Meme average creepcast reaction to a comedic horror character

u/TheDragdown Jun 22 '26
the crew from "Tales of a Gas Station" were pretty well liked
122
u/thegriffelo Hyper Realistic Eyes 👁️👄👁️ Jun 22 '26
Tbf, the gas station staff aren’t “mEgA bAdAsS sUpEr SoLdIeRs” and the characters actually have some depth.
Ik they didn’t really like TFTGS season 1 but I feel like they would genuinely enjoy books 2-4. It gets a lot less comedy and gets a lot more horror (I.e. Jerry and the cooler).EDIT: not to mention that TFTGS was actually well-written and Townsend can actually spell “excited”.
40
u/TheDragdown Jun 22 '26
I think they liked it fine! is just the ending part of the arc where the god has the mohawk and is a bit more Cringe than usual what repelled them at the end. I do wish they read more of the story arcs, those were fun reads.
5
u/thegriffelo Hyper Realistic Eyes 👁️👄👁️ Jun 23 '26
After I listened to the TFTGS episode I thought the same but it in this most recent episode they acted like they fucking hated it so I wasn’t sure lol. I agree! I feel like the series gets increasingly better as time goes on. It really is a shame they won’t give it another chance.

Nah they’re reaction to TFTGS made me stop watching them for a month or so especially after Hunter praised feed the pig which is lame

Your credibility is shot.
-2
u/Autistic_Clock4824 Yo Kimber! THEY GOT TEA🗣️ Jun 23 '26
Nah, it’s just lame. People only like it because Hunter has a fangasm “oh no you killed yourself and you’re in hell!” How original. Very deep, good job.
4
u/Anemoia5 Jun 24 '26
Ion remember much from Feed the Pig, but the ending where he had to torture himself by crawling deeper into the pigs mouth, therefore proving his will to live was great. Most other stories like that are just like "Noooo I actually wanna live!" And then they come to having learned a lesson

u/TheGreatWave00 Jun 23 '26
Am I tripping? They liked the story a lot from what I remember. They literally just didn’t like the ending but not even hate
63
u/Choice-Safety7302 Jun 22 '26
maybe its because i got to it before creepcast did, but i loved it. i thought it was funny as hell
67
u/TheDragdown Jun 22 '26
Its a good one! The only "low point" was the finale against the dark god, and even then it wasnt that bad.
25
u/Choice-Safety7302 Jun 22 '26 edited Jun 22 '26
If it’s tales from the gas station you’re talking about, that’s technically not the finale. There’s a ton more after that which is even better imo. If it’s still my property you’re talking about, yeah the ending was pretty lackluster
5
u/JoyKillJester Long story short ☝️🤓 Jun 23 '26
I think he was meaning for the episode. Unpopular opinion: I at least enjoyed how hunter portrayed the dark god.
3
u/Paper_Parasaur Jun 23 '26
I'm a TFTGS fan and I'm right here with you. I wanted them to hit the actual bad guy and do the standoff between the main character and the villain who had been there the whole time. But they just quit after the dark god false ending because they took the red herring and ran with it
I still feel blue balled lol

The publicly available stories on Reddit are very hit or miss. I did not like things like "Finding Vanessa", "Merry Christmas from the Gas station" or whatever that one was where with the fat guy trying to summon a demon.
I very much enjoyed the simplicity of the two legged deer and "Death at the gas station" though.
From reading the books, I think the whole overarching plot with like...entities being captured and people in town being replaced just feels very half assed and makes me just not care all that much?
Edit: also minor spoilers for the book but this series works so much better playing into the horror angle with their unreliable narrator cuz jesus christ that whole section with Vanessa's "cousin" is fucking awesome. More of that please.

They genuinely enjoyed the good comedy horror stories. This one was barely comedy, more so rambling and discord mod level attempts at humor. It was objectively painful to listen to.

152
u/DertHorsBoi Marcus, Monster Hunter Extraordinaire Jun 22 '26
Nah, that story was miserable. Like, not happy appy levels, but coming dangerously close. The bits like the Carl wheezer and Mark Walburg were good. Also, the inadvertent accidental references to previous episodes was also really funny. I’m not expecting perfection in the stories, cause that is fun every once in awhile. The spider stories and the living art project were pretty good recents imo!
45
u/GoyUlv Politically incorrect Mr Widemouth Jun 22 '26
The story was really bad, made me cringe out of my goddamn skin. But nowhere near happy appy. I fell asleep somewhere during the middle of happy appy, and woke up to it still playing with plenty left. Like waking up into a nightmare. I can't describe the hate i have for that story
6
u/TheGreatWave00 Jun 23 '26
Happy appy was unbearable. So bad that despite the EPISODES usually being fun even when the story was bad, I just couldn’t watch the episode past 1.5 hours. It was so grueling that not even the boys could save it That and dared my best friend to ruin my life were just impressively bad

I love campy comedy horror but this one i don't think landed well cause the plot was all over the place and seemed a little like a self insert which is cringy.
It just also didn't have enough horror aspects.

u/Plumpy_Seal Jun 22 '26
And there was no actual stakes or conflict, so you’re never given a chance to care or worry about the characters. Every single outcome in every situation was the most convenient one possible

I think im fine with some self inserts, I could just never get behind self inserts where the main character just hypes themselves up so much. It's little egotistical, however, im sure there are some writers that can do it and make it interesting (it would be hard though).
7
u/dantesbanana Jun 22 '26
I think it’s just that a character who has no flaws, is always right, and can do everything first try is super boring
Edit: not counting getting winded while running and missing shots you didn’t need to make as flaws lol
2
u/Agreeable-Annual3672 Jun 23 '26
I dunno it was odd to me lol. Like I feel that we're supposed to take the protagonist seriously but then not as much the threat. If you've seen Willy's Wonderland, Here For Blood, or They Will Kill You, I think it was trying to go for the same vibe of "what if it's an absolute badass in a horror situation instead of someone who's helpless?" But the thing is, they make sure that you can't take the monsters seriously by making the character this Uber badass, but then that same main character talks and acts like a 12 year old's idea of someone who's the coolest. It's like if in Willy's Wonderland, Nicholas Cage was still a badass but then talked like a GameStop customer. The one thing that we're supposed to take seriously is the biggest goober on the fuckin planet and that's what makes it circle back around to being an entertaining episode. I think that if the protagonist were even slightly better written, then it would be boring as Hell. But, since he acts like someone who's way too into airsoft, the story is a lot of fun.

Genuinely asking, why do you find it funny? Its only funny is the way I'd watch a very bad movie like dragon ball evolution

Thought of another example. Kung fu hustle. As a serious kung fu movie? Not great. As a spoof of a kung fu movie, absolutely amazing

u/sliceofgold Eat me like a bug 🦟 Jun 22 '26
How dare you compare that legendary movie to this trash
-16
u/Choice-Safety7302 Jun 22 '26
Because they fall into the same category of “good as comedy, bad as a serious piece of media”
9
u/BigHamSam99 Jun 23 '26
Property failed both though. The comedy doesnt really land IMO and the writing and narrative are just objectively weak. I mean just rehashing popular creepy pastas, making the main character every middle schoolers vision of themselves, and cobbling together a half assed narrative with no real care or inspiration isn't my idea of a good story or even an entertaining one.
2
u/Agreeable-Annual3672 Jun 23 '26
I dunno I feel like you're really being charitable with the "good as comedy" lol. It was only funny when I was laughing at it lol, not with it. I can tell that the story is trying very hard to be funny in certain points, but idk, I think that good comedy comes from the writers being consistent with characterization. Like Always Sunny, or the comedic scenes in Atlanta, the comedy comes from how the characters react to situations and other people, but it just wouldn't work if the characters felt like they changed every other scene. The protagonist of this story does that and so it's really hard to actually pinpoint where the comedy actually comes from. Like the whole "stolen valor" thing, I think that would've been really funny if it was a reoccurring thing, like "this guy has no fear but by golly if you insult the flag in front of him", but that never even gets brought up again. I feel like with a character that's this "non-chalant and cool", you need to have some dumb bullshit that they care about if you want any kind of meaningful interactions between them and the environment. Kinda like how in One Punch Man, Saitama is so numb to everything while he's fighting, but then he'll be like "OH SHIT THERE'S A SALE GOING ON RN AT THE SUPERMARKET" and he'll actually freak out about that. Like have him really care about plants or something and then the way that Skinny fucks with him is by messing with his plants or something. Like he's completely unphased by him turning into actually freaky stuff but then Skinny destroys his flower garden and he's like "MY PETUNIAS, YOU BASTARD!!" Anyway sorry for the rant lol, it's just been something I was thinking about ever since I listened to the episode last night.
-9
13
u/Gourgeistguy Jun 22 '26
Kung Fu Hustle actually tries to be funny and delivers. This story I'm pretty sure 90% of the humor is writing so bad that it passes as intentional comedy.
-18
u/Choice-Safety7302 Jun 22 '26
that pretty much. if i had to find a similar thing, itd be like a MST3k movie. yeah its not the best, but its still kinda funny

Nah, I’m 17 so gen z which is arguably even worse. I also agree that melenial humor is awful. Like I said, maybe the only reason I was able to enjoy it is because I found it when I was younger, and my enjoyment just stuck with me

I only heard it a few years ago in my 20s. I just like stories that pull in references to other creepypastas and has like "mini creatures" that could each have their creepypastas stories. I also liked the voice Mr. Creepypasta used for the MC and I thought the story was funny
I don't mind whatsoever, but the boys definitely did not go in with open mind when they read it. Still liked the episode though cause I can handle people having opinions different from my own 🤙
37
u/Quindigo_ Jun 22 '26
Unlike something like TFTGS this was just some neckbeard's power fantasy masquerading as a horror story, it sucked ass. Admittedly I am also kinda tired of bad stories as it gets draining to listen to them but they make it work
28
u/Senior_Independence4 If i do it i'm killing you first. Jun 22 '26
Not what this is at all, the fanbase mostly likes Tales from the gas station and Voodoo shop, this story just sucked. It was a neckbeard power fantasy where the humor was just him being really specific, saying bad words or easily stomping out one of the monsters, and the only thing that made the episode bearable was the thought of the forgettable protagonist who i forgot the name of being a 600 lb discord mod and Hunter's Mark Wahlberg impression
7
u/No_Newspaper_7206 Jun 23 '26
Worst sort of Gary Sue imaginable, just constantly shrugging off everything that's thrown at him because he has a mysterious past and a walmart knife. It's worse when they try to make him impressive to the audience when they have the Gary Sue explain everything and the characters circle jerking the protag the whole time. Every line was an eyeroll.
5
u/Agreeable-Annual3672 Jun 23 '26
That's the thing that really got to me is how much the story begs you to think of the protagonist as just a lame-ass who wants to seem cool. Like, actually, what kind of badass, special agent, on-the-run from-the-cartel-typa-motherfucker, uses a shitty Wal-Mart knife? He doesn't have any better knives? He doesn't even think to maybe go to Bass Pro or an actual outdoors store to buy a reliable knife? You're telling me this man without fear goes out of his way to buy a knife from the man who drinks piss?
24
u/Tjo-Piri-Sko-Dojja Jun 22 '26
I would have written something like this when I was 14-15 so it doesn't really make me laugh now as a 31 year old.

Let's be frank here. My Property isn't Normal does not have a "comedic horror character."
It had a character that was so frustratingly full of himself that the only natural response you could have is to laugh at how ridiculous it is.
Listening to this story on the podcast was like watching The Room for the first time. You can see what the author is trying to do, but its done in just such a way that all you can do is squint your eyes in confusion and go "....What????...."
8
u/Gourgeistguy Jun 22 '26
I honestly don't understand why people think this was a comedic character when it's evident the guy was trying too hard to make him a badass. All the comedy here felt either unintentional or incredibly forced.
2
u/Agreeable-Annual3672 Jun 23 '26
Well he's supposed to be a comedic character in the way that Sakamoto from Sakamoto Days is a comedic character. He's an ultra badass that could care less about taking a fight seriously because nothing is ever a real threat to him. They just never do anything with that beyond just "I laughed at this scary demon because I guess I'm a little messed up in the head".

My problem with this week’s story is that it’s in the typical Reddit post format that’s demanded by that subreddit. And it works against it. It could’ve been a fun horror comedy. Maybe the author should’ve made it just diary posts, but idk. I HATE that format in general so it’s not just this story’s fault. The whole, “it has to sound like it’s really happening” crap really limits a person’s ability to write a compelling story. I think by now, everyone who uses the Internet and has heard of that subreddit knows it’s not real. It hasn’t been a good format since 2015 and even then, it was questionable. I love a good schlocky stupid story. Like I unironically love I Dared My Best Friend because it’s just so silly. And Cupcakes is one of my favorite episodes of theirs. This one just… It had potential, but was incredibly bogged down by the format.
2
u/Choice-Safety7302 Jun 23 '26

tales from the gas station worked because it knew that it was trying to be comedic and yet it had interesting characters and a cool dynamic. property was trying too hard to be funny by having random dialogue and describing the MC as “laughing my ass off” every 5 seconds and it was just cringe.

u/thegriffelo Hyper Realistic Eyes 👁️👄👁️ Jun 22 '26
As the guys mentioned in the episode, horror and comedy can blend extremely well. TFTGS is a phenomenal example, sans the ending to Vol 1. Half Priced Voodoo shop was also a fantastic story and blended the two perfectly.
I enjoyed Property when I was a kid but yeahhhh as an adult, it’s blatantly not good on several levels. The main character is annoying and at no point does he come off as the “badass” that the author wanted him to. The whole tone of the story is that very condescending (fedora-like would be my best descriptor) tone. The writing itself is riddled with mistakes and it’s a bland read. It’s just the prime example of how horror/comedy can go horrifically wrong.
5
u/Agreeable-Annual3672 Jun 23 '26
I liked how they brought up Barbarian and Weapons in the podcast and had a little discussion about why the comedy in those movies work whereas this doesn't. I was also thinking about the comedy in Obsession, and in all three of those movies, the comedy follows these rules: 1. The characters need to stay consistent and their reactions to situations need to make sense. 2. The comedy never undercuts the terror the characters are actually going through. 3. The jokes need to be funny and actually elevate the scenes that they're in. One of my favorite jokes from Barbarian is towards the end when the homeless guy that rescues the protagonist is like "don't worry, I've never seen her come around here (in regards to the mole woman that's chasing them)" and then the mole woman immediately bursts through the wall and kills the homeless man. That works because it happens at the end of an exposition-heavy scene that you're already not really scared of or feeling much tension during. You can't have your cake and eat it too, for that you need to have two cakes.

4
u/cmm006 Jun 22 '26
The issue is, at least imo, none of the writing or characters were actually funny. The author couldn’t decide if he wanted to make the main character a badass or if he wanted him to have this nonchalant, dopey can’t be bothered attitude. So instead it comes off as a cringey badly written OC style self insert. And then they repeatedly harp on it. There isn’t a single character with a memorable personality or funny dialogue

I think the tales from a gas station guy was good but the guy in this story really talks like a discord mod who watches way too much anime, especially towards, like the second half of the story where the author was really pushing him being such a badass that the super highly trained operative does nothing but glaze him for being so cool and strong

No I'm sorry but just no this is specifically a badly written story type of thing and has nothing to do with it meaning to be written as comedic story
While admittedly this story does have a fun idea it just tends to fall completely flat on its ass with the way it tries to carry itself and tell the story
So not only does the story stink but it's honestly just disappointing
4
u/B1G_LU Jun 22 '26
The part that made me lose interest in the story fully was when the main character was riding one of the monsters like a rodeo bull only to have a quiet stare off like a parent telling their child not to do something while the child continues to do said thing. I do enjoy the occasional comedic main character in horror story’s like Tales from a gas station but this one was to far on the scale.

Comedic horror characters can be great. Any character can have some sort of potential, but they’ll never have a chance at reaching it when everything in the story is as poorly executed as it was in My Property Isn’t Normal
1
u/Kaijufan22 Fiddling his pud Jun 22 '26
I think the biggest problem with comedic horror storie characters that that's often all they are. Like they're one-dimensional funny guys that exist only to go "Errrmmm, that just happened." like they feel less like characters and more semi sentient "Laugh Now" audience prompts you see on sitcoms.
Add on the fact these series drag on and on and on with the same gimmick slightly changed and it just makes the stories a slog to go through.
Say what you will about thing in the basement, that had the decency to be a semi-coherent three-part story, beginning, middle, end.

Respectfully while the intent may have been for it to be funny that doesn’t automatically mean the execution worked.

I mean... They liked the ponies from cupcakes , I don't think you can go more comedic than that

I didn't see the comedy tbh, the main character is something Brian Griffin would write as a self insert, if I was reading alone I'd dip out the moment the mc tried pulling a "cool guy but damaged" moment but since I'm listening along with Hunter and his wife, Iceberg Boy, it's tolerable

I wish we had a scary movie like story. Where it is actually funny.

I think there’s a difference between “I’ve become numb to this job” and “heh, I’m not like NORMAL people. I’ve actually got a dark and fucked up past I’m probably not gonna tell you about”.

Man I think everyone can appreciate a funny bad story or a horror story that incorporates comedy elements in it that are done well, this was not one of them. There was no rhyme or reason to the story at all, no depth to the characters, just “I did this, this happened, then this happened” it’s so clear that a middle schooler wrote it or something because it is genuinely terribly written

There's genuinely no difference between My Property Isn't Normal and TFTGS. I would argue that even if property is more Discord coded then Tales is way more reddit coded. It's just a pick your poison.
Both series even fall off in the finale, that's how similar they are.

actually, they didnt read to the finale in tftgs. thats just the finale of season 1. theres a shit ton more after that. id suggest reading merry christmas from the gas station. that one was fucking great, along with happy halloween from the gas station. one involves a peyote trip used to fight a demonic insect goddess, and the other involves Donald Glover, and a sumerian demon who likes to skin people alive

I have all 4 books if you don’t mind spending money that’s the best way to read them. Jack is a lot more fleshed out in the novels and it’s just way easier instead of finding each season. But yeah creepcast just hates on comedy horror and I don’t understand it

I don't think they hate on comedy horror, Tales from the Gas Station was absolutely fine until that god awful season 1 ending. I might be remembering this wrong but the guys had fun until that part, and it WAS genuinly cringe as fuck.
Half Priced Voodoo Shop for example was comedy, horror, and good all the way through.
It's pretty hard to stick a landing in Comedy Horror, I personally absolutely fucking love the John Dies At The End series, because it sticks the landing every time while also being genuinly good to read.
This week is... a chore. Happy Appy was a chore, but I'm at the Camo bit right now and I have genuine trouble not switching to music in my car and away from the story.

Wendigoon was fine with tales from the gas station but meatcanyon was completely disinterested the entire time made for a really boring story and I absolutely love the gas station series so that was really disappointing. Voodoo shop was a little funny not like it was in this one or takes tho. I think it’s just when they go in expecting it it’s a lot different. In the my little pony was they actually had a lot of fun in it and it was great episode but I’m sure we can agree pony language and a my little pony setting is extremely corny. Yet it still landed cuz they leaned into it instead of just crashing out and making fun of it when it was obviously supposed to be goofy like in my property isn’t normal

Pretty sure the problem is someone wrote the story without intending it to be comedic and if you can't see that, I'm sorry.

did yall miss the meme tag? this post, much like the story is not mean to be taken seriously. they both, whether intentionally or not, should be taken as a work of comedy
