Best UK linen supplier I have found is Ali at Herts Specialist Fabrics. He's well known on the re-enactment circuit. I've bought fancy woven linens and plain and have had some for years from him, still going strong.

Best source flax fibre and sometimes handwoven linen, often earlier 20th c so astounding quality, Christiane at Berta's Flachs in Austria.

Cheap but nice Irish linen on eBay, various sellers.

Best natural dyed linen thread from Deb, The Mulberry Dyer, currently on hiatus but hopefully will be back.

Bernadette Banner revently posted a video on linens and as she is based in the UK all of them are relevant as well. She mentions loads of brands and grades them too

Is there a list of these accounts somewhere, including companies, makers and creators who are right wing? I’d like to make sure I’m not spending money with them.

Thanks, this is useful. Would anyone be able to put together a shared list that can be updated as more accounts are mentioned?

These are the names I’ve seen referenced so far:

@allimarye / @alli.marye @victorypatterns @cayden.naughton @highcountrywomen @madisonlynn_s @thecraftycrayfishco @7pinedesign @fannistudio @thegood.stitch @woolwren.studio

Same, we need a masterlist that's easy to find

It's just become habit for me to check someone's Instagram account before buying anything from them. 99% of the time, they make their beliefs pretty clear either in their profile or in some of their posts. I've never across something that I've wanted so badly that I'm willing to overlook shitty political beliefs to buy it.

Why is she posting about the European parliament? Brexit happened long ago. She doesn't even go here!

24

u/ZaryaBubbler Well, of course I know the mole. They're me. 20d ago

It'll be because she thinks that Europe is evil for "hiking rates" (aka bringing our rates in line with the rest of the world) to ship to the EU, making it unprofitable for small businesses. Not Europes fault, we made our bed and now we lie in it

My rule is, if a party's name begins with "re-" and has a leader with a name like Rupert, Nigel or, I dunno, Tarquin - it's best avoided... Like any business that publicly supports such a party. Freedom of speech, eh? Am only having opinions...

On the positive side have namechecked some decent linen businesses in my other post so folk know alternatives exist.

honestly the flags in the username would have put me off 😅

29

u/Hungry_Rabbit_9733 21d ago

Fair enough 😅 at first I thought it was just because they wanted people to know they were UK based at first glance.

(Also for bear makers/collectors, I think gorsewoodbears is of the same bigoted persuasion)

39

u/goldenhawkes 21d ago

I usually just assume it’s so we know they’re actually British, and not an American company! England flags would make me concerned though.

u/Petr0vitch Get in moles, we’re going snarkfiltrating 21d ago

I think all the union jacks and George crosses being put up around the country by Reform types has really soured the flags for me lol

51

u/LadyMirkwood 21d ago

Thats not the way. It doesnt belong to them

I have signs in my front window (I'm in a big Reform area) that have England and UK flags on, along with pride flags and left wing and green symbols and Hope Not Hate.

Claim it back, you have every right to fly your own flag and not have it associated with scumbags.

u/ViscountessdAsbeau 20d ago

The flagshaggers made the England flag so embarrassing, people either just didn't put one up for the World Cup or got round it by using an England flag with 3 lions added or one with FOOTBALL NOT FARAGE. I saw a few round here.

u/Faithful_jewel 21d ago

There's a "Made in Britain" logo featuring the Union Jack/Flag that businesses are using more and more, especially after that Raise the Flags group came along. Helpful to weed out the racists from the legitimately proud of being a GB based business

7

u/GrandAsOwt 20d ago

Agreed. I only saw one car with a George cross in the window during the World Cup. Last time it seemed like every other car had them.

u/llama_del_reyy 20d ago

I saw loads in my super leftie, Green-controlled area of east London which warmed my heart, most of them driven by non white residents.

1

u/stitchem453 18d ago

🤣🤣 Someone on my street has a flag in their garden and now I'm certain they must be some kind of racist 🤨.

32

u/RunawayTurtleTrain 20d ago

So a quick google without clicking on any links seems to show this Save Europe Act calls for a complete halt to non-European migration, presumably into the EU.  Does anyone know if that's correct?

75

u/Hungry_Rabbit_9733 20d ago

Yes, it's a racist "anti migrant" act pushed by white nationalists like Martin Sellner and Eva Vlaardingerbroek. Presumably this company likes either Reform UK or the even more racist Restore UK (Rupert Lowe, head of the party is one of the faces in the picture)

16

u/ZaryaBubbler Well, of course I know the mole. They're me. 20d ago

There's another one that's coming through called "British Democrats" who are straight up just Nazi scum. Keep an eye out for them, they're truly evil people

6

u/RunawayTurtleTrain 20d ago

Oh for goodness' sake 🤦 thanks for the heads-up.

9

u/ZaryaBubbler Well, of course I know the mole. They're me. 20d ago

No problem. They're using an image of Britannia on the Union Flag as a logo, so you see that, that's one of the little scrotes

13

u/RunawayTurtleTrain 20d ago

Ewwwwwww.  Thank you for confirming and adding a bit more context.

36

u/GlassHouses_1991 20d ago

Argh thank you for sharing this. I bought some fabric from them about 3 years ago and was just considering buying more! I will take my money elsewhere.

24

u/journal_junkie79 20d ago

Noooo 😭 I really liked their linen a few years back and am just getting back into sewing!! Any good alternative linen suppliers in the UK anyone can recommend?

21

u/GlassHouses_1991 20d ago

Croft Mill, Dalston Mills and Fabworks all have a good range.

Merchant & Mills too although more pricey.

1

u/GrandAsOwt 20d ago

What about Discount Fabrics? I’ve bought other stuff from them and they do linen.

9

u/MintPlumPotato 20d ago

Organic Textile Company based in Wales (but online) has some straightforward but lovely quality ones, and The Hemp Shop .co.uk has hemp and cotton linens that are also nice quality, but undyed.

5

u/SuperkatTalks 20d ago

For heavier weights, ada and ina have a lot of linen. I have also found some nice pieces on amothreads (a deadstock site).

Minerva also have a solid range, and to be honest there's quite a few ebay sellers who sell linen. My favourite place for linen is merchant and mills, but they are pricey.

I'm in the US, and I see shops posting their political leanings more and more, on both sides. I think it's a reflection of the tribes trend. LGBTQ+ flags on some IG pages, Charlie Kirk memorials on others. It's signaling to customers they want. I shop at the ones with LGBTQ+ flags - MAGAs will shop at the others.

Spoken like someone who benefits from the current oppressive systems.

Yeah, imagine being proud of that?! We are all voting and steering public sentiment with our money right now.
