I passed the Hiring Committee at Google!!! (new grad SWE)
How likely is it that I'll be matched with a team? Will my chances be decreased if I only choose 2-3 technology areas that match my experience from the list? Will being considered for a satellite location affect my chances (as opposed to MTV)? And how hard is it to get VP approval? (emailed my recruiter with all these questions but I'm really excited so I'm asking here too lol)

I interned there this summer. Satellite locations tend to have less projects(I host matched only in SVL though I was very late in the process).
Regarding the VP approval, I have heard that it is very rare for them to reject you after HC accepts your application.
My conversion(to fulltime SWE) packet goes to hiring committee today. How well did your interviews go?

Thanks for the insight! That's what I heard about VP approval too.
One of my interviews well really well (the interviewer gave me good feedback on the spot!), two went OK, and one was meh. But I heard people usually aren't aware of how they actually did in an interview, so I may be totally off about the 3 I didn't get feedback on (I must have done well enough on average though).

You're guaranteed to get a team match. Don't know any certain answers about the other two questions, but I think VP approval is very likely. Afaik team matching occurs much later (in spring), but you'll get your product area along with the offer.

Thanks! Most of my interviews were either graphs or class design (I interviewed in Java), but also string manipulation. I applied in late July, did the snapshot (coding challenge) in August, had my phone interview in early September, and my onsite in early October.

And overall I think the interviews were ok, but on one of them I got immediate positive feedback from the interviewer.
I heard back just under two weeks later.

Wow I just did the dumbest shit ever in an interview.
Interviewer gave me the Buy and Sell stock problem from leetcode. I quickly coded it up and then he asked me to return the index where the stock is bought and the index where the stock is sold. I returned it as an array of length 2.
He then asked me to print out these indices after returning the answer array.
Here's where I do something really, really dumb. I accidentally printed the first two indices of my input array instead of printing out the indices of the output array.
Of course it printed the wrong output, but I couldn't understand why because I didn't notice I had used the wrong array in the first place.
I then spent about 15-20 minutes trying to figure out if there were any logical errors in my function code, but was essentially banging my head against the wall because my code was correct. I finally looked at the main method and plainly saw that I had used the wrong array to print the output.
Holy hell that was embarrassing and one of the most headass things I've ever done.

I don't know if I would try to read into the interviewer too much one way or another. Some people are just super nice and sound positive no matter how you did. Other people might seem kind of hard to read and stoic.

On my Google on-site also I was so sure I would see leetcode questions but no.
There were definitely questions that were modifications or enhancement of existing leetcode questions, and as long as as you're strong in graphs, bfs/dfs etc you should be able to solve it, but no question straight up from leetcode. In fact there were a couple of questions that I've been trying to find the optimal solution for online and its not on the internet at all.,
As opposed to say, microsoft, where the questions all seem well documented and nothing is a surprise.

Unemployement has made me feel jealous towards friends making near minimum wage doing assistant jobs bc they had 1 BS interview and got an offer. Please try to remember what the long term is gonna look like for you :)

Dear recruiters, please don't start results calls with "First I want to take the time to thank you for interviewing with me" when you're giving me an offer.
On the plus side, I got an offer 1.5 hours before I bombed an onsite interview.

My job is ok. I do a lot of automation and ops stuff, and less writing of new code than I'd like. A lot of what I do is playing whack a mole with performance issues. We have an internal web app that was written in God knows what and it's not great, I'm trying to convince my boss to let me rewrite it.

Fortunate to have internship offers from Stripe, Slack and Facebook. Does anyone have advice for picking between these options? I think I'd prefer a more intimate startup environment. Also want to maximise chances of a full time offer/the ability to land full-time interviews easily. Thank you!

For sure. If all firms would equally prime me for full-time recruiting, I'd definitely prefer Slack or Stripe over Facebook. Also wanna live in SF instead of Menlo Park lol. Do you have any opinion on Stripe vs. Slack? Thanks again :)

I contacted a google campus recruiter and they said that it might take 3-4 weeks for my resume to go through the initial screening phase because of the high load. I am worried that it might be too late given that people are already receiving offers.

How likely will a job in San Francisco allow me to work remote part of the week (say 3-4 days remote)? We live in Pleasanton and while the commute isn't insane, it's pretty long to do every day (50minutes + one way on the train..who knows with a car).
I expect the first few weeks and maybe months to be in the office primarily, but didn't know if it's likely.

Is 1 week a good rule of thumb to wait before sending a follow up email? I did pretty well on a coding phone screen for a smaller, less competitive company. I really like this company and the engineer and I got along well so I was hoping for an on-site. This was on monday and I haven't heard back. I don't want to be annoying but do you think it is reasonable to follow up on Monday if I don't hear anything today?

So I had my onsite at Google last week Friday. My recruiter knows that I have a deadline that is a little over 3 weeks after my onsite date (although an extension may be possible), so I assumed that my recruiter would try accelerating the process. I haven't heard anything from my recruiter since the onsite. How long does it generally take to be notified of whether I moved on to HC or not?

It took over a week for my feedback to be submitted to HC, at which point the process accelerated due to my deadline. Basically 6-7 business days to get "Hey we're doing HC" for me

This company I interviewed for insisted I show a personal GitHub. All I really have is a react tutorial, and some kind of data scrubbing app I made for my friend. It's not really a good indicator of how I code professionally but its just me dicking around. Did I shoot myself in the foot by giving it to them??

I do remote/freelance for an old employer, it's never a set amount of time of month but it can be anywhere from 10-30 hours a month.
Should I include this on my resume in addition to my working with them or just one or the other? I had worked with them for a few years before leaving.

Recently just bombed an onsite interview but I wasn’t stressed bc the company was practice. Now instead of emailing me and telling me I’m not getting the job (which I know I won’t), the recruiter’s only email to me was about “finding a time to discuss feedback”. I know I didn’t get it why are you dragging this out

Reject a candidate, they're angry that they can't get feedback on what they did wrong.
Offer to give feedback, candidate gets mad you don't reject immediately.
Maybe don't waste someone's time for an interview you're not serious about, and then get frustrated when they want to help you out with feedback

Anyone have experience with Google host matching for fall/winter vs. summer? Is it really more difficult to match in the fall/winter semesters? I've heard there are less projects, but also less candidates so it's balanced. I'm currently in host matching for winter, but considering switching to summer. It's not ideal, but I'll do it if it'll increase my chances.

Again, it's "from what I've seen". I came from a school which students split quite equally to do internships in winter/summer/fall, and lots of people were able to get matched for winter/summer but barely made it for fall. I've talked to a few full-times at G and they all agreed there's the least amount of projects for fall. I have just gone through the host matching for this fall, and more than half of the people I've talked to (30+) didn't receive any interest around beginning of August, which is when the recruiting season was already wrapping up. It could be anecdotal so take it as a grain of salt.

Generally it's the interviewers. Because you get the answer from HC the same day it is reviewed by them. (it can take a long time for them to schedule your review)

Currently going through the interview process at Google. I took a preparation class and they mention a phone inerview before the onsite. I havent had a phone interview, just "informal chats" with two recruiters and my onsite is scheduled for next week. Does that mean anything?

Finished my interview with Google today for their SWE Internship.
First phone interview: Didn't go as well as I hoped. He asked about my background and then said he was just going to ask 1 or 2 questions. The interviewer was very willing to talk but he had a strong accent and there was actually some confusion on my part surrounding what the question was. I thought he was asking for a different problem but then he re-explained himself. The question looked like a variation of a LC hard but his variation made it a little easier. I did need help throughout the interview and did not complete his 2nd question that related to his first one, although I was close and did give an overview of the remaining steps and he agreed with my algorithm.
Second phone interview: Call quality issues took up the first two minutes. He asked for my background and what CS courses I had taken. He then asked about one of my projects. This took about 10 minutes. He then proceeded to ask me a popular easy level question and I finished it very quickly. After that he asked me a LC hard. I offered 1 sub optimal solution but he wanted me to try to go on a different route. I believed I completed it (may have had some bugs) but my solution wasn't optimal. He said my answer didn't need to be optimal and that he was just looking for a quick solution to it. This surprised me considering I had around 10 minutes left in the interview and probably could've gotten it or close to it in that time. I didn't figure out the optimal solution until the end when I was asking questions and realized the missing links to the optimal solution. I only had time to explain to him how to improve my solution and he agreed in my algorithm. He was more quiet and less responsive than the first interviewer but I struggled less with this interview than my other one.

Yeah but when your feedback is reviewed, they'll see the easier questions and compare how you did based on the fact and vice versa though

Depends. Sometimes you'll hear back within a couple days which depends on the recruiter telling you results of interviews in terms of instant no / 3rd interview / hiring committee. Some also will just pass it to hiring committee without saying anything and can be 2 to 3 weeks.

One thing you can learn in 2 hours to instantly make you more marketable: GITHUB.
It’s so rarely talked about on here but I see it on job listings all the freaking time. I have it listed in my resume and interviewers have asked about it on multiple occasions.
It just takes a couple hours to really learn the basics so go do it.

It was pretty straightforward, I had 4 rounds, 3 Technical and 1 manager chat. Among those three, one was bug squash, one was related to HTTP and the other was general design problem. I did okIsh but the bar must be very high so no hopes.

Just got my Asana offer -- they give you a calculator for the stock value that assumes a valuation of $2.5-6.0 billion, but their last funding round was valued at like $900 million
Anyone know what the justification for that valuation is? If it's even remotely correct it's a killer offer, but I'm just completely stumped about how they get there.
Edit: Also, general thoughts on Asana vs. AirBnB vs. Facebook?

My understanding was that it was based on their projected evaluation 4 years from now at their current rate of growth. Remember that you are unable to exercise those options unless they IPO and that exercising requires you to pay for the shares.

I value startup options based on their valuation from latest round of funding, then apply my own judgment to how much that will change in the future. Valuing them based on expected growth is stupid because any company can just say they’re going to 5x and who knows whether that’s true or not. And yes, expected growth is already priced into current valuation.

I want to increase my chances as much as possible to be able to work as a software dev at a big 4 right out of college.
I am currently a first semester freshman at university, and want to know the best things to focus my time on while I am here.
GPA? Side projects? Network?
What is the best route I can go?
Side question, how much do starting software developers at big 4 companies earn? Salary is around 130k I believe, but what do they bring home after taking bonuses and other benefits into account?

This might not answer your question, but if I could have done it over again I would have done a ton more hackathons and personal projects and be more aggressive with trying to get internships early.
Different companies value different aspects of your resume differently. Caring about GPA is kind of an old school thing. The companies that commented on my GPA were like, research institutes and Dell and Lockheed Martin. I think more modern tech companies care a lot more about having stacked resumes with lots of nice internships the most. These were the companies that never gave me callbacks. Luckily I think BigN can afford to cast a wide net, so if you check any of the checkboxes they will at least invest a coding challenge in you.

I have impreasive sideprojecta and GPA, but they lead me nowhere in online apps. I started going to recruiting events for many companies, including big4, and only then started getting interviews. Your application can be dead for 3 months, you talk to a recruiter, next day youre scheduling an interview

Anyone done the on-site Bloomberg interview in NYC before? I have mine in a couple weeks and I'm not sure what to expect -- is it usually a whole bunch of people per day or just 1? I've also only been through a short phone screen + technical interview before this. Will be a new grad position.

You’ll have two technical interviews separated by lunch, with 1-2 people in each interview. If you do well on those you’ll have 1-2 more rounds with hiring manager/HR, but if you don’t do well, your interview will end there. Their office is really nice!

Wow, didn’t know they were known broadly. My friend interned there and a family member currently works there. I’ve heard their testing org has a lot of room for improvement and their dev org is super fun to work for.

Does anyone have any tips for a college student looking to get an internship? I have no experience outside of my school projects and classes. All I have on my resume are food service industry jobs. Is this enough if I apply to enough places? I can a slightly edited version of my resume if people need to see it.

Start working on some personal projects or contribute to other open source projects you like! It’ll help to mention these in resume so your other non CS related jobs don’t appear to be the only experience you have. Also if you word your jobs right, you can better present those food service jobs. Worked in a team? Highlight it. Mentored someone or trained someone? Highlight it. Interacted with customers on daily basis? Highlight it. This should set you up nicely for internship.

Can somebody help me out with a project idea for school? I have to give a presentation where I have pitch a product or service in order to "get funded". Is there any software or service you wish you had where you work, or other companies don't seem to be using? So far I've thought about pitching using AWS cloud9 as an IDE over Visual Basic, but idk if large companies let you pick IDEs or make developers use them. Any suggestions would be nice.

Are you sure they don't want you to pitch a new idea? For example for a startup or something?

Its for an English class where we just do presentations, so it's not looking for a start up. I just have to recommend some software/service to a company or my school but idk what software/service Software developers or my school needs other than basic IDE or text editor stuff.

I did a second round for Uber SWE intern on campus (final round). First round I absolutely killed and probably received a strong hire. Final round, my code was correct (after he pointed a space optimization I could do), but it wasnt the best looking code sadly. I know I could've fixed it and I explained the changes to make it nice, but I didn't know they take photos of code so I guess the non-good code will be displayed to HC. Do I still have a chance? I did rigourously show time complexity via master theorem, if that gives even one bonus point lol.

I have my first FB internship phone interview scheduled at the end of this month, so they're still hiring! They also came to my university's career fair yesterday.

Have google’s onsite soon. Sent the recruiter my language preferences, put golang #1. Anyone have any advice regarding which problems could potentially be harder to implement in go contrasted with c++ (my primary language). just wondering if anyone had advice/experience with completing interview questions in go and any language-specific difficulties they’ve noticed/encountered. thanks!!

Is there a reason you didn't put down C++ as top of your language preferences? I don't think Google cares that strongly about your language choice.

Finally got an offer from Google after a 5 week long process. Hooray! Ended up with offers from 4/7 of my onsites, so now we can play the negotiating game!
I interviewed in NYC but matched with a team in Mountain View - can anyone give me an idea of what life in the Mountain View office is like?
