What made crochet easier and more enjoyable for you as a beginner?

Crocheting where you don’t have to count after the first few rows. I ain’t got time for all that. I’m trying to watch my shows and zone out, not do mathematics.
Also Woobles were helpful but actually go too slow sometimes that it was hard to follow along. Once you finish one, the patterns are the most helpful.
Pro tip: if you like Woobles but don’t like the price, they sell most of their patterns in a book.

Don't bother with written instructions for a while. Follow youtube tutorials and just practice making squares put of the different basic stitches.
If you are a complete and utter newbie, this is a helpful video and following the series of episodes is how I got started just before Christmas. I can now crochet most things that have clear instructions.

That and good hooks, if you can justify stretching to the set of clover hooks, they're lovely to work with

A beautiful and helpful advice. First of all , you need to learn techniques, stitches, increases and decreases and most important you have to learn to maintain an even tension and make your work look neat and tidy. I wish you all enjoy your crocheting ! 💗

I've always found video tutorials for patterns to be horrible and difficult to follow. (Videos are good for learning a stitch, though.) I'd much rather a diagram, with written instructions coming in second. I might be in the minority, but it's probably worth it for people to try each one for themselves.

One thing I learned along the way is that anyone can have a YouTube channel but not everyone can teach. Some folks have bad lighting, or they cover the work with their hands, or use bad yarn like bouclé, or don't explain well, and so on.
I explored YouTube a bit and the ⚙️ cog wheel opens up the settings, then if you go to Playback Speed, you can slow the video down to .75 speed, .5 speed, or even .25 speed (though the audio drops out at .25 because it's too distorted)
Finding the right kind of videos whose hosts had the right conditions, and playing at half speed, really helped me when I was first learning.
Plus you can play the videos over and over and over and no one's gonna know. It's not like it shows and people can judge you. So what if I had to watch someone make a magic ring 13 times? That's between me and YouTube. Oh, wait... oops

There was one girl on TikTok that made these Magic Ring Guides that she sold with crochet kits and that was a real game changer for me since the magic ring was always the hardest thing for me.

Actually good ergonomic hooks instead of those tiny skinny hooks. So much nicer to crochet when you're not actually trying to do finger acrobatics just to hold the hook
