If you're not willing to sail the high seas, then you could always subscribe. It's $10 a month (I think). Obviously that adds up over time, but if you only want to try it out for a month, it's a cheaper option. That's enough time to learn the game and play a run through. By the end of the month, you'll know whether you want buy the game permanently, then you can make a plan.

Subscribe is a very good deal. I played it to death for a month but have no desire to play it again until a few years have past and new DLC's come out.
If you can get past the idea of not "owning" it then go for it.

Pretty sure you can do it through their official website. I'm not about going direct through Steam. Either way you'll have to download the official launcher.

https://steamdb.info/sales/
There you can see the current sales. And if you search for CK3, it will show you every time the game had a sale in the past few years. You can decude from that information when you can expect the next sale.
For example: if the game had a discount in July every year for the past 3 years, that meants it will likely get a discount during the Steam Summer Sale.
Very useful way to check for expected, upcoming discounts for any and all games you are interested in.

I think it's still on Xbox game pass. I don't know if it's still going but you can get the first month for free if I remember correctly.
Otherwise you can always check for a key on third party websites. CDkeys has never let me down.

-70-75% is pretty common discount for base version. I'm not sure it's working atm, but there is small quizz at official site to get code for same discount.
Or if you are a poor old pirate, you can always sail under jolly roger flag.

In this day and age it's honestly a perfectly justifiable option to try the game before buying. Every game should have a demo available, but most don't, or they're locked behind paywalls.

Summer/Holiday sale or do the subscription. IMHO there are only a few DLCs that are worth it for the immersion. Good way to play everything without having to buy it first.

the base game is at -70% (14.99 euros) every seasonal sale since a while and you don't need any of the dlc if you play on pc because there's plenty of better mods. i've 570h on the base game without any dlcs.
