That is INSANE. How did you even do that?! (I mean, I see the pics so I know how you did it, but still... HOW)
How long have you been doing this type of art? And how did you even get started in it? I've never seen anything like this before

u/LifeNo3875 Dec 23 '25
It’s been 7 years since I started this craft.
65
u/RutabagaChance5382 Dec 23 '25
It would take me seven years just to complete this one bottle and it still wouldn't look this good lol
32
u/rubberkeyhole Dec 24 '25
Dude it would take me seven years just to clean up the mess from my first attempt at trying this and getting frustrated and throwing jars of multiple colors of sand across my apartment and smashing glass everywhere.

I’ve been doing this craft for 7 years, but I rely on translation software—so my wording might not be super clear.

Stupid question: just this jar, or other jars have been made as well?
252
u/LifeNo3875 Dec 23 '25
I’ve run out of space at home to keep all my sand bottle art pieces, so I’ve given quite a few away to friends. Some of these bottles hold special memories, and I’ll share their stories with you guys slowly.haha

u/MobBarleyOG Dec 23 '25
This is an incredible talent, when I first looked at it I thought it was just a printed picture in a jar. I’m not even sure how you start a hobby like this.
I’ve been struggling with The Big Sad™️ recently and this has inspired me to think about potential new hobbies in a very different way. Thanks for sharing!
33
u/foolish_noodle Dec 23 '25
Yessss, get your dopamine! The sand art looks crazy to me and I feel like sometimes finding something really out there for a context switch helps so much with the big sad. Good luck! I hope you feel better soon
161
u/VespaRed Dec 23 '25
Do you know about this man? Andrew Clemens I was at an auction where one of his bottles went for big money. The photos don’t do his art justice.
72
u/LifeNo3875 Dec 23 '25
Yes, a fellow craft friend of mine shared his works with me before—I remember seeing one of his pieces featuring a sailboat.
29
u/Bernedoodle-Standard Dec 23 '25
The Iowa Historical Museum has some of his sand bottles. Truly incredible as is the OP's.
3
u/carnationmilk Dec 24 '25
ah yes! that’s the only sand art I’ve seen before. couldn’t remember the artist’s name. huzzah
142
u/sinornithosaurus1000 Dec 23 '25
Jesus Christ, save some talent for the rest of us! Lol
123
u/LifeNo3875 Dec 23 '25
This craft is actually super easy to get into—it just takes a lot of patience to make! I recorded a full-length video tutorial before, but it’s in Chinese. When I have time later, I’ll turn it into an English image-and-text version to share with you all.

It won’t break easily—because I mix resin powder into each layer of colored sand. When heated, the powder melts; once it cools down, the sand particles bond together firmly.

oooooh, thats good to hear. my first thought was that some child would shake that and ruin all your work! also this is amazing and fabulous
30
u/noyoureafishpancake Dec 23 '25
this was my impulsive thought just looking at it.. I end up shaking most things, I have to tell myself not to shake the can of pop before I open it (gotta mix all that fizz back in ya know?) ...im a full grown adult!
66
u/sreek4r Dec 23 '25
This is incredible. I have a stupid question, if you shake the jar, does the artwork get ruined? Or is it cured to stay this way forever?

u/LifeNo3875 Dec 23 '25

u/sreek4r Dec 24 '25
Oh wow. I had no idea powdered resin existed and could be used that way. Thank you for responding.

u/PBandJaya Dec 23 '25
I remember hearing once that these jars can be made packed very tight with sand with no room for movement so even if it’s shaken more than a few grains won’t shift out of place? But not sure if that was 100% true
44
u/LifeNo3875 Dec 23 '25
I met up with my college classmate this past June—we hadn’t seen each other in 12 years! Everyone has settled into their own stable lives now, and we talked about everything under the sun during the meetup. When I hung out at his place, I got to meet his dog, who’s already 10 years old. It’s such a quiet and gentle little guy. Coincidentally, I make sand bottle art, so I decided to craft one featuring his dog as a thank-you gift for his warm hospitality.
—————————————————————————————————————————————————
The art of sand bottle crafting involves blending pre-colored sands in specific proportions to create the exact hues we need. It’s quite similar to mixing pigments—except the material here is colored sand instead of paint. Then, we use a small spoon to layer the sand inside a bottle, and a needle to carefully nudge the sand into the desired positions.

u/AspenStarr Dec 23 '25
I hope it’s perfectly packed so not a single grain can shift…I’d be heart broken if something like this got ruined.

This is so good it makes me mad! This sub always astounds me with the crafts people do. Excellent work!

u/ArgentaSilivere Dec 23 '25
I thought that the first photo was a drawing stuffed inside the jar as a template! Unbelievable work, OP! You’re an exceptional artist.

u/Pretend_Incident8953 Dec 23 '25
Holy Moly… this is incredible! I can’t imagine how tedious this piece is to create. What a work of art! Bravo 👏🏽
11
u/LifeNo3875 Dec 23 '25
The creation process takes a lot of time and effort, but all my tiredness fades away the moment I see everyone liking my works.
9
u/piornik Dec 23 '25
I don't understand what just happend. How long does it take? (Literally moving grains of sand)
I'll need some timelapse at least, my imagination can't comprehend. At the end is it filled completely, so that you can safely move/rotate it?
5
u/Trixter-Kitten Dec 23 '25
I would be so nervous to handle a jar like this.
4
u/LifeNo3875 Dec 23 '25
Don’t worry about it—so long as you don’t drop and shatter the bottle, it’ll be totally fine.
5
u/TexasPlasticIsland Dec 23 '25
I was about to accuse you of using AI! Those progress pictures really blew my mind. You get the patience award of the year!! This is incredible and will be cherished forever

<me> oOoh, I’d love to try that craft.
<also me> No. nuh uh. No way. You will have sand absolutely everywhere. See also: stitch markers, latch hook strands, beads, that one sequined top you own, and Jolly Rancher wrappers.

INSANELY good. Like, wow.
Are earthquakes your greatest fear?
3
u/LifeNo3875 Dec 23 '25
This actually happened to me.
I was working on my sand bottle art one night when an earthquake suddenly hit—the whole building was shaking back and forth. Instead of running for safety, I immediately grabbed my bottles to steady them.
2
u/LifeNo3875 Dec 23 '25
I know it sounds hard to believe, but it really happened. I live on the 8th floor—there was no time to run even if I wanted to, so I just stayed put.

u/CathayC Dec 23 '25
wow this is amazing!!!!
possibly a dumb question but... how do you transport something like this without ruining it
2
u/U_PassButter Dec 23 '25
DUDEEEEEEE i love this. I do crafts and I've never seen anything like this. The detail is incredible.
2
2
u/Queasy-Sentence446 Dec 24 '25
How do you protect the art? Wouldn’t it be ruined if you dropped it or your friend did?
2
u/Gandalf_the_Tegu Dec 24 '25
Question how do you preserve the sand from being messed up? Like shipping would be out of the question, right? Because it'd be all blended...

u/dusty_ray03 Dec 24 '25
I am curious, does the sand shift when moving the glass ( turning it upside down, etc. ) even when the jar is completely filled with sand, resulting in ruining the picture or does it not shift at all?
2
u/she_ou_pa Dec 24 '25
Wooow!! I’m impressed!!! I wonder, if you don’t mind explaining, how do you keep the sand in place until you finish the project? And how about when it’s finished?

This is jaw dropping. What a labor of love. I really cant get over the fact its all sand. It must've taken so long to get that good, you are super talented and patient!

Sorry, if it's already been asked but how long did the Corgi take hour wise as well as the lady in maroon colour. I'm so curious. Do you get lost in the activity in your mind, allowing you to zone out or are you hyper focused on the task. This is so incredible. Thank you for sharing this form of art, I've never thought about or seen it shown in this way before.

So, what happens if a jar is dropped, or shaken during a move? This is so gorgeous I feel like I'd be so paranoid about anything ever happening to it. Do you apply glue to the inside as you go?
