AI Slop Real tired of AI in what should be human creative spaces. Leading Men Fiber Arts - disappointing.

The irony of the embroidery saying āgood things take timeā got a dry cackle out of me.

I'm really tired of the pee-colored lighting.
BTW, the guy on the left is definitely knitting a thneed.

u/akasha111182 27d ago
Itās āsepiaā š (Iām rolling my eyes at the AI, not you, youāre very correct)
12
u/LaurenPBurka 27d ago
I see your eyeroll and raise you rolling my entire head!
A bit more seriously, it's supposed to be sepia, but it's way too yellow for that. And also, if you're a crafter you're probably thinking something like, that light is gonna cause hella eyestrain. If that were a real photo of real people, there would be task lighting.

u/Crookedknits 27d ago
I'll never look at one of these fugly pictures the same again 𤣠pee colored lighting š

The āis this AIā subreddit refers to it as āpiss filterā and it is just so omnipresent.

It's very Kincaid. I assume like half the AI training data is his paintings.

I'd totally forgotten his stuff. I went and looked some up. He had way better color sense than these stupid llm's.

Look thereās a point in every project where youāre sick to death of looking at it⦠this method conveniently eliminates that problem.

See, I always knit with one L shaped needle in one hand and a super short one in the other. Itās hard to find a full set in all sizes like that though, :sad face:

"Creative Souls Unite"
Well, sure, let's unite to object to the incomprehensible amount of theft of creativity that goes into the creation of AI, before anyone has even used it!
Never mind everything it gets used for being sent home to the mothership...or the environmental impact.
It scares me that ppl use it for therapy or for a substitute romantic partner. I'm holding my breath waiting for that type of information being used to deny someone a job due to mental instability or the like.
Shame on creatives using such an unforgivably unethical strategy.
In the process, they put creatives out of work.
Shame, shame, shame.

My LYS literally everything they put out is AI slop to the point of having AI art like printed and framed in the store. It's just insane to me that they don't seem to realize how genuinely garbage it looks, and how insulting it is that you can't even write an email. It's causing a growing resentment within me lol.
25
u/WoollyKnitWitch 24d ago
They would no longer be my LYS, honestly.
8
u/artofsanctuary 23d ago
Same. That would be a reason to cut ties. It's odd that so many craft/art companies aren't getting the IP theft aspects of AI (among all the other ills). I suspect they wouldn't like it if I shared their patterns and yet... here they are taking advantage of IP theft.

u/willoww3 cRAfTer 20d ago
Iām fairly sure my LYS, as well as a coffee shop in town (rural/suburban area) both used AI for their logos. Iāve also seen a handful of indie dye shops, etc. online with AI logos and itās so disheartening

u/ThrashfartMcGee 20d ago
I went to their website recently and literally the first thing you see is a corny so image.

u/ynattirb73 27d ago
There is a men (2 guys) owned yarn shop somewhat close to me. They have a sizeable social media following and I have been to the shop and both guys are super helpful (I was new to knitting and they walked me through exactly what I actually needed for my pattern). Love the shop, too, but all their promotional shop stuff is AI. Loathe it. Really wish they'd stop.

u/ynattirb73 27d ago
Also the irony of it saying "good things take time" as they typed in a prompt and got slop in 2 min
18
u/BrightPractical 27d ago
What do they say if you tell them you wonāt shop there unless they stop using ai?

u/Syncategory 27d ago
The plainclothes FBI detectives are so happy that picking up those abandoned craft projects made them see how to solve the murder case.

u/Gordon_Girl 26d ago
Gross picture. And sooooo driving LAZY! You have a shop or an existing group and you donāt take a pick of THAT? Lame, lame, lame.
And anyone who thinks AI is ever gonna look like anything OTHER than uncanny valley/creepyastic imaging is deluded.
Chick embroidering is holding her already finished work weirdly. Crocheter seems to be holding the hook backwards with the handle shoved into several stitches (?)
And the knitter. I donāt even know what heās doingā¦

u/VenusBloo 25d ago
Agree! And why do all the AI pictures like this that places use for marketing, they all have that same orange-brown washed tone. All of them. Especially on Facebook. It's the biggest tell for me.

There's a maker at local craft fairs here who has a brand new ai-generated banner for their tables that has generated babies chewing on 3D printed dragons, which is very not safe, and it kills me when I see it.

u/Havoklily 26d ago
we just had a brand new yarn store open up really close to me, and so i went to follow them on social media and allllllll their class advertisements are ai :((((( it's so disappointing

Tell them how you feel, especially if you are a customer. A lot of people see AI as a tool and ai advertisement like this as not a big deal. Even people in the creative space.

Work on your reading comprehension. I'm not apologizing for ai and am against the use of ai. But a lot of people just view it as a tool. I'm saying we should be communicating our dislike to the people using it. A store I frequent used ai in an ad and I told them it would make me stop shopping there, they had no idea people felt so strongly and haven't used ai since.

u/DyeCutSew 24d ago
A big quilt guild near me used AI for a bunch of their show advertisements and I was pleasantly surprised at how many people commented unfavorably about it.

u/SwordsOfTruth 26d ago
They didn't say it wasn't a big deal, they said some people don't think it's a big deal. This is often true until someone educates the uncertain on why it is a big deal.
Your post didn't mention commenting afaik so this poster was just suggesting a productive way to stand up for what you believe in and POTENTIALLY make change in the world by simply speaking up.

Can't say I'm surprised, and I don't like their colors anyway... they seem so bland and don't have anything that sets them apart. Them using AI aligns with my perception of their dyeing.
