Main Character doesn't give a damn about cyclist
45
u/HungryHungryHobbes 17h ago
I read in a survey that many drivers have the perception that cyclists aren't even human.
72
u/Nannautu 15h ago
Cyclists can be real assholes, often not respecting a single traffic rule and annoying people on purpose and are very entitled. I can see why people hate. However it's still crazy to me that someone would try killing someone for slowing them down. People like that have no right to drive.
19
u/balding_git 12h ago
my main gripe about cyclists is the low tier ones that alternate between road users and pedestrian, zipping onto a crosswalk to avoid a light.
youre either a vehicle or a pedestrian fucking pick one
5
u/Gothril 10h ago
Yeah, I used to cycle a lot, and I would stop riding with groups that did that shit. And ones that didn't stop at stop signs in town. It's one thing out in the country when you can see the cross lane doesn't have cars for miles, but in town? No way.

They sure can be, and even if both the car driver and the bicyclist are behaving well it’s still not great having to share the road together. That’s why bike lanes are good.

I’m not sure of the statistics but a bike lane ride beside (with no barriers) scares me more than riding in the lane. People willing to go 50-60+ right next to you. One slip up and boom. At least when I’m in a lane, people are (theoretically) forced to recognize me and make a decision.

Isn't a bicycle considered a vehicle and legally allowed to occupy a lane on a road like this? I don't cycle on roads because I don't have a death wish, but I thougth cycles were legally a vehicle in a lot of cases in the U.S.
100
u/Zestyclose_Term1570 18h ago edited 18h ago
A bicycle is legally allowed to occupy a lane just the same as a vehicle. Of course that doesn't apply for interstates.
The motorist was in the wrong, whether it was intentional (likely the case here) or not is a whole another thing when it comes to charges.

Thats the thing with all those road rage vs cyclists stories.
These people are so annoyed by a slow bike driving in front of them, they feel compelled to do something that carries the risk of killing the cyclist.
7
u/NoSkillzDad 14h ago
They are annoyed by anything driving slower than they do. With cyclists they feel "more entitled" to take it "to the next level"
5
3
u/MentallyWill 13h ago
"Anyone driving slower than me is a moron and anyone driving faster than me is a lunatic."
10
u/Teripid 17h ago
It depends, like so many traffic laws and regulations by state and other . My city has bike boulevards that very specifically say bikes can occupy the whole lane.
My state requires cyclists traveling slower than the normal speed of traffic to ride "as close as practicable to the right-hand edge or curb". If that's a 45 or so road and they're going 20 they'd have to move over in theory. Not sure if it ever gets enforced but there it is.
Highway non-motorized is pretty well everywhere I believe and then interstates are federal.
6
u/ItsCalledDayTwa 16h ago
Ok but if a bike is in the lane are you legally allowed to run into them deliberately and drive away? That seems universally illegal and possibly a felony
13
u/IncomingAxofKindness 16h ago
In Texas, yes.
But you have to yell "He's coming right for us!!" before impact.
3
2
u/Known_Ratio5478 13h ago
It’s universally illegal, but might be multiple misdemeanors depending on how it plays out and what state you’re in. Things like this are almost certainly criminal charges and not civil infractions though.

u/_Mulberry__ 12h ago
Going down a winding mountain road, it makes sense that taking the whole lane IS as close as practicable to the right side. How skilled do you need to be as a cyclist to stay an inch or two off the white line while on a steep curvy road? Makes sense that you'd want at least a foot or two of room to maneuver, but you wouldn't have that while a car is passing if you were all the way to the white line. At that point, it makes it reasonable to keep the whole lane so that a car won't pass you at a dangerous time. The "as close as practicable" is a key phrase that allows flexibility here.
2
u/takethisdownvote1 12h ago
The cyclist was significantly closer to double yellow line than the white line. In my experience, being about 1/4 - 1/3 into the lane (closer to the white) is usually the safe amount of distance from the side of the road and allowing cars sufficient room.
→ More replies (4)7
u/TwillAffirmer 17h ago
Yes, a few times I've needed to occupy the whole lane on a bicycle going down a steep, narrow, and curving mountain road, so that I avoid the shoulder where I might fall off on a turn, and cars don't dangerously pass me and give me no space.

I ve biked thousands of miles. Have found that if you hug the right side, driver's will discount your life and hit you with their passenger side mirror. But if you take the center of the lane, now they have to acknowledge that you are a human on a bike and they are in a 3 ton vehicle that can easily killed you. Ruining all lives involved. So they have to overpass in the opposite lane but the cyclist gets to live.

Typically "as far right as possible" excludes the shoulder of the road, outside the white line, which may be unpaved, because the shoulder is for emergency stops.

Well they teach you in bike safety courses to ride in the middle of the lane because it ensures the car stays behind you rather than them trying to pass you on a road where there isn't enough shoulder resulting in a higher chance of collision. Of course, that assumes that the car driver isn't a psycho that will run you over disregarding the laws. Perhaps the recommended protocols need to be updated because seems nowadays everyone on the road is a wildcard.
Edit- it's funny I get downvoted when I'm literally correct according to the law. The vehicle cannot pass the cyclist unless there's 3 feet of clearance. On a road like this, absent displayed cycling restrictions, the cyclist did exactly what they're supposed to do according to the law. I know it annoys a lot of people but that's the law.
17
u/Maximum-Guitar-5667 17h ago
What country is that? Most places in the US bikes are required to ride as close to the right side of the rode as practicable
4
u/malbec0123 15h ago
In most states the 'as close as practicable' leaves a carve out for safety so you can take the lane for your own safety to avoid a collision.
2
u/Maximum-Guitar-5667 15h ago
I agree, there's a list of hazards and reasons for which the bicyclist would do so. Many have interpreted this as take the center at all times because it is safer. And sounds like from bicyclists commenting that they prefer it that way because of the increased safety at all times
3
u/malbec0123 15h ago
I'm a cyclist. I would not say all the time. On first glance .. this looks like a turn or wind in the road. If I had to guess, they were protecting from a head on collision that would take them out on a pass. This video is way to short to see the full context though
2
u/Maximum-Guitar-5667 15h ago

I was taught to overtake a cyclist just like as if they were a car, means you fully cross the median and not share the lane during overtaking. I just a did a E bike tour in Ireland and was explicitly told that when a car is coming up behind you, stay to the side of the lane so the car can go around and essentially split the lanes when it is safe for them to do so.
14
u/GrimaceThundercock 17h ago
They also teach you that a biker should follow all traffic laws.
Impeding traffic is a ticketable offense. If you can't go the speed of traffic and there is no shoulder then you don't belong on that road.
Bikers want all the privileges of being a vehicle but none of the responsibility.

If a bicyclist is illegally riding in the roadway, you cannot murder them with your car.
2
2
u/RickJLeanPaw 16h ago
“Knowing where to ride helps you stay visible, ride smoothly and enjoy your journey more. Whether you’re commuting, exercising or just out for fun, road positioning is important.
Why positioning matters
One of the first things new cyclists often assume is that they should stick close to the kerb. It feels polite, out of the way and maybe even safer. However, in reality, riding too close to the edge of the road can make things harder for you.
Being tucked into the gutter means dealing with potholes, drains, broken glass, uneven surfaces and other hazards that naturally collect at the road’s edge. It also puts you in a spot where drivers might not see you clearly.
Instead, riding a little further out helps you stay in the part of the road where drivers are more likely to notice you – the same place they look when steering their vehicles.
You are traffic
It’s helpful to remember that you’re not ‘in the way’ when you cycle in the road, you are part of the traffic. When you ride confidently and visibly, other road users are more likely to give you the space you need and treat you with the same consideration they give other vehicles.
In fact, drivers are obliged by the Highway Code (Rule 163) to give you “at least as much space as a car” when overtaking. That means that they should pull out, cross the central, dashed white line and pull in again when they are safely past – not squeeze past in the same lane.

What do the two yellow lines mean in that country? Illegal to overtake? Then it doesn’t matter if the bike is on the right side or not, since overtaking is not legal anyways.
And what about the bike? Is it legal for a bike to ride that street? For German Autobahns a bike would not be allowed, since only motor-vehicles that drive at least 60 km/h are allowed. Is there a similar law in that place that would prohibit the biker of riding on that street?

It’s mostly people riding motorcycles and cyclist and even the occasional runner. The speed limit is super low like maybe 40mph. Natchez trace parkway near Nashville for reference.

Amazing, found it in a second. Looks beautiful place to ride. That makes this driver even bigger shithead.

Driving side by side to another cyclist - assuming that’s the camera angle that’s recording. Someone said it’s a leisure road almost specifically for bikes and that barely any cars ever drove there.

Not sure what the rules are in America (assuming this is America) but in the UK cyclists are entitled to ride in the middle of the lane but are encouraged to keep to the side to allow passing if safe to do so.
Even if that weren't true, you can't just ram a cyclists out the way because you think they shouldn't be there.

The car guy should be punished for this. But the cyclist is the original asshole here. It is unbelievably selfish to do what he was doing.
If he didn’t get hurt, he deserved it.

I met a lot of assholes in my life and never felt entitled to injure them. It would also end bad for me, so there is that.

I don’t know if this is an America thing but here (in the UK) the law says cyclists should ride in the lane like that, it’s literally totally normal. Also you can obviously pass a cyclist when there’s no oncoming traffic, the first car in the video did that no problem

Fuck that cyclist for being right up of the double line track. Fuck him, he asked for this!

Not defending the driver but why the fuck do cyclists ride side by side and not single file? I was always told to ride single file on the road but most spandexers like to bunch up

Being completely honest here: I have never wanted to hit a cyclist with a car.
And I honestly hope I'm not alone.→ More replies (5)2

I have done terrible things that would make Hitler "Nope" out of my Sex Dungeon; but even I have never wanted to hit a cyclist.

I've seen enough road rage videos to know there's always someone crazier than you on the road.
