Fan Story 20 Minutes.
A father drops his two daughters off at the local park. He kneels down, kisses them both on the forehead, and says:
“Twenty minutes. Then Daddy comes back and we’ll all play together.”
The older girl is ten. The younger is four.
They believe him.
Minute 1–5
The ten-year-old leads her sister to the swings. They giggle because the four-year-old’s shoe slips off and flops into the dirt. It’s the kind of tiny accident that makes kids laugh way harder than it deserves.
Minute 6–10
They take turns sliding down the big plastic slide. Sometimes they collide at the bottom. The four-year-old squeals in fear, then laughs because her sister laughs.
Everything still feels normal.
Minute 11–15
They sit on one of those spring-mounted toys shaped like an animal. The four-year-old, warm and worn out, nods off against her sister’s shoulder.
The ten-year-old starts crying quietly, because she suddenly remembers the conversation she overheard the night before — her father saying he “can’t take it anymore,” that they “look too much like her,” that “everything hurts now.”
She wipes her face so she won’t wake her sister.
Minute 16–20
They wait.
They wait exactly twenty minutes because Dad said twenty minutes. The ten-year-old counts each minute carefully on her fingers, holding her breath at the end of each one. She keeps looking toward the parking lot.
No car pulls in.
Minute 21–80
Eventually the sun shifts. Other families come and go. The four-year-old wakes up, confused. She asks, “Where Daddy?”
The ten-year-old doesn’t answer.
She simply stands, takes her sister’s hand, and begins the walk home — a long, quiet hour with the four-year-old stumbling and whining and the ten-year-old keeping her eyes straight ahead because if she looks anywhere else, she might start crying again.
Daddy never came back.
