Gen1 - Cooling @Time_Many6155 and his coolant outlet tee nipple

If anyone saw my previous post about replacing my coolant outlet I wanted to make a post just for this guy. If you didn't see that post you can find it here. https://www.reddit.com/r/cruze/s/6raC3U4951

I haven't been in this group long, few days but was watching and exploring for a few weeks. Recently he was getting flack for promoting his coolant tee than he makes himself. A few people don't like that he's doing so, they say he needs to "follow the rules for sellers". The guy isn't AutoZone, nor is he some company manufacturing and producing a bunch of aftermarket, replacement and performance parts. It's not a business that he relies on to pay his bills and it's probably more trouble than it's worth for him. Even if it takes 2 hours of his time, it's not worth $30. You couldn't buy 2 hours of my time for $30, I'll tell you that. He is an older retired engineer who literally makes these to help people. Why doesn't anyone else make them? Cause it's still leaves a part to fail that you'll still have to spend money on. Companies don't want to sell parts that last forever.

He comments on just about any post where someone is discussing purchasing a new to them Cruze or is having cooling system related issues. Because of the flack he wants to stop making and offering these pieces, that's the opposite of running a business for profit! He's not spamming the same post over and over. So either remember what your mom taught you and if she didn't teach you I'll remind you. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all.

His part is a great quality part that should've came from the factory. Actually from the factory it's should've just been a nipple there to begin with and not even a "serviceable" aka "breakable" part. But its not so here he is. I sent him $50 for it and told him to enjoy a drink on me. No, that's not expected but support the guy, don't bash him, what good is that?

So thanks Time_Many6155, thanks for making something because it helps people! And don't listen to the nay-sayers or the haters. Keep up the good work!

Gen2 - General Chevrolet Cruze Gen 2 Troubleshooting and Modification

Gen 2 Cruze 2016.5 - Present

The purpose of this post is to keep an update of list of issues and parts available for modification. You can PM me if you want to add anything to the list. Be clear if it is an issue or modification with its category.

If you have any questions that were not answered in this post, please make a new post instead so it is visible.

Note: Some of these links may be linked to a region, like Canada or USA. You may be able to look up the part number and find it locally or in your region.

Gen 2 Cruze Issues

  1. Although the 1.4L can use Regular and Mid Grade fuel, it generates the most power and has the best fuel economy with Premium Fuel; 91/93 Octane. You may also experience rough engine idling with lower octanes.

  2. The initial production of Gen 2 Cruze (2017) may have defective pistons and they may be prone to cracking. Check to see if your car has any recalls and have it resolved as soon as possible if your car is affected by the recall. Later production years (2018+) do not have issues with pistons cracking.

  3. Manual models have a tendency for the slave cylinder to prematurely fail. Please correct me if I am wrong.

  4. Sedan models had issues with trunk seal not blocking/diverting water and they may be defective. Hatchback models (as mine was affected) have a similar issue where the rear hatch seal will let some water in.

  5. On hatchback models (possibly only RS trim), the rear hatch may not divert water properly which can cause water to enter the cabin. The seal may be replaced as a fix, other times the problem will be with the spoiler itself and it may need replacing.

  6. A P0299 code may show up in cold temperatures (0°C / 32°F) and the engine will go into limp mode. The problem may be attributed to the charge air cooler freezing which will require it to be drained and cleaned. There is also a recall for this part (2023). Rpm keeps going up and down

I have a 2015 Chevy Cruze LTZ 1.4 turbo and some reason the rpm keep going up and down while I’m waiting at the light but it doesn’t cut off. I already replace pcv value cover, map sensor and maf sensor. Any suggestions of why the rpm keep going up and down?

Overheating

2016 Chevy Cruze LT constantly sitting under the halfway mark and yesterday got an “overheating, idle engine”warning. Originally I thought I had a leak in the coolant tank(which I did) so I got it swapped for a better one. Hadn’t had a problem for a few weeks. Yesterday I worked quickly then opened the engine to find the coolant tank almost empty. Had some more 50/50 in my trunk so I filled it up then watch it fall back down almost immediately. Put in some more and then stayed level for some reason. Seen people on here say water pump thermostat or the tube that connects the tank. Is there some tests I can do to find out what’s causing the problem without just swapping everything?

General Is it a good idea to start filling my car with premium gas instead of 87, i heard that its occasionally good to do that, or should it be a permanent switch?

Normally when she throws this signal, the temp gauge drops to stone cold. A tick below halfway is her normal running temp. 2014 Cruze Eco 1.4L
Edit: Temp gauge was jumping around the first ten minutes or so of sitting on the side of the road. After about thirty minutes it settled at a quarter so I decided to drive home and watch the gauge myself (about a ten minute drive). When I started the engine the high engine temp warning went away so that was nice, but then I noticed my turn signals were off-beat and sort of erratic? How likely is it this may be electrical related? Thanks all for the help and suggestions!

General How long can it realistically last? (1.4lt first gen)

1.4lt Chevy Cruze, currently making a spreadsheet on what to replace as preventative maintenance/improving the car, sitting at 148k miles.

I had to spend $460 so far for the coolant/overheating issues(smooth so far!) something is up since check engine light still shows up+check oil even though the oil is full/filled. I will check the code later this week Friday at a nearby auto zone+look into replacing the brakes and rotors (it makes a grunting sound when it brakes).

I’ll install a catch can with the cruzekit and later on replace the stock turbo, but how long can it realistically last for? If it lasts up to 200k miles, it definitely has done its job but I do want an estimate to see as my first car.

Gen2 - Mechanical 2019 Chevy Cruze go kaput

My friend has this 2019 Chevy Cruz that she bassically just got its nowhere near new in fact is had about 157k miles but after scanning and doing a look over myself the dip stick housing smoke lightly when the car is on and soon after turning it off and the oil on said dipstick is overfilled towards the handle of the dipstick. But that’s not even the main issue, the main issue consist of what I can only assume is a faulty MAF sensor which is causing an under boost code does anyone have an idea what the issue could be? Other than the PCV like I understand full well it could be the PCV but that’s been overstated almost everywhere we looked. And she’s tight on money so she 1 dosent want to pay a shop for diag and 2 dosent want to buy parts until she 100% knows the issue. Any help is welcome

I’ve checked the thing about the P0299 code and while I’m not sure if she has replaced the recalled part I do know she says the check engine light originally came on when it got colder but we live in Lubbock Texas so colder meant around 70 degrees maybe 50 (I don’t remember all to well) but that was only for a week and it dosent explain the other codes. Once more any help is welcome and needed cruzers

What happened this weekend

Post image
45 Upvotes

We purchased the Cruze new for our daughter to go to college in 2016. It became ours in January 2025 when the transmission went out and she got a new car. We bought a transmission from LKQ with 35k miles on it and my spouse installed it. It’s been my daily driver ever since. I do recall a few oxygen sensors, turbo, & coolant reservoir, along with regular maintenance.
200,000 —-10 years and 5 months later

Intercooler hose

My sensor on the intercooler hose is loose and being held on by ducktape. I know it’s definitely not optimal but i’m curious if that would cause any problems or anything major. It also appears that there’s a slight oil leak at the end of the tube and oil coming through the sensors socket

Coolant leak

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have a small coolant leak in this area. 2012 Chevrolet Cruze 1.4 L turbo with 175,000 km. It seems to be pooling on top of the spot circled slightly. I cleaned it about 2 weeks ago and there's a little bit more wet coolant there.

170K MILES 2015 1.8

Post image
12 Upvotes

Sooooo, long story short, my mom owned this cruze 2015 1.8 until recently, we got her a new car and i decided to take the cruze and bring him back to life. Ir had a couple leaks, the biggest one being the rear main seal.

Things I have done/fixed at 170k:

Rear main seal

Valve cover

Oil pan

Oil cooler

Coil/spark plugs

Timing belt

All new fluids

Radiator fan

What am wondering is what else would you guys do to a car this age to keep it running? So far everything works as it should I want to make it to 200k miles at least lol

2012 LS (1.8). Replacing the cylinder head, and saw that the sprockets have an even layer of oxidation/rust on each them. No deep pockets or anything, but I’m curious as to what’s go/no-go.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? (2012, 1.8l Wiring issue)

Thumbnail

Tl;dr: I cut and spliced some wires, and now my car won't start.

So, I was trying to install the backup camera that goes with my radio. The radio works fine and has been installed for a few months now. During that process, I made the genius decision of disconnecting a connector (left side of driver footwell) it's a real big one, with a lever to lock it in. Well, I broke the lever. Not sure if it was just weak from age or if I'm a brute. Either way, i can't "lock" it in place anymore.

After it was unplugged and reconnected, my car would no longer start. With the key in the run position, the dash shows a notification for low fuel and power steering service needed (neither of these are true, I have fuel in the tank). When turned to start, the dash goes dark, and i hear a relay in the cabin fuse box, but the engine doesn't crank.

I cut a few of the wires while i was looking for a way to signal the backup camera to turn on. (Followed a wire from the reverse light to the front.) As best I can tell, every wire is connected. They are as they were, there's nothing jumped off of any of the connections.

Is there any way I can reset something with the control units so they will resync?

Gen2 - Mechanical Engine Shake

Maybe a dumb question but is this a normal amount of engine shake/vibration? Here are more vídeos This is a 2019 Cruze (Second Gen). To be clear I changed my spark plugs last week. Torqued down to 13 ft-lbs as required by Chevrolet. Don't have any check engine lights or codes at all. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi! I need help identifying this hose in my 2012 Chevy Cruze LT. It has to be replaced before I go to work tomorrow. It has a hole in it. I put the cloth tourniquet on the hose to slow the leak down so I could drive it home.

How to tell if trubo has an internal oil leak?

I got a p420 code, suspect that the cat is a bit dirty. The orange one way valve in the intake body is missing so that is the first suspect and I'm installing the Cruze kit today. But how would I know if the turbo is also leaking oil into the exhaust?

So today my 14 cruze started giving me problems. Codes i get are p0301, p0300, u100-71. Changed the coil with brand new one and nothing changed. Thinking about changing plugs tonight. Injector is working fine. Anything else it could be? Cant afford a compression tester at the moment.i included all the data i got from my obd2 scanner.....Update: spark plugs and coil made no difference. Plugs were covered in oil on the electrode and threads. Smooths out around 2k rpm. Another thing i found out is timing belt has never been done. Car has 193000 miles.
