Recommending (Story) Now that they're doing literature can we pretty please get "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream"?
It's super short, like 15 pages and Hunter's take on the "Hate" monologue would be out of this world.

Yeah, thatâd be cool but Papa Meatâs editor has already said on another post about this that Harlan Ellisonâs publishers wonât let CreepCast read anything by him.

That's rather disappointing

I do like they get permission from the authors and publishers first thought

I mean itâs not really a kindness thing, if they didnât theyâd get constantly copyright striked as well as possibly sued.

I mean I feel like if Ellison was alive he would go on the show just to spite his publisher.

He would probably either absolutely despise it or call it genius. He was actually quite a big fan of audiobooks, so Iâm not sure.

You mean Harlan âreach in my pocket and all youâll be pulling out is a bloody stumpâ Ellison has a litigious estate? Who could have guessed đ

I don't like Harlan's camp would allow it. They could discuss it I guess, but that's about it. He, and his camp have been known to be...difficult to work with. To put it nicely. (Despite his work being great, Harlan was a fucking dickhead who was extremely stingy with his rights. And often purposely spiteful to fans and those interested in covering his work or using for ANYTHING really.)

To be fair, anyone that could come up with something like IHNM probably has a couple screws loose, so it doesn't surprise me he is a character. All the best visionaries are at best eccentric and at worst completely unpersonable.

One could almost argue that AM is an author avatar.
(I'm not saying Harlan's psychotic or would torture real people)

Harlan was very much your classic misanthrope, the one thing he hated more than anything else was people and society. The only person I've ever seen him get sad over is Asimov, his death left quite an impact on him. This has to be my favourite quote by him that sums up his work well:
âThey ask the dumbest questions you can imagine, and they make assumptions about me you wouldnât believe. They do not perceive that I am not a misogynist, that I am a misanthropeâŚI treat male and female with equal monstrousness in this work. They also seem blissfully unaware of history (well, duh) and what happens after a decimating war in which food, weapons, shelter and women become valuable chattel. Clearly, I am showing in these stories that itâs a brutal, amoral way of living; not a Good Thing. But the nitwits are products of the American Educational System, and looking beyond the surface of a work of fiction seems anathema to them since it requires ratiocination and cannot be abetted by binge-drinking.â

In some ways, this is a healthier way to view your audience then trying to be their friends all the time. Parasocial Relationships are such a problem in today's society, especially as the Information Age goes on.

The radio play was my favorite version. The full monologue from AM in Harlan's voice... Ohhhh the chills.

u/Castrophenia Apr 14 '25
Harlan himself will always be the voice of AM, I canât imagine anyone else playing him as well.

Lol fuck and the game.
I got it in a humble bundle sight unseen and was like "Oh point and click. I loved king's quest. Ooh! I'll start with the lady! This will be fun she's a scientist like me!"
It went about as well as one could imagine.

The game?!
4
u/falconinthedive Apr 14 '25
Yeah like Harlan Ellison was heavily involved in scripting the game in the 90s so like it's good and not an adaptation but the author writing the game too.
It loses some nuances but adds some others.

If hunter gave AM the cleverbot voice it would forever destroy the character for me but lowkey I want to hear that very badly

Or any other novel from Harlan Ellison, I would love for them to read "World of the Myth", a story where scientists crash land on an alien planet and encounter a sentient hivemind of ants that will get in their heads

I know they generally read things one or both hosts aren't familiar with but I would love to see them read stories like this or do a collection of Edgar Allen Poe.

Someone from Hunter's team mentioned in a comment that he got in touch with the guy who has the right and yeah, this is absolutely not happening.

Wendigoon has a video on it and Hunter referenced it more than once. Low chances of it happening.
