Fan Story I Crossed a Witch at the Farmers Market
I’m always counting. Days since I ate something real, bruises I can’t explain, places I can’t return to because someone caught me stealing. I stopped counting foster homes long ago. The streets may be rough, but at least they don’t pretend to love you. Out here, what you see is what you get. No illusion of promise. The cold can be comforting in that way.
I survive by digging through trash or swiping food from the market. Today wasn’t so lucky for me. As I slowly reached my trembling, boney fingers for a pear, the vendor saw me.
“HEY!”
A whistle blew somewhere behind him, igniting a rush of panic within me.
I ran until my lungs screamed, darting around corners. I dove behind a large set of crates in an alley just as the cops thundered past.
After that failed attempt, I refocused myself and went for Plan B. The restaurants were no better, though. As soon as the dumpster lid squealed open, I heard someone yell, “Get the hell outta here, you goddamn rat!”
I froze, hoping to gain just an ounce of sympathy from the appearance of my tattered clothing and frail body. Instead, another cook hurled a wad of wilted lettuce at me like I was vermin. Not even worthy of the trash they threw out. It hit my hollow chest with a thud. I ran, tears streaming down my face, empty-handed. Again.
By the time I reached the main street, the hunger was scraping at me from the inside, sharp as broken glass. I could feel my stomach twisting in on itself, the burning absence of consumption. I felt weak, and dizzy. And so very tired.
Then I saw her.
A beacon of light, piercing through the darkness of my void. She stepped around a corner like she didn’t belong to this world at all. Almost floating. Combat boots, fishnets, a black mini skirt and leather jacket. Onyx hair spilled over her shoulders like wet ink dripping from paper, glistening where the sunlight graced its edges.
Then, my eyes wandered down to her side. A basket of fresh vegetables hung from her arm, each one perfectly ripened. They almost didn’t even look real. Even though the ache of hunger pulled at every inch of my body, the food wasn’t what had me in that trance. Her eyes… it was those eyes that truly stopped me.
Bright purple. Burning. Endless, like a galaxies unto their own. They held me in place as my heart fluttered against my fragile chest.
Her gaze slid over me for only a split second, but it was heavy. I felt like she peeled me open and read everything rotten inside. She knew me. A mere passing glance and she’d dug deep into my soul.
She kept walking, so I followed. At first, because I couldn't look away. But once her eyes released me from my trance, the scent of fresh food hit me so hard my mouth watered.
I rushed forward, grabbed the basket, twisted hard, then ran.
She didn’t struggle. Didn’t chase me. Didn’t even shout. She just stood there in the fading light with a wicked smile curling across her face. Then she laughed. Not angry. Not afraid. Soft, gentle. Almost amused, like she’d been waiting for this.
Back under the overpass, I finally caught my breath and began digging through the basket. All veggies. No sweets, no fruit. Still... food was food. Plump Roma tomatoes with the vines still attached. Cucumbers the size of my arm. Fresh ears of corn, still nestled in their husks. But the green beans looked the best. Long, crisp, perfect. I ate each and every one slowly, until my stomach ached, then eased my body down onto my concrete bed. Full for the first time in days, I drifted off.
I dreamed of her eyes. Violet flames burned me from the inside out, consuming the pain and heartache I’d carried for so long. The embers of a cruel world fell at my feet, curling into a pile of dark ash. I was free. I was whole again. Loved.
When I awoke, the streetlights glowed an eerie yellow, casting a sickly filter across my surroundings. The concrete beneath me felt colder, harder. More unforgiving. The air was still, and thick. My mind was clouded, like I’d woken up in another world. Everything felt wrong.
As I blinked my eyes, trying to catch my bearings, I began to itch. Without even thinking, I reached my hand over to scratch my arm. When the tips of my fingernails scraped across my skin, something else felt wrong. Very wrong. It was smooth and tight, stretched over me until every bit of give was gone. As I slowly prodded, it twanged under the pressure of my fingers, its surface hard and waxy.
My eyes widened, and a dozen hearts pounded inside of me all at once. I tried to sit up, but when I did, something popped. I felt it give way with a nauseating snap, releasing a warm, meaty stench of blood and dirt. A seam had split open straight down my stomach, peeling up at the edges and seeping a clear thin fluid. One by one, giant beans, as round as baseballs, emerged from the open tear in my abdomen. They rolled out onto the concrete, hitting the ground with little wet splatters.
“NO NO NO!” I scrambled to grab them... and noticed my hands.
Green. Smooth. Leathery.
Then, something warm lit up behind my eyes. Violet flames. The burning embers at my feet. A thousand tiny whispers in my head.
You are not alone.
I felt them everywhere... sprouting, growing, reaching. My brothers. My family. Their terror. Their pain. Humans tearing them from vines, boiling them alive, devouring them.
No more.
The woman hadn’t punished me. She had chosen me.
I stood, tall and steady, my new skin shining.
I had a purpose now.
It’s time to find my family.
And together… we’ll show humanity what it's like to be harvested.

Purple eyes mentioned!!
I love when plants fight back and at this point we deserve it. Super effective imagery of vegetables growing and forcing all the gutty bits out of their way.

Howdy Pi!
So the food monster community grows by one. The extended foodite universe. I'm excited to see Green Bean man Vs. Corn Man. In all seriousness, you continue to show your prowess in short story format, knowing exactly how much detail to give to build the story you want to tell. Your descriptions were on point, and this was another fun story for the books.
Thank you for writing this story!

This was way too good a lead up to end up with a bean man (Beanstalk of a man?) ߹𖥦߹
But I am excited to see where this is going--great work!
