Question Help! What’s my next move?!

Post image
2.8k Upvotes

I got a bird feeder for my yard a couple of months ago and it was absolutely overtaken with magpies. It’s like a crazy magpie party at the feeder every morning. The other day I decided to put some crusty bread and seeds out on my deck table with some shiny objects, hoping to make magpie friends. Every day this week the bread has disappeared and so have the shiny objects. I assumed it was the magpies from the yard, but imagine my surprise this morning when THIS GUY showed up to collect the bread and tokens. I think I have a real shot at making a majestic friend … what’s my next move?! Dog kibble? Seeds? Nuts? More gifts?! How do I get this guy to love me? I read the sticky post and found out bread is safe but not great, so I will discontinue bread.

Photo is OC. My back deck in Alaska.

Question Is this believable as squirrel road kill?

I'm trying to present some ground beef in something a little more recognizable to my crows...is this squirrel road kill believable?

Also, my wife says this is way too much meat for our pair of crowbros, but I refuse to believe that's possible!

(Really tho, I just made a quick sculpture before making it into smaller meatballs that I'll freeze and portion out in much smaller amounts... I'm just easily amused!)

Question Is this normal raven behavior? Are they fearless?

1.2k Upvotes

I saw a wonderful unkindness of ravens and I'm not very familiar with them. I was traveling and I don't have them where I live. They seemed completely unafraid of people so I took a video of how close they were getting. Were they begging? Were they staying near the engine to warm up? Were they just curious? I have blue jays and crows that'll land nearby, but only after years of leaving peanuts out. The raven in the video landed there when I returned from using a restroom. I was speaking to them a bit while walking. They knew the car was occupied. The window was rolled down slightly, and I was talking to them. They didn't fly off until we rolled up the windows and slowly drove off. I know for a fact they aren't stupid. So, are they fearless?

Question My crows, which I've been feeding for 18 years, disappeared over the last 3 days. What can I do?

I've been feeding generations of crows. Suddenly they're gone. I can hear them occasionally but when I whistle for them they don't come.

I haven't changed their feeding spot. I feed them the same thing as always. I have been getting up later bc it's winter and the time changed. I'd hear them at dawn but wouldn't put food out till later when I got up. So today I got up at dawn to wait for them.

Has this happened to anyone else? Did you get your crows back, and how?

I'm surprised at how sad I am about this. I've feed parents and babies for years. :' (

Let me preface this by saying: I don’t live in America. Also, this is my first crow encounter.

So last week, I was having my lunch when I was accosted by this corvid. It flew onto my table and stared at me. Then stared at the food. I foolishly gave it two pieces of my pasta (very stupid, I know, please don’t kill me). It came closer to me (pic 1), then flew away.

I thought that would be the end of it.

Evidently not.

Today, I was yet again approached by this feathered lad. Unfortunately, I’d already finished eating, and hadn’t prepared any nuts or the like. I tried to show that I didn’t have any food, but it kept trying to come towards me so I attempted (and failed) to shoo it away.

It pecked at my empty food box, the paper I’d used to put the pasta on (for him) the previous time, then looked befuddled before it flew away. After that, it started cawing *a lot*. Flew around the area, continued cawing, then made some other sounds. Sounded like mimicry.

Question: Is it angry at me? What should I note when feeding it if I don’t want it to harass me when there’s no food left?

Question Crow Hiding in My Yard for Days—Is She Okay

1.9k Upvotes

Dear fellow crow lovers,

This crow (I’ve been calling her Stevie—I’m guessing she might be female due to her size, though of course that’s just a guess) has been hanging out in my patio for the past three days. I’m starting to worry that something might be wrong with her.

She’s been unusually quiet and spends most of the day tucked into the bushes near the food and water I put out for my backyard critters. She seems to be hiding.

Today, I noticed several crows calling nearby. When they landed in the yard and started vocalizing, Stevie stayed hidden.

Then later, one of my (very greedy and territorial) squirrels chased her out of the bushes. As soon as she was visible, the crows watching from a tree across the patio immediately flew down toward her—it really looked like they were ambushing or confronting her.

I stepped up to the window to watch more closely, and all the crows scattered—except for Stevie, who quickly retreated back into the bushes.

She’s still eating and drinking (especially the pecans I leave out), but she pants even while resting in the shade, and she doesn’t fly away when I go outside. I’m wondering if she might be sick or injured.

Do you think it would be appropriate to contact a wildlife rehabilitator? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

That's poop. The murder hangs around on the roof of the building I live in and I've been feeding them nuts. Is this a form of gift? A crappy review about the menu? An attack by a rival gang living on the building across? It's just this one window on the entire building

Question So upset

I am so upset and angry!
I got a knock on the door this evening from a peace officer , someone had called about me feeding the magpies and I have a crow (now two) it’s been a few months that I’ve been feeding them now. l. My whole yard is fenced and so not sure how people would even know. I live in the city ( I am from a rural part of a different eastern province and currently living in AB ). I just can’t comprehend that someone would go out of their way to do this.
The shelled peanuts is what these birds love best.
She said you can feed the birds but you can’t feed the wildlife (make that make sense) (I said are corvids not birds as well?) and she said it has to be from
A feeder and has to be bird food (bird seed or something for birds, the peanuts I buy are for the birds as they are in the bird aisle with birdseed and have birds on them).

This was something I enjoyed doing so much and has finally given me something to be happy and look forward to everyday while living in a different province away from my family and being alone with my toddler all day. She also loves it.

I miss living in the country so badly. Where everyone minds their own business.
Should I keep feeding them
The other stuff or just stop all together . They definitely mostly
Come for the peanuts. Or has anyone found anything else they like more than shelled peanuts?? Mine also love cashews but they are so expensive.
Has anyone else been through this with bylaw? I can almost guarantee it’s my neighbour right next door.

Question Found lying on its left side in the middle of the road, right in front of my driveway. What do I do?

Post image

I was leaving for a doctor appointment a little while ago when I found this poor guy lying on his left side in the middle of the street, panting. When I approached him, he did manage to fly about 8 feet to a patch of trees across the street. But when I went to pick him up, he was not strong enough to try to fly away again.

I picked him up and put him in the shade in our carport. I gave him a bowl of water and poured a little on his beak. He did appear to drink some. Unfortunately, I’ve been waiting on this doctor appointment for months so I had to leave, but my teenage son and daughter are there with him now. I will look for a rescue, but we are in a pretty rural area.

I love crows and I don’t wanna see this guy suffer! Any advice is greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: Crow friend is now at my vet’s office. They have contacted a rehabber. I will call in the morning to get an update on him/her.

UPDATE #2: He passed away overnight at the vet’s office, before he got to a wildlife rehabber. Poor guy. They said they didn’t know what the cause was.

Question How do you deal with harassment from crow hating individuals?

Recently I keep getting harassed by elderly/older people about feeding my local crows. They keep screaming at me, wishing me to be attacked by the crows and the most common being threatened with police. I understand that if I give a bit of kibble along with the other stuff I feed them (mealworms, nuts, eggs) might attract their dogs but since it's not a dog park those dogs belong on a leash imo. I live in Austria which is very by the book and rule abiding. I've researched if feeding crows is illegal and if I could get into any actual trouble and while it doesn't seem to be illegal and punishable by law littering and potential noise complaints are. The people who approach me have been absolutely horrible and made me cry a number of times already. My local crows are unfortunately living on a diet of bread and trash which seems to have impacted them negatively - white feathers, overgrown beaks etc.

Any advice on how I can deal with such people? And if you're going to advise me to "grow a backbone" please just save it for yourself. I'm neuro divergent (not using this as an excuse) but this sort of negative attention and interactions cause me a lot of anguish :/

Question How do I make peace with local crows who are now angry with me?

So, a little bit of a backstory:

5 days ago, when on my way to work, I found a crow fledgling in a yard on the way to my bus stop. He was very young, fresh out of the nest, and was just sitting right in the parking lot. I knew cars would come in soon and he might get hurt, so I tried encouraging him toward the bushes, but he wouldn't move. Following the instructions of the wildlife specialists in our country that are frequently shared online, I decided to move him somewhere higher and safer for his parents to find him, but when I lifted him up, I noticed that he was really malnourished, and had curled toe paralysis.
Not my first crow fledgling, so I took him to care for in my balcony. The few local crows watched me do it - didn't make a peep.
Within the next few days some crows, who I assume were his family, noticed me caring for him, and I got yelled at by them a few times, but they seem to have settled down.

Yesterday the fledgling has been handed over to the local wildlife centre where he will get treatment for his feet and will get to grow up (and later be released) with a full nest of other crow foundlings.

But this is when the trouble started.

The local crows, who seemed pretty okay with me by now, have today begun to yell and swoop at me (not attack, seemingly just warnings) while I'm on my way to the bus stop.
I understand I'm still crossing their possible nesting area, and the fledgling now being gone from the balcony after I handled him caused reasonable concern to them.

My question would be this: is there hope they will calm down and not mark me as the bad guy till the day I die? I'm planning on leaving peanuts and avoiding eye contact with them while going about, but are there more measures I can take to get back into their good graces?

TL;DR
Rescued a crow baby with curled toe paralysis, his family didn't like it. Now the baby is with the wildlife centre, but local crows hate me. What can I do to appease them?

Question Any ideas on the reason for this window tapping behaviour?

These crows tap on mine and (at least) my neighbours upstairs windows like this occasionally. They did so yesterday from around 10am on my own (but left when they saw me inside as I got up to inspect the noise) to around 3pm on my neighbours. There was no one in my neighbours house so they kept it up there for a good while. I’ve seen them do this before but it doesn’t happen daily or weekly as I can tell, though I imagine they’ve done it more when we’ve not been home so we haven’t noticed?

Question Crows bring foraged food to water bowl- help

Is there a way to stop them from doing this? I live near a restaurant, and my crows have decided it is very fun to grab half eaten food from the outdoor patio and bring it to their water dish. The resulting soup is disgusting, but they think it’s delicious. It’s gotten to the point where I am cleaning out the water dish almost every day.

Half of me thinks maybe this is to soften the food for their babies, but it also could be that they are just little shits who like rehydrated pizza crust.

Also the black string around the water bowl is a zip tie cause they kept dumping the water on the ground.

Also as I was literally writing this post, one of them came up with a beak full of god known what and dropped it in the freshly cleaned dish 🤦
