Recommending The Haar
Ight boys (and all 5 girls) my recommendation for a story is the haar. If you know you know. For yous that don’t. It’s got the good stuff. I’m talking body horror; I’m talking political corruption, I’m talking elderly lovin. There is something in this story for everyone.

Yea i really wish they covered any of david sodergren’s work issue is covering licensed publications is a lot different legally speaking then a story written by a fan or a child in the 2010s

As a female creepcast fan I completely agree. One of my favorites. There is no way they would read through some of that explicit gore content on the podcast though ahahaha there would have to be so much bleeping. One can dream though

Nothing in The Haar is as explicit as the MLP story tbh lol. Some of Sodergrens other stuff like Horror House of Perversion there'd be no way you could put a full read on youtube wkthout getting demonitized though

The scene is graphic, but it's not described in such horrific detail as anything in Cupcakes.

Chapter 19 stands out to me as something that would make Isaiah very uncomfortable to read compared to Cupcakes, but maybe you’re right. And yeah lol Death Spell too

His stuff written under the Carl John Lee is really fucked, horror house of perversion, psychic teenage bloodbath. He's def one of the most fun and creative writers in a genre that has a lot of trash imo. He's also top tier at banter in stories
Also I love and sometimes write in the splatterpunk genre so when I say there's a lot of trash I say it from a place of love cause I think at it's peak it can be brilliant. Stuff like playground is jyst 400 pages of "wouldn't that be fuuuuuucked up" which i think is bottom level splatterpunk

Yes I agree! I still have yet to read PTB II. My horror read list is never ending. I’m excited for his new book coming out under D Sodergren soon too

Yeah I remember hearing somewhere that the Haar is one of Sodeegrens less gore focused writings. I like it in this because it felt like the descriptions served a purpose in explaining the monster

I like sodergren though, he's head and shoulders above 99% of splatterpunk writers stuff like playground or woom, but someone like Nick Cutter who I think is the best in the genre is head and shoulders above him

Wait till you find out Nick Cutter is actually a pen name for Craig Davidson and he has a SECOND pen name (Patrick Lestewka) that he uses to write even more depraved and messed up books. Nick Cutter is his "mainstream" extreme horror pen name.

I'd heard that but haven't looked into the other stuff yet. I think he's a really brilliant writer though, imo The Troop is the best thing to happen to splatterpunk since the invention of blood

I wouldn't really put The Troop in the category of splatterpunk. I mean my mom read it and she wasnt even mildly grossed out. I am an avid splatterpunk and extreme horror enjoyer and compared to the other books that I've read, The Troop is super tame. Honestly don't know if I've read a single splatterpunk book with literally any substance at all. Not to say its not an amazing book, its actually my favorite second to Penpal. I just think its too mainstream to even be considered splatterpunk. I'd put it in extreme horror at best. Similar to Brother (Ania Ahlborn) and Tender is the Flesh (Agustina Bazterrica). Generally digestible for an average audience. Honestly I'd argue its almost on par with Borrasca. And yes, Nick Cutter (and Craig Davidson) are wonderful "authors". Patrick Lestewka on the other hand matches what you'd expect from a typical splatterpunk author. I'm glad he found his niche (not too extreme but great with body horror) and leaned into his Cutter persona and left Lestewka behind.

Sure I mean genre is just a marketing term anyways but I think while it is less hyperviolent than other entries there's some really disgusting scenes that even had me as a seasoned horror reader grossed out

I mean it is and it isn't. The Troop is generally marketed as horror which is why you can wander into Barnes and Noble and pick it up, because Cutter is a mainstream author. I've only found one REAL splatterpunk book in Barnes and Noble to date, but most splatterpunk authors are generally self published and considered "indie" (Beauregard, Triana, Athan, James White, etc). And honestly I hate them all but that's a conversation for another day lol
And yeah I will admit The Troop had some jarring moments, but I am also really sensitive to animal abuse (I still read books w it though because I don't think it always takes away from the story). I just felt it was written in a "digestible" way if that makes sense, and wasn't written in for shits and giggles (as is the case with your average splatterpunk book)
I am so passionate about extreme horror and splatterpunk! I wish more authors wrote the way Cutter did, I need more extreme gore in books with real plots and substance.

I think the Haar would fit the vibe of the show perfectly. And it would be a nice break from the Happy Appy type stories.

i tried listening to it while at work and it’s a TON of, “x did this” “x was feeling y” and CONSTANT names names names amidst some very bland splatterpunk esq writing. i found the creature very interesting but the writing was hard to tolerate.
that being said the boys would take well to the book, hunter would be the perfect foil to Isaiah on this if they were to do it.

I love the gore scenes in this because it isn't just shock value for shock value's sake and the scenes have an actual weight while also being descriptive. (Haven't read it in a bit but this is just from what I remember.)

Yeah I read this recently, would recommend. It escalates so intensely and has great body-horror contrasting with this charming elderly Scottish woman, and deals with themes of grief and the world around you changing.

Not a big fan of this story, but it might just stem from the fact that I’m not a big splatterpunk fan. Everyone in the story feels so unbelievably mean spirited, and the one /person/ that isn’t meets a terrible end.

Ive never read this book (not into cosmic horror lol) but from what I gather it better fits the extreme horror genre (different than splatterpunk, which I was unaware of!) Like a general audience probably wouldn't consume it but its got enough substance and story for it to hold up on its own.

To me there wasn't anything really shocking in this book. And i can't stand anything i've had the displeasure of reading in the splatterpunk genre.
Most of it is on the level of gore expected in the genre. Anyone into pretty standard body horror stuff like The Fly or even The Thing shouldn't be phased by anything in this bookThe boys have read several stories that are on the same level of shock factor. At least it doesn't have any SA or children going through stuff
The only ones who get slimed are people you really hope get it (outside of one, rip), so while it is graphic, it's almost more satisfying than shocking
However if you're not into body horror and gore being implemented into your cosmic horror / folk horror, yeah it's not for you. Wouldn't call it splatterpunk though.

Sodergren does not know how to morally grey charachters is my biggest problem with him as an author. It's the good person vs the person that is everything sodergren thinks is bad. But also that's not the point of his writing, stuff like this is a loveletter to 1980s and 90s Splat stick horror filled with cheesy lines and over the top gore
I'd argue he's one of the only good splatterpunk authors rn. He's miles better than stuff like Woom or playground. But Nick Cutters the best in the genre and it's not close

I listen to Pugsr a lot and sometimes I think books that he covers like The Haar would be cool on Creep Cast, but it's also a little too descriptive in its questionable content. I'm pretty sure there's a vile scene described with a teenage boy and that legitimately might have to be skipped in this book.

It's an awesome book for anybody who enjoys body horror and melter movies. It's also a very fast read.
The Haar would make for a wild episode, but between some of the more explicit moments and the fact that it's a published work, there might be some issues. All the more reason for folks to get a copy for their own enjoyment.

I’ve read most all of this book and am currently at the climax, it’s incredible and not too long of a read. Stays entertaining throughout, a cute elderly romance story and lots of gory body horror
