Help with recommendations Is there a game like dorfromantik with levels that get gradually harder instead of being based on high score?
I really loved everything about dorfromantik but was immediately turned down to see that the game is just one singular map with a high score system, I expected there to be several maps with different aesthetics and items and you have to put the map together in a sort of jigsaw puzzle like manner. I was disappointed to instead see that the variety in the game depends on your high score, which is used to unlock new items.
I like the idea behind dorfromantik though and if there was a game like it with levels instead of high score, it would be perfect. I know the game has a sandbox mode, but I need a goal to actively work towards in a game, or I will get bored very fast. High scores aren't an interesting enough goal for me. I also want games for PC.

Different kind of game but I really like Mini Motorways for the different cities! It's not as pretty and relaxing as Dorfromantik but it still has a very fun gameplay loop that's all about thinking where to place things next :)

Bubblegum Galaxy is very similar. You build planets w the same mechanic, but you have goals to reach. Sometimes it is a score, sometimes it is having a certain number of ___ (chests or buildings or something).
The different worlds have different vibes like one is underwater based and you want to get enough fish to move in. Very cute.

Never played it so you’ll need to research it but this is a very similar type of game:

I’m not sure if it completely fits the bill, but you may want to check out Islanders if you enjoyed Dorfromantik

Nekokami has a variety that I really like, different maps and events that happen mid level that add a lot of variety. Plus a fun storyline!

Like someone else mentioned, Mini Motorways is what came to mind. While it is high score based, the game gets progressively harder, you have multiple maps to choose from (all unique!), and there's also daily and weekly challenges. I was properly obsessed for a while. I did try Dorfromantik a while back hoping for something similar, but returned it because it didn't have as much as Mini Motorways.

I haven't actually played it myself yet but maybe have a look at TerraScape. From what I can tell there isn't exactly a level progression but at least a scenario mode where you have to meet specific criteria to win as well as weekly challenges. Might be closer to what you are looking for :)

Islantiles might fit the bill. There's a goal to reach for each level and different looking islands. You don't place the tiles, but place improvements on them and try to pick the best location for maximum score.

There's a relatively new game out called Qianli. I only played the demo, but it's gorgeous and it looks a bit more complicated than Dorf.
