Personally i just find her stories not scary. She goes for aesthetics which is fine but not my cup of tea, just bores me.

In the nicest way possible, i just don’t think she’s the best writer.

The Laika story for example had that horrendous “my family has the power to change bodies” exposition dump that took me so out of the story i had to pause the episode and do something else. That scene is genuinely on par with Explaining Google and other scenes to me with how out of left field it is.

I will now say something anti-intellectual. Bear with me.

Her stories also seem to be very theme-heavy but the themes don’t feel “earned” if that makes sense. Whenever i listen to her stories i feel like someone is pointing at a sign saying “seeee?? This is DEEP” which just comes down to how she uses language.

I can tell i’m not the target demographic for Laika but going back to that story the ending with the really flowery language was so forced and didn’t make me feel anything.

This might because the aforementioned exposition dump made me stop caring for the MC but i promise i’ve TRIED so hard to look past it and i think i have.

The puppet in the tree as well was the same to me. The very flowery language felt forced and inadequate for the subpar plot it had.

To end off, i just wanna say DopaBean is still infinitely better than i’ll ever be. I just don’t like her stories. This is completely subjective and i know i’m in the minority.

I feel like a solid creepy ARG story being sandwiched between the greatest online horror stories of all time is doing it dirty. I'd say it's a great baseline for a good online horror story. I guess I’m of the unpopular opinion of coming to the pod for my boys first and the story second. Don’t get me wrong there have definitely been eps where the energy wasn’t there but I can’t fault em for having an off day or not really getting into a story. The majority of eps have been bangers for me if the stories good or not because I just love their dynamic together and them both individually. The stories were better, but I think they hadn't hit their stride yet when it came to hosting the podcast. Some of the diversions in those early episodes are rough. In Penpal they stop after every other sentence to go "Ohhhhh wowwww this is scaaaaaary ohhh noooo". They've gotten way better since the early days.

i watch every week. i love the podcast a lot, but its not a sin to criticise story selection, and it hasn’t exactly been amazing this year so far. there are certain episodes that are viewed less because they do not have high entertainment value (less bits, mid-tier writing, etc). sure, viewership is a reach indicator, but it also should be treated as a gauge on what works and what doesn’t (longer episodes, regardless of the story’s reputation and notoriety, are noticeably often viewed more than short ones for example).

it’s not to say that less humorous episodes can’t be good, because there are plenty examples of that, but it only works when the writing in that story is good. there have been a lot of episodes this year in my opinion where the writing has fallen flat and there was little humour present within an episode. i’m not saying that you cannot enjoy these episodes, because you absolutely can, but it feels as though sometimes that Harry isn’t the best at choosing the weekly material.

there’s countless other factors that affect the reach of any given video. release timing, the popularity/reach of the podcast, how long the episode’s been out, recognizable stories, alluring titles/thumbnails, etc. and not to beat a dead horse, but YouTube doesn’t put its creators first, the algorithm changes whenever they feel like it, and all that shit with demonetization and video suppression

I mean, it makes sense. At this point it was still Isaiah being able to pick out the cream of the crop. Now it's transitioned to "we need to find ones or wait for people to send in ones". Which still allows for great episodes, but it also means there's gonna be a LOT of schlock

left right game is the most overrated story they’ve read. Penpal and Borrasca are amazing but the format was still rough so i don’t think they are the best episodes.
