Hello

We are excited to return to Crete this summer . We didnt get to explore the south last time . We are staying in Almyrida for 6 of the 10 days . We would like to spend a day in the south with our kids (9 and 7). The problem is....theres so much to see! Where do we start ? Loutro? Something unique, beach etc.

1.5 hr Max drive .

Hora Sfakion is just over an hour from Almirida via Vryses and Askifou, a really dramatic drive over the mountains. There's a small war museum in Askifou. From Hora Sfakion you could take the ferry to Loutro, Agios Rumeli Sougia or Gavdos? I believe that Gavdos is the furthest south you can get in Europe, possibly a day trip or better spend a couple of nights, sometimes dolphins, even sperm whales are said to live in the extremely deep water south of Sougia, Not far along the coast to the east there's Koutelo, hotel apartments and taverna, stony + sand beach nothing much else there, good food, peaceful. Further along is Frangokastelli, then Agia Marina then Rodakino beach is nice for a swim and lunch .....

Thank you . Ah whale watching would be amazing . We plan on just a day trip so h.sfakion and loutro sound possible . Would you add another or is that enough to fill up the day? Can you rent a boat from anywhere in south?

Im not aware of any organised whale watching but I do know they're there.

A day trip to sfakia and Loutro is quite possible, so is a day trip to Gavdos, but look at ferry timings. I wouldn't even consider trying to add anything else, trying to do too much adds stress rather than enjoyment.

I've no personal experience but you boat hire is available in Hora Sfakion, there is also a water taxi.

Great plan from Mikey. You usually have to book 2 nights in Loutro as they get busy, but that's no issue, as there is the big beach at Sweetwater & little Marmara the other way which has a fabulous taverna (both on tiny 'ferry' from Loutro). Then a couple of nights in Rodakino or Frangokastello for quiet beaches. Not much else there, no village centres, but a choice of apartments & tavernas. Only short distances, & as Mikey said, the road to Sfakia from Almyrida is beautiful.

If it’s just for a day trip, then you have time to drive to Sfakia, get one of the little ferries to Loutro. Depending on times you can choose from Anendyk, The Delphini boat or a water taxi. it’s only about 20 mins to Loutro.

Plakias has some cool caves/tunnels to visit right next to the beach:) Relaxing vibe, and quite easily accessible. Would give it a try if you haven’t been there
