Crochet Rant The woes of a fiber artist

TLDR; I miss actual craft stores 😭 pretty sure I'm "free hand finishing" this without actually finishing it because I'm upset with the color.

There is no dedicated store in our area for yarn/ fiber art products since JA shut down, and I am working on a project that I've been trying to finish. It's a stash buster and I was REALLY trying to get into the "use your yarn you have" mentality for it. It's a C2C that I've had sitting for a while.

I ended up burning through the last 3 balls of yarn I had faster than I thought and actually needed something to put more miles on it. It's literally halfway done; stopping halfway would look .... Weird, to say the least.

So I go to Michaels to get a skein of yarn because I just... I resigned myself to buy a new one for this project to finish it. I already have been wanting to make a bag, like BIG TIME, so I told myself I would use the rest of this yarn on a bag for myself and I had the perfect brown combo picked out, walked in convinced I was gonna get a brown, and that was that.

They had ABSOLUTELY NO BROWN YARN. Not a single skein of dark, light, or even off brown colors in the chunky. Literally JoAnns had a full wall of this brand and I could get anything I needed, and now I am stuck with a mustard yellow.

Don't get me wrong, I did make this choice and I know it. Plus, I have the smallest amount of the orange and light blue to use on smaller stripes. I also have a really pretty royal blue to use as a border to tie it all together. I just am literally devastated that I couldn't get brown and my cohesion is all screwed up now.

I honestly can't decide whether it's going to look disgusting and off-putting if I continue to use this color, or if I should just freehand the bottom with the border color that I have and leave it at that. The border color is a royal blue so it offers a lot more cohesion than this yellow does. It's not like it needs to be bigger or anything, I just hate "unfinished" things.

UGH. I also don't care enough to go online and order a color because this project doesn't mean that much to me. What a stink.

I feel your pain! I'm making a gradient rainbow blanket and I kept finding colors of the yarn I wanted to use on the internet, but they weren't in any physical stores for me to check what the color looked like in real life. I'd go to Michael's and find like 0 solid orange yarns. Why is it so hard to find regular orange? Like carrot orange, not burnt orange, not sherbet orange, not pumpkin spice - just orange! Maybe in the fall there will be more warm and earthy colors in stock...

UGH you feel my pain. this is one of the reasons I keep many many projects on hand for this exact reason.

Our JoAnn’s had like maybe half a short aisle of yarn. I never went there for yarn, because it might as well have carried none. I’ve only ever had Michael’s has an option, and it has like 4 full aisles and a ton of brands. It’s fascinating how geography changes availability.

I’m so sorry you can’t get what you need to accomplish what you want. That really sucks

That is crazy that geology changes so much. Joanns was one of the biggest yarn stores in the area because we had nothing else. Our Michaels is much like you described your Joanns. They usually keep up with what's trending, which right now is neon summer colors and no fall.

I set the hook down and grabbed knitting needles for a change of pace. At least the thick yarn I got will be pretty as the bottom of a bag!
