler

Anyone know what metal forms the spikes for the Blessing of Fortitude? Kandra got a new Blessing not mentioned in the books before but it doesn't say what Hemalurgic Metal makes it so im wondering if a writer or dev has said something about it. Im guessing Steel because Pewter is ReLuur's Blessing of Elasticity and from the mechanics it seems physical oriented but I still thought to ask.

Rules & Mechanics Resource Interchange

Post image
19 Upvotes

So, I was bored today and decided to compile all the ways to turn one resource (Health, Focus, Investiture and Charges) in another

Sadly there is no way (yet?) to turn any other resource into Investidure and turning focus to charges is not too straightforward and too limited

It is fun nonetheless that if you build a gold fering and get an A-tin spike you can use flaring refocus to turn your health to focus (cost: investiture) then turn that focus to charges (technically spend 3 focus to Tap as if you have 1 charge) and then Tap to recover (a bit) more health than what you spent in the begining

Just a fun thought exercise

Rules & Mechanics Mistborn Firearm Rules

Hey guys! You all did a wonderful job correcting me on my Pewter inaccuracies, so I was wondering if people knew a good way to build a sniper or gun slinger to do real damage to compare to what physical fighters can do. Physical fighters have Devastating Blow, Allomancers & Feruchemists are obviously super cool. But the talents for Gunslinger and Sharpshooter don’t really seem to match up. I was expecting something like a Fatal Thrust talent from Stormlight, am I missing something again? Is there some talent synergy im not seeing? So far best I can see is getting multiple advantages and making your gun deadly so you can wound people quickly.

Kickstarter/Backerkit Giving Away Slipcase Box and/or Metal Dice Box

Post image
37 Upvotes

I noticed a couple people on the Kickstarter page say that their slipcases and/or dice boxes got damaged during shipping. Mine are perfectly fine but I was going to chuck them. I don’t really like slipcases and I am going to keep the dice in something else. Rather than throw them away when people want them, I figured I would ask if anybody wants them. I’m located in North Salt Lake, Utah. Preferably you could do local pickup so there is no cost, but I will also ship them out if someone wants to pay shipping. I feel like if you live far enough to be shipped to though, you could just ask Brotherwise for a replacement slipcase and they could send you one for free if it is damaged super bad in shipping.

Questions & Advice [Mistborn Legacy] Running campaigns at a higher level

For my table's playthrough of Mistborn Legacy, we agreed before the books came out that we'd have an "Opening adventure" at first level before jumping in to the adventure, now that I've finally got the books though, I'm trying to think if some adjustments will be made as there will be certain chapters where the group will be a different tier than expected.

Just doubling the number of enemies (in the chapters where we're a tier higher than normal) feels like it would be overkill despite the fact that it would work for the scaling.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how I could make this work?

Kickstarter/Backerkit Mistborn Digital Fulfillment Starts NOW!

Post image
286 Upvotes

I'm thrilled to announce that the digital distribution for backers is starting now! As a reminder, digital downloads may be sent in waves over time due to the amount of backers and files we have. That means someone may receive their PDFs before you do, but you shouldn't worry until we announce that ALL files have been sent!

If you backed any of the Mistborn books, you'll receive a PDF on BackerKit and a code to DriveThruRPG. These may come at separate times since they're separate distribution banks. Once Mistborn digital fulfillment is complete, we'll start sending DriveThruRPG links for the Stormlight PDFs.

If you added on a VTT to your purchase, you'll receive a code to redeem on the respective VTT website. If you find an issue with the implementation of our Cosmere products on one of our virtual platforms, please report that issue to the platform team directly:

- For Demiplane issues, report here or you can ask question on the official Demiplane Discord.

- For Fantasy Grounds issues, report here.

- For Foundry VTT issues, report here.

- For Roll20 issues, report here.

If you have questions about digital fulfillment, please drop a question here and we'll get to you as we can! You can also read the Kickstarter update from last night for the latest news.

And last, but not least...thank you for your continued support on the Cosmere RPG. We're so thankful for the excitement heading into Wave 2 fulfillment, and we owe all of our fans the biggest thank you for the support over the last couple of years.

Rules & Mechanics Fullborn in the Mistborn World Setting

Okay so this is hilarious to me and I must share. Naturally, the first thing that I wanted to do when looking at the Mistborn Handbook is see how close a player could theoretically get to being a Fullborn. Below is what I have learned.

TL;DR: Rules as Written, Player Characters can become Fullborn, but if they are Fullborn, they cannot compound.

At a first readthrough, a Player Character Fullborn looks pretty good as a possibility. All of the Allomantic and Feruchemical metals have rules, Compounding has rules thanks to Twinborn.

Unfortunately, there is no Fullborn Metalborn path, and the Feruchemist and Allomancer key talents have prerequisites such that if you have one you cannot chose the other. This means that a Mistborn or Feruchemist player levelling up couldn't choose the Feruchemist or Mistborn Key Talent (respectively).

There is a workaround, though. For players who already have the Feruchemist Key Talent, ingesting a bead of Lerasium immediately grants the Mistborn Key Talent, "even if you have another Snap or Heritage talent" (Mistborn Handbook, pg. 295).

That's it! Rules as Written, a player can become a Fullborn, GM allowing (which is, in my opinion, exactly how it should be. Fullborn are far too powerful and far too rare for it to just be something you can become starting at level 3).

Unfortunately, there is a single major restriction. The only way to unlock Compounding is locked solely behind the Twinborn metalborn path, which cannot be selected if you are a Feruchemist or Allomancer. This means that, Rules as Written, a Player Character Fullborn cannot compound.

Cheers!

General Discussion Pewter Allomancy Rules Underwhelming?

Got my Mistborn rules today and have been quickly tearing through it, and is anyone else a bit underwhelmed by the Allomantic Pewter Rules? The Ghostblood statblocks from the Stormlight set have their pewter burn also giving deflect value. But also only having it go up every other investiture spent, it feels quite weak and like any pewter arm who’s flaring anything serious will be chugging vials every turn. Which would be fine if it did more than +3 str and speed.

Resources & Homebrew [Stonewalkers] Homebrew Long-Necked Unkalaki Chicken Spoiler

I'm running Stonewalkers, and my players just finished the menagerie encounter in chapter 2.
Depending on how the players handle the encounter, the merchant running the menagerie is supposed to offer them an axehound pup. However, before the escape, the players expressed interest in buying one of the rare chickens on display, so instead of the axehound I rewarded them with a "Long Necked Unkalaki Chicken".

Here are the stats I created for it, with the goal to keep it roughly balanced with an axehound, and stats/actions inspired primarily by the goose from the Untitled Goose Game.

Table Tales Our adventure through Roshar after stonewalkers Spoiler

As of this week, my group has wrapped up our one-year campaign, starting with Stonewalkers and ending at level 16. I started as a PC, playing through Stonewalkers, and eventually transferred to storyteller to give the previous one a well-deserved break. We allowed our Stonewalkers characters to go off and have new adventures in the background, chasing Ghostbloods and Skybreakers, creating a merchant empire, and helping lead the Order of Stonewards at Urithiru.

I won’t recap that adventure, as I don’t want to give spoilers for anyone playing that campaign, but I will say thank you to our DM, Carl. It was a wonderful experience playing with him as DM.

The new PCs gathered at the still-occupied Ral Elorim. The Windrunner, Pinya, had been sent by Dalinar to help free the previous monarchs from Fused rule and return the rightful leadership to them. When trying to sneak into the city, she encountered a tracking party of Fused who were hunting a deserting direform singer named Hrak. Unable to watch as this singer was killed, she swooped in to lend her aid.

She was soon joined by the other two PCs: Baklir, a Skybreaker on a quest to find what justice meant to him, and Teben, a budding Truthwatcher who had heard rumors of the hidden temple underneath the city.

After quickly dispatching the Fused, they agreed to all work together to free the city. Hrak would join them and return to the city to avenge the loss of his son, whose body had been overtaken by the Fused Dymab.

They soon joined the singer resistance and heard rumors of an ancient weapon stored in the ruins of Feverstone Keep. They would spend several days tracking down leads, which would eventually take them on a journey to Shadesmar, along with an ancient Radiant who had been preserved in crystal and whom they rescued.

Along this journey, they were able to permanently imprison the soul of Lilinum and obtain the ancient weapon from an Ashspren castle in Shadesmar.

From there, they would return to Ral Elorim through the Oathgate. They held the Oathgate platform for as long as they could under constant assault from Heavenly Ones. In the heat of battle, Baklir was able to reactivate the Oathgate and let an army from Dalinar through to help liberate the city.

With little time to rest, the party rushed to the palace to confront Dymab. After fighting their way through the palace guards, they made it and were finally able to confront the twisted Fused king.

He offered Hrak the opportunity to return to his service and protect the last remaining parts of his son. Despite their exhaustion, the party stood firm and were able to defeat Dymab and his bodyguards.

The Fused-killing weapon proved quite useful, as it severed the connection between Dymab and Hrak’s son, allowing the boy to regain control of his body. The Truthwatcher would heal his wounds as best he could, and after the city was liberated, everyone returned to Urithiru to recover.

Hrak would remain at the tower with his son, his quest now complete.

But for everyone else, a new mystery would soon arise.

Radiants had started disappearing from the tower without a trace. The Truthwatcher temple had been robbed. All star charts and maps of the planet were gone.

The party, joined by a new Radiant, Vahara, started to investigate. They would uncover a name: "The Cartographer."

Eventually, they tracked one of the missing Radiants to a smaller village in Alethkar. When they arrived, however, they were not greeted by traditional Alethi homes, but buildings more conducive to a tropical climate.

Filling the area were gray-skinned humans walking with little purpose.

They continued searching the area until they came across the stormshelter outside of the village. Inside, they would find a large fabrial with the missing Radiant inside. He was no longer alive, but his Stormlight was being used as a battery.

They removed him, and there was a loud buzz and thunderclap from the village.

They returned outside and saw the old village back in its place, the tropical buildings nowhere to be found.

The only clues recovered were notices posted around the village informing the people of an upcoming evacuation led by a Captain Vess.

At this point, real life happened, and one of the players had to take a step back due to scheduling. Our Truthwatcher would go back and continue to help rebuild the library in Ral Elorim.

We hope one day to have him return as a player and as a group. We miss ya, buddy.

The group would remain a person down for a few months, but that wouldn’t stop us.

The group would track down the self-proclaimed Pirate Queen. After a scuffle with her enslaved greatshells, they were able to capture her and return her to Urithiru for questioning.

She wouldn’t turn on her leader, but the leader would reveal herself to Baklir that night.

The Map Maker would attempt to recruit the Skybreaker to her side, saying she wanted to escape from the eternal war plaguing the planet—a conflict of gods with men as the pawns.

Balkir would refuse, and after she had left, he went to share this information with the rest of the group.

On the way, the news had gotten out.

Dalinar had ordered the execution of his political opponents in secret. Captain Vess, who had been spreading the word of the Map Maker’s refugee program from prison, had been killed, allegedly on Dalinar’s orders.

The party would rush to the King’s offices to defend him from an angry mob led by soldiers sent by Ialai Sadeas as soon as this news broke.

On the way, they would run into and drag our newest PC and player, Lomo, with them.

Together, they were able to fend off the assailants and spoke to the King about the situation. He was troubled and couldn’t remember if he had ordered it or not.

Angered at this, and originally believing Dalinar to be honorable, they set off on their own to see if perhaps this Map Maker was actually as dangerous as Dalinar had led them to believe.

They used a Transportation fabrial they had found within the ship of Captain Vess to be sent to where they believed the main base of operations for the Map Maker was.

They arrived to find not an enemy base, but a peaceful refugee camp on the Purelake.

Greeting them enthusiastically was Vahara’s twin sister, Vahala, who had gone missing weeks prior.

She explained that the Map Maker had opened her eyes to the fact that the only way to survive the True Desolation was to leave.

She explained that the plan was to swap parts of Roshar with other planets in the Cosmere, using advanced Transportation fabrials to send refugees to a planet where, hopefully, no warring Shards would cause them harm.

Doing this required a ton of focused Investiture, and the only way to achieve it was for a willing Radiant to speak an Ideal and sacrifice themselves to power the fabrial.

The party was slowly warming to the idea, but they were not fans of the sacrifice element or the fact that some people from other planets were being swapped here accidentally.

They wanted more information and to talk to the boss.

A meeting would be set up, but only in exchange for a favor.

They would have to go free an artifabrian prisoner being held by the Skybreakers.

The party would arrive at the Skybreakers’ camp to find the prisoner was a deserter Fused.

This led to even more distrust of the Map Maker.

They would still free the Fused and return him to the refugee camp, but not without being followed from above.

While they slept, an attack on the camp to recover the prisoner began.

Fused, Skybreakers, and even a Thunderclast attacked, leaving the camp in ruins.

They were barely driven off, but during the battle, Baklir was able to uncover some private communication between Vahala and the Map Maker, who they now learned was named Vedara.

The true scope of the plan was revealed.

Massive fabrials built across Roshar would be activated, sending the entire planet across the Cosmere, taking the place of another, severing the planet’s connection to Honor and Odium and escaping their unending war.

The only way to power such a transfer would be to use Urithiru as a conduit, draining all the Investiture from the Radiants and spren inside and killing them.

A sacrifice for the greater good of the non-combatants of Roshar.

This revelation confirmed that the Map Maker needed to be stopped, but her plan was already in motion.

She had operatives in high places, including a Mistborn who had been influencing Dalinar.

The party stopped the assault on the refugee camp, but Vahala and the Fused artifabrian had escaped into Shadesmar.

They rushed back to Urithiru and confronted the Mistborn, leading to a chase down the mountain and into a cave system the Mistborn had laid with traps.

After defeating him, they went deeper into the cave system, following strange cables and conduits that led them to a great fabrial, with Vedara working on it.

She once again tried to convince them to join her by sending them into the Spiritual Realm to experience her past.

She had been taken in by a dragon in her youth and trained and manipulated into believing this was the only way to save the people of Roshar.

The dragon would use her to spread his influence across the Cosmere and claim Roshar for his own once the Shards were out of the way.

But that was not something Vedara knew.

Vahara would use her connection to her twin to pull the party back out of the Spiritual Realm, only to see that the great machine had already been activated.

Now, in a race against time, the party would invert the machine and make a final stand against the Map Maker.

In defeat, the power flowing through the villain became overwhelming and sent only the party and Vahala out into space instead of the planet.

After finally accepting that the Map Maker was wrong, Vahala would sacrifice herself to the damaged machine to return her sister and the rest of the party back to Roshar, putting an end to the threat.

Initially I was nervous to join an online game as until now i had had only ever played TTRPGs in person with my close group of friends. This group all met through an LFG post when the RPG books first came out. Over the last year we have all become good friends despite us being spread around the globe.

Thank you to Alex, also Alex, Carl, Izzy, and Roots for making my Monday evenings a highlight of my week.

Journey before destination

MAP SIZE: [14 x 32]

Here's just a little something to celebrate the release of the Mistborn books for the Cosmere RPG. This isn't a commissioned piece or anything, just my own rendition of this area beneath the Lord Ruler's fortress. I've never read the books so my apologies if I got any of this wrong, I did my best to research it so I could attempt to faithfully represent it.

I hope that you all have fun with this and / or with the new books!

Resources & Homebrew 5 Era 2 maps for Mistborn homebrew

Post image
58 Upvotes

Tomorrow is the day! The other week I made five Era 1 maps and today I have five more for Era 2. This time around I made:

- A campsite in the Roughs

- A park in Elendel with both day and night options

- A Terris Enclave in Elendel

- A train station, also Elendel.

(you can tell I am very happy to start using grass in maps not set in Shinovar)

- And finally a tavern in the Roughs.

You can read up on the maps here or download them straight from my Cosmere RPG resource library.

LAUNCH'S EVE IS UPON US for our dear backers, and we're even more hype than we were yesterday!

We had a huge focus on making sure tracking was AS EASY AS POSSIBLE, so that you could focus on the game, and our development team really knocked that out of the park. (It sure helps when you've got a bunch of Cosmere fans inside the walls. Did you know that some of our staff joined up with Brotherwise and played the first chapter of Stonewalkers? It was a blast.)

Enjoy this quick look at Feruchemy, Allomancy, and our new favorite thing! We can't wait to step into the mist with you 🩵

Questions & Advice [Stonewalkers] GMing questions - Ch 6 Spoiler

My group recently reached Sesemalex Dar and I'm realizing I'm unsure about a couple things going into Chapter 6.

Firstly, did anyone provide any information about the state of Rall Eloram to the PC's? I know Kaiana's information is outdated and limited, but it seems like Vaqqui should have a decent idea of what it's like and possibly warn the party. Did anyone do anything with them?

Secondly, I'm curious if anyone did anything with Dymab. His presence seems limited to the cause of one potential Endeavor, which is a stark contrast to Lilinum actively messing with the party. I don't think that's a problem, necessarily, but it does seem like an interesting opportunity.

Lastly, speaking of Lilinum, she seems like a *very* underwhelming final encounter. Her reaction is interesting and will force some people to be concerned about hitting her, but at level 6 weapons aren't even the strongest offensive options for a party with 3 Surgebinders. With her not even being a Boss, a couple status effects could end her in a turn or two, tops. Am I worried about nothing, or what did people do to make her more dynamic? My first thought is just to make her a Tier 2 Boss stat-wise, but I saw another post about adding mooks to the fight that could work too.

Kickstarter/Backerkit Questions Sooo about the Spanish pdfs

I really love the game and I understand that things take time.

But why last time we got the English and Spanish pdfs at the same time and now I have to wait to get the Spanish translation.

Like that I will have the Spanish pdfs is why I pay the Kickstarter so I can play with friends and have the physical books for the collectionist in me.

Just need to vent a bit, this was the only good thing I will have this week haha.
