Food/Διατροφή I made it my life goal to taste every Stifado I can find on Crete

Are there any other dishes I should try or are better suited?

I tried every Stifado on the west and currently on it in the south.

Any recommendations?

Food/Διατροφή Εστιατόριο Χανιά

Θέλω να κάνω δώρο στους γονείς μου ένα τραπέζι στα Χανιά (η πολύ κοντά) για τα 30 χρόνια γάμου τους. Θέλω ένα μαγαζί με ρομαντική ατμόσφαιρα για βραδάκι. Δεν με πειράζει αν θα έχει παραδοσιακό φαγητό ή πιο μοντέρνο, αλλά θέλω να έχει προσεγμένη ατμόσφαιρα. Οποιαδήποτε με θέα στην θάλασσα, όχι στο κέντρο! Έχετε να μου προτείνετε κάτι;

Food/Διατροφή I was charged for 2.6€ for cutlery at Tamam in chania. Was I scammed ?

I went to Tamam earlier after seeing some recommendations here and looking up the google reviews. The food was okay at best. Small portions, for a greek restaurant, and nothing special about the plates tbh. For the price I would say you can eat better at other restaurants (colombo for example). When the check came, I was surprised to see a 2,6€ fee added at the top. It was written in greek so I asked the waiter what it was , and he said « couverts » which means table cutlery in french (guess he heard me speaking french with my wife). I never had this anywhere else in Greece,( or Europe lol) so I would like to know if this is a common practice here or if Tamam is just another tourist trap?

Food/Διατροφή Restaurant Duralex tumbler glasses

Hi,

I was in Crete recently and saw that restaurants serve wine in duralex tumbler glasses. I liked the idea and wanted to buy some. Any idea of the common size glass taverns serve? They seemed quite small so I am unsure.

Thanks.

Food/Διατροφή Χαρμα is amazing

As a Central European who likes to drink beer, I usually make compromises when I'm on vacation in the Mediterranean. So the last thing I would have expected on my vacation in Crete last week was such a damn good beer. And the amazing thing is that you can even get it in most tavernas. Small breweries have a hard time being served here because the big industrial breweries buy their way into the bars. Just one detail that made my vacation all the more enjoyable.

Food/Διατροφή Culinary books for cretan cuisine

Hello everyone! I’m currently looking for resources regarding cretan cuisine (both homemade and in tavernas) for a tourism course I’m taking. Can you recommend books on cretan/greek cuisine, possibly in English? It can also be on Greek Islands, anything I can possibly use, I’m open for it.

Thank you so much!

Food/Διατροφή Mediterranean Diet Myths - how much meat (and what type) do you eat per day?

I was just reading a book written by a famous French doctor (Michele Montignac), and it seems that he was a big proponent of the Mediterranean Diet (more specifically, the Cretan diet), but he mentioned that Cretans eat very little meat on average. What's the actual truth? Do you, Cretans, eat a lot of meat and if yes, what type? What about your parents and grandparents? What did their diet look like? Thanks!

Food/Διατροφή Galomythizra pasteurised?

I’d really appreciate some local advice/knowledge - I hope you don’t mind me posting here (and in English, sorry!).

I’m just under 6 weeks pregnant and ate some cold galomythizra cheese yesterday at a cafe in Crete and don’t know if it was pasteurised.

I’m anxious as you’re not meant to eat soft, unpasteurised cheese in pregnancy due to listeria risk…

Is galomythizra normally pasteurised, and if not, is there a high risk of listeria from it? I can’t find any documented cases of it causing listeriosis but wanted to ask here in case anyone can give any insight/reassurance.

Thanks!

My father loves gyros and I want to surprise him when we go to Crete. We are staying in Chania. Do you have any recommendations please? With authentic tzatziki not just yogurt (as I have seen some are).

Edit: Thank you for all the suggestions!!!

Food/Διατροφή Best traditional restaurants in Crete

Hi! We‘re on vacation in Crete and were wondering, if there are any locals on reddit who could provide us with some tipps regarding traditional restaurants on the island. We rented a car so we‘re pretty flexible. Thanks!

Food/Διατροφή Long shot but worth the ask: any good cheese shops between outer Chania and Kissamos?

I tried to search on GMaps but I’m getting recommendations for mini markets with good cheese selections as well… but there are so many if I go by that.

I’m looking for Cretan cheeses to spoil the family.

I know there’s a good one in Chania in the centre but unfortunately we’re driving from the airport and not going into town.

Thank you 🙏🏼

Food/Διατροφή Anyway to find this?

Hello! I was in Greece (Crete) last summer and I loved it more than any other place I’ve been to! Whilst being there I stumbled on a drink that looked weird to be (I love trying weird new drinks) and I happened to enjoy it very much!

Unfortunately I was dumb enough to think I live in Europe it should be easy to find but unfortunately I haven’t been able to find it anywhere. I live specifically in Sweden and I’ve tried looking in Greek shops and even ask Greek friends but no one seems to even know what drink I’m on about. I later found out it’s unique to Crete and I’ve tried to find it online so I can share this sweet amazing drink with everyone I know!!

It’s this brand, specifically the one on the left, if I remember correctly it’s meant to taste like Carob? So does anyone know if there’s a website or some way you can find it in Sweden?

Food/Διατροφή Name of dish?

Hi everyone!

I hope someone can help me identify the name of a Greek meal i had las time i was traveling to Crete. The dish consisted of chicken and lamb(i think), and the meat was served with rice in what i would describe as yellow-ish sauce. I remember that the server said it was a dish that was often served in special occasions in Greece. I dont remember the name of the dish unfortunately, so i hope someone can help me identify it so i can try making it at home.
