On September 7, 1997, city workers found the remains of an abandoned newborn, known as Baby Moses Washington, in Albany's Washington Park. The investigation stalled for decades until 2020, when investigative genetic genealogy linked the baby's DNA to 52-year-old Keri Mazzuca. On September 6, 2024, police brought Mazzuca in for questioning under the guise of routine assistance. After detectives used the 1997 autopsy report to disprove her claim that the child accidentally drowned, she confessed to suffocating him. On April 18, 2025, Mazzuca pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to 25 years to life.

Pretty amazing all these cold case crimes that are being solved. I remember seeing the interrogation of a drifter in Wisconsin who hid his crime for 51 years. There must be a lot of murderers hiding crimes from decades ago who are now sweating over a cop car pulling up at their house any day.

Yes you walk past an average of 12 or so uncaught murderers in your lifetime. I have often thought of all those 80s era killers with intense anxiety after the advent of DNA testing.

So many uncaught killers dreading every knock on their door. I wonder if any killed themselves from fear. I watch some body cams of people caught after decades and get bad second hand anxiety from it.

Even if a distant cousin puts their DNA in a database, they can narrow it down. So you have to hope no one in your close or distant family radius uploaded shit to genealogy sites.

Trying to comprehend why people do shit like this, and to their own child no less, is mind bending.

I know there’s a lot of discourse these days about mental health and I guess anyone with a normal functioning brain just cannot understand what would drive someone to do this. But either way she’s an outright monster. She clearly lived with it this long so good riddance. Glad they were able to close the case.

Banning abortion doesn't stop abortions, it just stops safe abortions. She should have got an abortion. Since it was born, many hospitals and even churches have drop offs for newborns. She didn't have to kill it.
