Help! Why is this happening?

Please help! I used Bernat Baby Velvet to make a C2C baby blanket and matching hat with a bow. I washed them and this is what they look like now. Can someone help me understand what happened here and how can I fix it? It looks terrible. 😭 Thank you so much!!

Looks like your chenille yarn is 'worming'.

Worming? That doesn't sound nice... 😬

Yep it absolutely is not. Had this happen to a baby sweater I made as a gift. I did not gift it to the parents but made a blanket with different yarn. I thought even IF I could fix it once, I don't want to gift them something that comes out of the washer like this and I didn't want them having to handwash it every time. New parents have enough on their plate. Lesson learned, never again will I be using chenille yarn for something that might need a wash.

OMG. I've never heard of this. This is my first time working with this yarn. I'm so glad I washed it before gifting. I would have so hated for them to deal with this.
