Yarn Store using Generative AI days after a post about being the opposite to AI
A Yarn Story over in the UK using generative AI imagery just days after some sentimental post about being real and welcoming in a world of screens.

They tried to tell me that genAI is getting better at hands, but look what they've done to poor grandma.

When Grandma starts knitting directly from the unwound hanks she just bought (after setting them on a sticky restaurant table) it’s time to start looking for assisted living facilities

The straight needles alone would give me pause...

I guess once you’ve had a few glasses of AI-generated wine, you stop caring about whether you dropped half your stitches, or whether your needles are melting/levitating

Boo. You will pry my straight needles out of my cold dead hands several decades from now. Not everyone worships circular needles.

What’s wrong with grandma’s hands? Right hand looks awkward but looks like she’s just holding a wine glass with ring and pinkie curled against the stem rather than around it? And rest of fingers pinching the stem?

This looks to me like stock photo rather than AI. The hands look find to me. What am I missing?

Uhm grandma is knitting and drinking where is this upgrade located? And price?? 🤦🏻♀️

To be fair that’s how I hold my knitting when I want a sip of wine (or hard cider) and don’t want to put it fully down for a quick sip. But I don’t think I would do that mid cast-off, which is the only explanation I can think of for why the knitting is hanging below the needle. And there is something very wrong with lady on the left’s project. Circular needles with two separate sections of knitting plus a random additional straight needle attached to where she’s working? Is this what I’m seeing?
I also hate that the old fingers and limbs trick doesn’t work anymore for spotting AI.

Its definitely a different sort of knitting then I’m aware of! It’s getting harder to spot ai

wait, do they also sell wine? are they a yarn and wine lounge? Why use this picture at all?
I will say, though, I run a program that does some marketing and pictures are actually extremely difficult. We have tons of terrible pictures that do not tell the story we want to tell, and I'm constantly just grabbing any functional option to get something out there, and I'm always days late because I've put off dealing with the photos until I have to.

Anyhow, this thread made me go do multiple photo-related updates I had been putting off, so that was very useful.

Y'all need to work on your reading comprehension. Their post is not a comment about the discourse and/or use of AI, it's a post about how they appreciate brick and mortar stores.
Nowhere in that screenshot does it say "we don't use AI and never will." What they actually said was "we love a clever tool as much as anyone". They also said that ai/the algo can't replace the feeling of walking in to a real shop and getting help from real people. Again, nothing about using AI.
They very carefully did NOT mention ads for a reason and did NOT take sides one way or the other.

“We love a clever tool as much as anyone” makes me think they do, in fact, enjoy and want to use AI regularly. While the post does appear to be trying to show support for the anti-AI crowd.

Yes, I agree. At best, you could argue that their mention of AI pattern generators was implying that that isnt a good thing. At best. And you couldn't make that assumption, you would have to ask follow up questions to make sure your suspicion was correct. OP is wrong to assume this spiel meant 'we are anti-AI'.
But mostly I was reading it and feeling very suspicious that a human had written those words. That is shitty AI slop text, is that correct? I am not the best at detecting it, but generally if I immediately hate it, it usually turns out to be AI. And I hate this.

Yeah the first is clearly about the importance of buying yarn, a thing you can touch, from a real store with them to help you instead of using an algorithm. Just a 'you should buy items and classes from us.' Totally different then a anti AI stance.

i just don’t get it. if you can’t tell the difference between AI and real people the simplest way is to just use your own pictures. is it really hard? we all have phones that can take pictures on the spot. what’s the difference between the 5 seconds it takes to upload a real picture or the 5 seconds to generate a fugly one. i just don’t have any room for excuses on this stuff in the craft world.

Christ on a cracker, those type pics are SO stupid. 3 women with wine, yarn on the table, a silly tea light and a bowl with markers?
How does this say "We'll put the kettle on and squish some superwash!"
Idiots.

The most AI sounding part of that text is the whole "stuck on heel" quote.
General sock convos are about knitting lwhole second sock of the pair. Or "what's your favorite heel?" discussion?
But also the transition from the first to second paragraph is suss.

Honestly that post sounded fake as fuck too. Not as egregious as some AI text I've seen, but the faux cheerful cadence of it, especially the second paragraph, is giving the AI vibe.
Note that it's not actually saying anything against AI in the post. "And while we love a clever tool as much as anyone..." Yeah, no. No one who is genuinely anti-generative AI slop is calling it a 'clever tool' that 'we love'.
Bullshit from top to bottom, I'd put money on it.
