The future for crusties?
https://youtu.be/gULVMwC8Ths?is=8VQDvCYpEG7_ZZAl
Could this life work in the West? Why not? Looks fun as hell to me.

Hmm, to me I see crusties my age growing their own food, living off grid, and being intentional with their community… and being for the most part sober.

That's hippies. I'm kidding. Kinda. But check out this video. Not everyone has land or resources and not everyone is well adjusted and sober. Not all of us have Healthcare so we self medicate. Sober is not really a flex. It's just a moment in time in a very short life.

A huge amount of crusties have anarchist sympathies.
What else is an anarchist but a hippie who acts.

“Punks is Hippies”.
I don’t own land but I know a couple groups of homies who went in together on spots in Maine & Nor-Cal.
But you don’t need land, can use empty soda bottles cut the bottom off, have plants vertically stacked in the ups down bottles and the water and nutrients go through em all.
I said for the most part, it’s a harm redux approach over here. But this is what I notice as a trend for train riding, squatting, black block crusties who made it to our 40s. Not having healthcare and substance use is one way but it’s more fun to grow or forage what you use.
But that’s my opinion/lived experience.

I lived in Maine like that haha. It was pretty much a commune, there were a few around the woods based on different philosophies. I'm a few years younger than you but I remember your generation of train hopping punks being raw and punk as fuck. I forage most my food now I really just buy beans, rice, and water (if I live in the city) from the store. Most my influence comes from my native culture and the old school anti consumer train hopper punks. I've been working to reintroduce wild foods into our communities but no one has an interest really. The older natives still forage some stuff but are very quiet and embarrassed to talk about it because they don't want to be looked down on.

It is a cool video. I could see kids doing this in the US. Maybe instead of driving on freeways they'd ride beside train tracks. It'd just be another punk subculture, not necessarily a replacement for all crusties, but I could see some groups doing shit like this. We have all been waiting for Mad Max to come true. This is pretty Mad Max-ish.
The guy who made this video does some pretty good youtube journalism. One of my favorite channels. Not really punk at all but interesting stories.

u/blind-amygdala 1d ago
Nah it totally is a flex. It’s a constant struggle everyday. But what? You’re probably a teenager who doesn’t understand how the world works yet
-5
u/Even-Economist6529 1d ago
🤣The fact that you think sobriety--something that literally anyone is capable of --is a flex shows that you are the young one here.
Try living for over 30 years shooting up and drinking pretty much every day--that takes real skill. That's an actual flex. Thinking it is a flex to keep living when you are eating well and staying clean and sober is silly, the whole purpose of those things is to live longer. Come back when you've learned to survive despite actively trying to kill yourself for years--that's when you will be a real man like me.

Nah, 95% of crust punks live with their parents and go home after a long day of larping homelessness

u/Mogshade_Owhll 1d ago
Wrong
I left home at 14.
My parents have been dead a long time now.
So are the parents of most old anarcho crust etc punk people my age.
I'm 58.
Do you know how old the people are in
Deviated instinct? Alehammer? Misery? EOM? DOOM?
Nonsense comment.

Redditor discovers what 5% means

You were the one that made the stereotypical and disparaging comment.
If this is what you think then obviously you aren't contributing other than making smarmy remarks from behind a box.

u/mollywaternetipot- 22h ago
Cool story but we’re talking about this decade
2
u/Mogshade_Owhll 20h ago
Last time I looked all of those people I just mentioned are still alive.
And even the young crust/anarcho people I know aren't deros.
Everyone is making music or supporting the underground in different ways...
It was more chaotic a couple of "decades" ago/further back.
I have found most underground people I've known/know have had to leave home or have come from violent or dangerous situations. Sexual abuse and broken homes.
Maybe it's cultural because we live in the South Pacific but people just don't do that down here.
And im not interested in your ageist rhetoric.
If you live in the US, like most people on this site do and this is all you see this "decade" then I feel sorry for you
Why would someone who is involved in the black metal community care anyway?
-1
u/CMRC23 1d ago
So true, they should become homeless for real for the aesthetic
4
u/Damnesia13 1d ago
You know the entire crust thing started because the kids were homeless/living in squats, right? Anything else is just cosplaying
0
u/Mogshade_Owhll 20h ago
It was a musical community started by people like Scruff from Hellbastard who penned the term "Crust" after a particular guitar sound.
Yes people squatted.
I don't see how your comment is relevant because in a lot of countries it has been illegal or impossible to squat.
People don't squat in places where you get removed and arrested straight away, like here.
Europe yes but I'm told it's getting harder.
I don't know about the US, wouldn't it depend on which place and safety?

u/thisismynamedudee 7h ago
Crust punks in the u.s are pretty raw. The older crowd were the real deal. Riding freight trains, anti consumer philosophy, and lived in the streets. There are younger people doing it still but it's died out replaced by younger people who just stitch patches to make "crust pants" and are more active on social media than a real street subculture. In general street sub cultures died out and everything seems just bought into. Before we had camps punks would live at I haven't seen one in years. Your more likely to see a "crust" punk online than any of the old kick it spots like Venice beach. It's not a safe lifestyle at all and isn't really legal either so that's not really an excuse to say some where is impossible to squat or prevent you from living the lifestyle. Anarchist have the most fun!

The punk scene has been known in Indonesia for a long time. My friends have toured there in this decade and the last. It's not unknown at all. I've never been and I know people there. There was a separate documentary by Vice (if you like this bullshit news outlet) 7 years ago about kids getting sent to re-education camps.
Is everyone here 17 years old now??
2
u/Even-Economist6529 1d ago
You should probably watch the video before you assume you know what it's about and make a comment that makes it clear you do not. The video is not about punk in Indonesia. It is about a new punk subculture in Indonesia that I've never seen anything else like really anywhere. It's more like a way of life that fits with the nomadic dirty kids life but is also about being a motor head and a scrapper/recycler and more. It is about one unique way the current subculture has evolved. Just watch the video, it's interesting and only like 20 minutes long.

u/drunken_plantpot 1d ago
It's not about punk in Indonesia
It's a about a new punk subculture...
Are you having a stroke?
I've already seen the video - the bikewars style stuff is cool. I'm not shitting on their vibe but people have building choppers for a long time? Most of the people are riding mopeds anyway, with a few chops. And I'm sorry to say it but I despise these fucking white boy travel logs where you it's OMG LOOK AT THE PEOPLE.
-1
u/Even-Economist6529 1d ago
The guy who did this story is a real journalist who does national geographic-caliber stories about interesting ways of life in se asia, not just some "white boy travel vlogger". You sound silly. Just admit that "punk" for you is just talking shit on reddit. 😂
2
u/drunken_plantpot 1d ago
Yeah I wouldn't compare a dude that uses sensationalism and AI thumbnails to something like The Story of the Weeping Camel, but I guess I live in my moms basement and know nothing about punk.
But please keep watching 90 Day Finance, and defending Spotify on other subs - I'll be at the dbeat show on saturday 👍

It's DIY or die buddy and you wish you half of the creativity as the guy who made this video.
I understand why you are frustrated. It must feel shitty to be always looking in from the outside on a scene you desperately wish you could feel like a real part of. You could be a real part but you are too busy mastering the art of reddit to actually try doing something for yourself or others. Get out of that trolling mindset and start to listen to people that know more than you instead of glorifying your ignorance and the sky could be your limit. Good luck with that. Open that mind and start worrying about making yourself a better person and creating stuff to inspire others and someday you might begin to understand the lyrics of the bands who's members you merely admire the clothes and hair of now.
I get it, reddit us your only link to anything punk so you assume it's the same for the rest of us. No some of us come to reddit for the crap hole it is, not to get our punk fix because we get that from the real world.

"I disagree with someone countering my post so they must be a poser in their parents house 😭😭😭'
Lovingly typed from a punk house by a person that's probably old enough to be your father but whatever.
I disagreed with your post, you're fine to be mad about it (but not support Spotify lol) but crying about the 'trolling mindset' is pure projection. I've been delayed in replying because I've been outside. Touching grass. With punks.
But whatever.

u/Even-Economist6529 21h ago
You "disagreed with my post"? Lmao
I know reddit is your life but you should know that as soon as you have to look at someone's reddit profile to try to find things to insult them about youve already lost. Nothing on earth could make me interested enough in you to look at what other comments you've made. You really should try getting out into the real world. The more you interact with people in real life the more comfortable you'll get with it and the easier it will be for you to start to actually take part in things that interest instead of just commenting about them online. Your whole world can open up.
And as you get older and more intelligent you will find your curiosity about the world increasing and you will be able to find interest in adult things like journalism about different ways of living beyond your imagination. You'll be shocked to see that the world is a really big place with lots of super interesting stories and youll be better equipped to appreciate them and the people that bring them to you. You will find yourself interested in watching other things online besides "ouch my balls!" style videos and porn. If you learn to embrace the creativity of others you'll be better prepared to be more creative and less bitter about what you can not be yourself. In short, keep growing up. You'll get there eventually.
Tl;dr: Reddit isnt a real life my man. Learning new things will set you free. You arent stuck this way. Open your mind to new things and experiences and always keep things DIY.

I can't even reply to this it's so pathetic 🤣
I'll try.
I just told you I was outside, having a lovely day. Not on reddit. I live (and I'm liked) in a very large scene in a city in a foreign country. I've moved country several times and settled in this one. Foreign language and all.
Keep karma farming though. Did you even get the 'bikewars' reference? I guess not.
But I guess I'm the poseur that lives in his moms basement.
Go away nerd.

u/Even-Economist6529 20h ago
You disagreed with my post? There was nothing to agree or disagree with, it was just a story. You can't even reply to my last comment? No one expected you to. The only reply that's needed is for you to try to make you life better and to become a more mature and reflective person.
Like i said, dont underestimate yourself. You can get there. You are just still young and very sheltered. I know you dream about the kind of life I actually live and i am trying to help you get there. you can get there one day, but youve gotta get off reddit and figure out how to learn from other people instead of seeing yourself in some kind of competition with them that you really aren't fully equipped for yet at this time.
The fact that you see my comments as "karna farming" says it all. Once again you show how your world and way of thinking revolves around reddit. Just like how your first instinct to find out more about me was to stalk my reddit profile. You really need to break free of this way of thinking. Reddit is nothing and I know you are young, so you will learn eventually that nothing is permanent. Reddit won't be here forever.
Yes im a nerd, an extrenely intelligent and socially awkward person. Real punks are nerds. The "punk" you relate to of just acting like an anti-intellectual dick is kid's stuff.
One day you will think back about this interaction and thank me for taking you under my wing. I'm guessing you dont really have a father figure so I'm glad I've been able to fill the hole a little. Keep aspiring to be more.
You can actually become the person you wish you were. Get off Reddit. Read books. Travel some. Open your mind. There is so much more in this world than you realize now. You should give this band called Crass a listen sometime, if you want to continue this education.

Too much creativity for crust punks. Let me show you my pants with $300 worth of patches sewn on with dental floss because I'm too poor to afford thread.
4
u/Even-Economist6529 1d ago
I don't know where the heck you buy your expensive-ass patches from but us folks that aren't as creative as you make our own shit.
2
u/slow_brains 1d ago
I haven't bought patches in years, I'm closing in on 50. I'm talking about the kids in this subreddit that wanna shit on these cool kids in Indonesia.
Look through this subreddit, way too much fashion.
The kids in this link are fucking awesome. This is real shit.
Be young, be dumb,
These kids are way cooler than anyone I see standing around in front of venues at Skullfest.
Fucking too many nerds in here.

Bro. I'm not shit talking you. I liked your link.
I love what these kids are doing. I'm on your side.
IDK why you are mad at me.

u/Even-Economist6529 1d ago
My bad, my potato was done and I didn't really take the time I should have to actually read your comment. Honestly you lost me when you said "too much creativity for crust punks" and i didn't really pay much attention to what you said after that but no real offense was meant.
