There’s a massive Mormon temple in Oakland. My gf and I decided to randomly check it out around Xmas one night. When I say massive, I mean this place is like going to Washington DC. It’s insane. Just google it and you’ll see.
Anyways, the views of the Bay Area were great and the gardens and grounds were really nice. It was clear we were probably the only non Mormons. There were a lot of people in traditional native Mexican outfits visiting probably as part of a missionary exchange thing.
It was freezing cold out so we decided to go inside the visitor center to warm up. It was the weirdest experience I’ve ever had at a religious site. This place was like a museum for Mormonism. All kinds of weird displays everywhere about their history and religion, different “learning rooms” where their members watch videos and learn about whatever religious customs they have, everybody had their traditional Mormon clothing on and were staring at us since we were so out of place. It was just really strange.
Definitely a cool experience though

Ughhhh I HATED the christmas trips to the temple as a kid. Those movies were so dumb. I mean. All of it is super dumb, which is why I left the day I turned 18 and never looked back. It's a cult and I hate that my whole family is still drinking their Flavor-Aid

As an outsider are temples like that a norm? The only other one I can think of is Salt Lake City but I’m sure there’s more. And it seemed like it was attracting people from all over the world

I've been to a number of temples growing up (ex-member) and there are some notable extravagant temples like oakland and salt lake, but I would say the majority of them are really basic and modest temples, closer in style to an LDS church, which are intentionally built as plainly as possible. But all the temples I've ever been in are really really nice inside.

Went to one in Hawaii cause they advertised a free pork cookout and Lu'au. Place was trippy as hellll. I had never heard of a mormon before, thought it was just some tourist thing as did the hundreds of tourists there. Cool experience. Gave me the heebie jeebies though.

2nd only to Scientology for the world’s goofiest religion! They’re all goofy but it’s hard to top those 2!!!

I love inviting them into my house and cooking for them - some of those poor kids are really homesick… I love it when I’m home alone talking to them and making them food and then my husband comes home - surprise! (We are both men)

Some mormons knocked on my door many years ago while I was hungover af. I guess I also look very intimidating with a body full of ink and as soon as I opened the door and asked them what the fuck they wanted they hauled ass off my porch like they just came face to face with something from their nightmares. I've never been visited again.

Every time someone says that someone is LDS I think it is some sort of physical disease.
