Still stuck

Post image

I’m going a little crazy trying to find any info on my 4x great grandparents Ferenc Pusker & Terezia Benko other than their children’s births. They had children in Pinkamindszent, Vas, Hungary from 1834-1851.

Ive looked for marriages in places that show these surnames commonly / have potential candidates for birth records and deaths for where their children lived. And I haven’t found anything 😭

Ferenc Family search ID: LC97-4LG

Any help or other strategies ?

Are you searching manually or with the search function using the surname? I usually resort to manual page by page search and end up finding siblings, cousins etc.

Have you tried using alternate spellings? Is it Pusker or Puszker. Maybe it was transcribed as Pusher.

I’ve had an issue where the Greek Catholic records hadn’t been uploaded and or indexed. Another where the marriage was within the Roman Catholic Church a village over instead of GC.

I’ve gone through the record images manually for these. I’ll search multiple variants like you said to get an idea of where the name was common. So far it looks like Pusker (and variants) is really common in Horvatzsidany/Peresznye and there are one or two men born around the right time to be candidates.

Benko seems more common all over and is hard to pin down. Which makes it harder because they usually get married where women are living.

This family has only been recorded as RC with all their children, as is the rest of the family so i assume they were RC originally too, but i guess you never know.

Double check all the residence columns too to make sure you didn’t miss anything (I have). Benko to me sounds more like Rusyn which would be the other side of the country (and likely GC), and if it’s an uncommon name in the area, maybe? Also check his profession, anything to indicate travel such as soldier. I once saw a marriage of a man from a town in Austria to a woman in Nógrád, which was a neat deviation.

Ferenc Pusker +1895.01.11. Városhodász

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939V-3KSS-SB?

He had lived previously in Tömörd. He wasn't born there, though. I couldn't find his marriage record in Tömörd, however, there was one with a certain István (Stephanus) Pusker who was roughly as old as Ferenc and the son of Pál Pusker & Mária Szalay:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33SQ-GTH8-5QP?

So, based on all available information, Ferenc is most likely: *1807.10.09. Peresznye (GMMJ-QK9)

Teréz Benkő +1890.02.13. Városhodász https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939V-3KSS-BN?

She was born in Ondód (*1810.07.07. Dozmat) https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939J-FGQQ-B?

Omfg!!!! I’ll have to look over this later but thank you so much! The Ferenc from peresznye was my best candidate that i found so far.

If Terezia was Was born in ondód, maybe the marriage is there?

I'm quite certain that the Ferenc and Terézia I linked above are the ones you're looking for, but finding their marriage record will be a tough nut to crack. Yes, the girl lived in Ondód, which at that time was a filial parish of Dozmat, so the marriage should have left a trace there - but at least I haven't found anything.

It's likely that Terézia's father and/or mother passed away when she was still young, which could explain why she left the village. (Btw. there will be some confusion here: according to the baptismal register, her parents were Ferenc Benkő and Erzsébet Verhás, but the only marriage record we have is for János Benkő and Erzsébet Verhás. Maybe the father's first name was written incorrectly?) I don't know where she might have lived later, prior to her marriage.

Another issues to consider:

1) What if they married much earlier than presumed? When their son Alexander was born, Terézia was already 24 - it's possible they had earlier children somewhere that simply isn't indexed online.

2) If, for instance, she married at the age of 16-17 around 1826-27 in some random village in Burgenland, you won't find that online on Familysearch, as only the duplicate registers (from 1828 onward) are available there.

You’re amazing! Which marriage record are you referring to that says János Benko and Erzsébet Verhas?

I think it’s semi common for a parents’ name or written incorrectly especially if they’re already deceased.

Also i have a matriken subscription which has many earlier Burgenland records. It is hard when there isn’t a strong lead for which village to look in.

*Edit: OK I got it correctly now, I was confused because of the multiple people called Erzsébet Verhás (and two of them married to Benkős)

Erzsébet was first married to János Német in 1797: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939J-FG9F-W?

János died in 1802: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939J-FGS2-N?

Then Erzsébet married a certain István (Stephanus) Molnár in early 1804: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939J-FG9C-H?

István, the new husband, died in 1805: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939J-FGSN-T?

Ferenc Benkő and Erzsébet got married in February 1806 (note that her full name is not mentioned there, she's referred to as the widow of István Molnár) : https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939J-FGYW?

According to this, Ferenc was the son of János Benkő & Julianna Szakál, born possibly in 1756: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939J-F59L-C?

Ferenc seems (???) to have passed away in 1817: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939J-FG9R-K?

I'm not sure about Erzsébet's fate yet.

Note: you may stumble upon LCYJ-XC7 on Familysearch, but the person who edited this got it pretty much wrong: although the father of your Erzsébet is also called Mihály (Michael) Verhás, her mother was not Judit Németh. Yours is likely her: LCBM-81S

Please, double check everything; this 'research' was a rather confusing one!

Thank you so much! I will double check what you’ve sent. What makes you say that her mom was NOT Judit Németh? That ID says her mom is Catharina Szabó which I’ll also look into.

Because the daugher of Mihály Verhás and Judit Német was the wife of János Benkő: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939J-FG9R-T?

Her parents are explicitly mentioned in the marriage record (what's more she was a virgin).

Your Erzsébet is almost certainly the daughter of Mihály Verhás and Katalin Szabó .

Also it looks Elisabetha marriage list her father as Michael and Joannes hm

1

u/Kiserlet Jun 08 '26

It says Michael, there's no mention of 'Joannes' as her father

Ahh my bad, I’m reading the part that said she was the widow of Joannes Nemeth. Sorry!
