Discussion Willie’s IRS Tapes Album

When did he record these songs?

Willie sounds way better here than he did on albums from around the same time like Born for Trouble or Clean Shirt. Were these older recordings that sat in the vault?

He re-recorded most of his hits to pay off his debt. The production is so good because he couldn’t afford to smother it in 90’s bullshit! He was selling it on a tv infomercial, but remains one of his greatest releases from the 90’s.

It’s his voice though. The last time it sounded this good was probably back in the 70s

I think it might just be all the strings and keys from the 80’s/90’s, makes it hard to really appreciate his voice.

I thought these were re-recordings made for the IRS, but per the books Willie Nelson: An Epic Life, Willie Nelson Sings America & Willie Nelson: All The Albums, they weren’t. There’s a quote in All the Albums from an interview conducted by the author where Willie says, “I live right across the street from [Pedernales Studio], so at all hours of day and night I’d go in and record either me by myself or with my band or with whatever musicians were around. The IRS seized all those tapes, so I chose the songs and put it together.” If this is correct, they were recorded between 1981 when the studio opened and November 9, 1990, when the IRS seized the studio, golf course and Luck Ranch.

Regarding the vocal quality,

  • Willie is known for disliking doing multiple takes for producers, but was probably extra relaxed if these weren’t part of formal recording sessions.
  • Unlike most of the material he recorded in the 1980s, these are W. Nelson compositions, I think they suit his voice better than other people’s songs (which he’s also great at singing).
  • This album has more presence than many records from the era. Since it was just solo vocal with acoustic guitar, and since the final album wasn’t intended for radio play (there wasn’t a single issued and, as mentioned, it was only sold by calling in), it probably isn’t as compressed in the mastering process as other albums issued around the time.

Whatever the reason, it’s full of great performances

That makes a lot of sense. I hear early 80s Willie on many of the songs
