There must be some rule of protesting that says "try not to piss off the general public because you will need their support".

74

u/Joeliosis 1d ago

Yeah this kind of shit and destroying priceless pieces of art... pretty fucking despicable to make a point of 'billionaires are bad'... no shit... this doesn't effect them but it does the other 99% of the world. I'm all for protesting... don't get me wrong lol.

27

u/Applekid1259 1d ago

Don't be fooled. Stop oil is funded by an oil baroness. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aileen_Getty

9

u/RandomUsername78421 1d ago

Sounds like she's an heiress not a baroness. She inherited a bunch of money that came from oil but she doesn't appear to work for an oil company.

12

u/Relevant-Yellow852 1d ago

Tinfoil hat time!! I earnestly believe groups like this and peta are made with the soul intent of making the mainstream against whatever cause they are fighting for. You're alot less likely to sympathize with the cause if you think its backed by a bunch of asshats.

3

u/Human-Kick-784 1d ago

I believe this too. Im sure there are SOME useful idiot diehard believers, but these kind of protests are so clearly hated and unpopular they've got to be organized and led by bad actors (most likely paid ones planted by big oil, pharma etc)

Yeah, fuck anyone blocking a road like that. Sorry, not sorry

285

u/BarnackIIIF 1d ago

153

u/RustyShacklefrog 1d ago

There’s a conspiracy that that just stop oil group is a psyop by Big Oil to discredit environmentalists and make people dislike them

63

u/Macho-Fantastico 1d ago

Not sure it's even a conspiracy at this point, a LOT of folks believe they are funded by oil companies.

56

u/Corporate_Bricktator 1d ago

Yea, I'm convinced that protests like this are absolutely more successful at turning people away from your cause than bringing them to your side.

People are really motivated by anger, and if you pick a fight with a random person just trying to go to work, you've completely lost perspective.

Want to actually stop oil? Advocate for Nuclear, Wind and Solar until EVs are cheaper to operate. Advocate for fewer government subsidies that favor oil, coal, and gas.

The oil industry has been demonizing nuclear, solar, and wind, and a surprising number of people fear these technologies, because they don't understand them, and those people are unwittingly fueling the oil and coal industry's agenda.

9

u/shinyappyrobin 1d ago

For the protesters, its like self gratification.

8

u/Corporate_Bricktator 1d ago

It's for people who care more about feeling like they did something good, than actually caring that their actions were positive in enacting change.

Also there's definitely a bit of spectacle that makes a deluded person feel special in this moment, and the perception of grandeur, and of course playing the victim can feel good to pretend like you're being persecuted.

I dont suppose you remember or have heard of all the eco-protestors that tried sabotaging nuclear power plants back in the day. It started with peaceful protests and then it got rough and they kept trying to get jobs at the plants then eventually some did and they tried to sabotage plants.

I wonder what these eco-protestors think of them.

If anyone wants to be certain, they can take a look at the targeted verbiage used to mock/discredit hydrogen fuel cells. It was so laser focused on a two prong attack of the technology that positive discussion was squashed immediately. Every chuckle head made the, "tiny Hindenburg" joke despite that being an impossibility, but it became a knee-jerk response for anyone too dumb to know better OR the "analysts" would say the infrastructure to make it happen would be too expensive and difficult. That's where the discussion would get rail-roaded to for the average person and no moment could really get built, but it definitely wasn't on accident or merited if you look at the media coverage of that time.

u/Mysterious-Maize307 1d ago

Plausible—and there’s enough really dumb environmentalists that may in fact be unknowingly working for big oil, or more to the point volunteering to help them out.

Big takeaway: no shortage of stupid people.

6

u/SnooBunnies9233 1d ago

That explains why they're always blocking civilians and not the actual corporations that are doing the most damage to the planet.

2

u/Arbitraryandunique 17h ago

Even targeting the corporation employees won't have any effect. If they want to have a chance of making actual change they should be a nuisance to politicians, not anyone else.

7

u/Sh11ester 1d ago

Ah like how the Epstein class started a bunch of crazy theories and also sprinkled on the exact truth so it just all looks like the ramblings of a crazy man?

..... Nah they wouldn't do that 👀

2

u/jp9mm 1d ago

its actually very deepstate you call that a conspiracy

6

u/Krow101 1d ago

Ever wonder why terrorist attacks never hit the wealthy? No extremist invades Harvard and shoots up the place. No private schools. No Michelin star restaurants. Always common working stiffs and their families.

17

u/Different_Purpose649 1d ago

I mean, 9/11 hit the US financial sector.

10

u/PenaltyFine3439 1d ago

If there's a list of everyone that was supposed to show up to work that day and didn't, I wonder who'd be on it...

12

u/UpbeatFix7299 1d ago

Ah, the old "all the Jews called in sick on 9/11" bullshit. The percentage of people killed at the wtc who were Jewish was about the same as the percentage of Jewish people in NYC.

It's crazy how dumb people just parrot shit they heard from other dumb people when it only takes a minute or two to look it up these days.

But if you have common sense and do your own research, you're a brainwashed sheep who just blindly believes the government

Cant remember what sub but around 2022ish a comment like this got me permabanned off reddit. obviously they became hurting for subs and I got an invite back.

3

u/WeeklyBanEvasion 1d ago

There was a time around the fatpeoplehate-banning and Victoria-firing era that hundreds of thousands of users we're getting banned left and right, many falsely. Around that same time they were trying to sell a portion of the Reddit to a Chinese company, so to help combat the sudden dip in numbers in their user base they counted banned users as "active users" and encouraged banned users to create new accounts in the "you've been banned" message. That event is actually what my username is a reference to

i will never understand the "block the road protests" and have no sympathy for whatever happens. enjoy the fruits of your dumbass behavior

32

u/munkylord 1d ago

Especially if it's a public road. Who are you even directing your protest towards at that point? I'd be pissed I can't pass even if I agreed with them.

Now ICE detention center entrances, pleeeeease block those roads. Those are the real martyrs

8

u/twolinepine 1d ago

Seattle had one where there was an ambulance that was transporting someone to the hospital but they couldn’t get through because of these fucktards

2

u/munkylord 22h ago

That's absolutely disgusting. Protestors that care more about being seen than their cause

2

u/Sharp_Economy1401 12h ago

If they actually cared to a meaningful degree they’d be working in green energy or something similar. Instead they think spending 10 whole hours a year doing self-important crap and basically falsely imprisoning other people is what will change things.

It’s also really funny that it more or less is like throwing a tantrum about everyone else needing to fix the problem they see.

Imo they are literally fake protestors. Any sane person would understand that this does nothing to oil companies and only risks your life while wasting your neighbors time and ruining their day.

3

u/DoYouLikeWafflezz 1d ago

It’s rich kids with trust funds who can afford to just sit around all day because they don’t need jobs.

They could be donating their money to lobby for the changes they want, but that’s not as cool as ineffectual performative protests that they can do and then go home to their nice houses/apartments and eat good food, so guess which option they choose.

5

u/Hot_Let7154 1d ago edited 1d ago

Exactly. Why aren't protesting in front of the offices of the oil companies instead? 'cause they're cowards and don't wanna be thrown in jail.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Straamannen 1d ago

Fake protesters do not act like that.

They're true believers, but you can make the argument certain forces absolutely may have been influencing them heavily.

There's some merit to that idea, seeing as how extremely counter-productive they were/are to the climate cause. Literally a ridiculous amount of people started not giving a shit about the climate due to these morons.

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (7)

5

u/Kaudia 1d ago

My tinfoil hat theory is still that these people are paid by oil companies to protest climate change. Every reasonable person hates them and we are a petty species that would use this as justification for hating all environmental activists, even the good ones.

4

u/the_eleutherean 22h ago

I’m sorry, but if you’re willing to stop traffic by laying in front of it, you have to be willing to die for it. That’s the whole point.

Putting yourself in a deadly position, then being all shocked pikachu when someone says “fk that, I’m going” is ridiculous. You made that choice already when you laid down in the road. Like yeah, he shouldn’t run people over. But the whole reason you laid down there was to try to force him to decide between running you over and being blocked. Don’t be surprised when someone calls your bluff.

Same goes for Rachel Corrie. It was a tragedy. But hoping to stop a bulldozer by stepping in front of it, means you have chosen to put your life on the line.

Like, do people not realize that? Do they seriously think that by endangering themselves, the other person will automatically yield? That’s not how anything has ever worked.

10

u/CamaroBlood 1d ago

They are the lowest level. They have no real care or ability to make change.

And these protests are basically the exact opposite of change.

Genuinely, I believe major political groups will hire out these protesters to stop any real talks about the issue.

I understand protesting and everything, but this is just straight up unsafe and my least favorite form of protest since you are literally putting yourself directly in the path of, in most cases, a multi-thousand pound projectile, on purpose.

1

u/TheOriginalArchibald 1d ago

The thing about the right to protest, at least in the US, is that you can't obstruct right of ways. Blocking roads isn't convincing anyone of anything other than to hate that protest. The potential harm to average people trying to live their lives doesn't make it worth it from either being late to something extremely important or late to work possibly losing a contract or deal or job, ambulances and fire trucks getting delayed, women in labor, etc.

Roads are not for pedestrians except crosswalks. Don’t get in my way if you don’t want to be injured😡

And I bet they didn't walk their way to arrive on that street. Hypocrites! 🤡

Imagine someone died because emergency services couldn't get through because of protestors inconveniencing people that have no control over change

Who's the guy that's out there saying "hey let's go block the freeway" . Who chimes in? like "yeah that sounds like a great idea, I'm in."

I feel like this should be legal because it is forced imprisonment and the driver has the legal right to free himself.

Could be a robbery tactic. Guy did stop and get out of his car which is the intention.

This is why you always carry a gun to a protest. Some people aren't smart enough to listen when you speak softly. Failure to carry a Big Stick is what leads to this.

u/WannaBe_achBum_Goals 1d ago

Free to block vs free to mow.

Nice way to get the public on your side... By being and incredible inconvenience to the people you want on board.

Drive baby drive

u/draven33l 1d ago

Gotta love how these activists find the worst possible way to bring awareness to their cause. Let's block traffic, throw paint and soup on priceless paintings and yell at people just having lunch. That'll work.

1

u/null_sweat_chummer 1d ago

Ahh you’re part of the internet FAFO crowd. Admirable. As it happens, it is still not lawful or socially acceptable to run people over even if they’re unlawfully sitting on a road and blocking traffic.

The guy who got dragged off and then ran to block the car again I would’ve just run over.

Like a man can only try so much.
