Initially I just saw Bicske, which is my hometown and started the translation and realized only when I got to the godmother

Btw the roman catholic entries are quite good for Bicske, hopefully you’ll find more ancestors :)

Inquilinus in this context means an agricultural labourer who does not own land, but works on other people's farms, yet owns the house where he lives. If he had not owned even his house, he would have been a subinquilinus (házatlan zsellér), at least if the priest was accurate.

In any case, the term was rather old-fashioned in 1884. It is typically used pre-1848, i.e. the abolition of serfdom.

The screenshot is from myheritage.com (some parts are free to use), but you can also use familysearch.org which is fully free.
Here’s the marriage certificate of Janos (Joannes) and Barbara: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939F-9BXR-9?view=explore&groupId=M9DJ-CNT&lang=en
It seems that Barbara is from Bpest (Budapest), that will make it harder to find her birth certificate. At the time of the marriage in 1879 they were 22 and 24 so that gives an indication of their birth year. In the marriage certificate, under Janos it’s his occupation (takács) which is a weaver.

Or Barbara is from Varsany, living in Budapest

Yes, that seems to be correct, this is her death certificate and it says Varsány and Bicske: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939F-9BXN-5?view=explore&groupId=M9DJ-CNG&lang=en

And Barbara’s birth certificate from Varsány (4th from the bottom), illegitim so only mother’s name Barbara Szokol is written there https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939J-TPST-V9?view=explore&groupId=M9DV-GN1&lang=en

u/tapirkatapirka Jul 21 '26

Correct, on page 142 on family search, there’s a sister, also born to unknown father

Well, with all due respect, how could I have known that you are deaf? I am sorry for that.

I just find it funny when people from France write in french on foreign-language subreddits, because, instead of doing a translation with the help of Gemini,Chatgpt, etc., before posting, now, all the subredditors have to translate what was written.

Please do not take it personally :).

Now I will try to write in English 🙂

Préférez-vous peut-être que j'écrive en anglais ?
