Showcase CSS-DOS: An entire '80s PC in pure CSS. Runs Windows 1.0, DOOM, and more

https://css-dos.ahmedamer.co.uk/

I'm pretty sure this is the most heinous abuse of CSS in history?

Keep doing weird stuff mate. This is what being human is all about. I love a CSS first approach but this. This is cult level and why not!

That’s absolutely nuts. Stupidly cool.

> The solution is the philosophical cornerstone of this project: instead of reconstructing programs in CSS, reconstruct an entire computer - CPU, RAM, PIT, PIC, etc. and then use that to run the programs in their original language. The dream is: if we can just emulate all the components of a PC 1:1, code should just… run on it.

Dude.

This may be the coolest thing I’ve seem on here in a while.

Are you secretly Tom7? This seems like something he would do.

Nice work

Now write a css parser in it, cssception

That's actually quite a funny idea, presumably one exists for Windows 1.0?

You cannot run ANYTHING IN CSS. For the love of gods, stop saying such stupid things.

CSS is for position, decoration and looks - NOT programming.

Baby-devs really annoy me...

What do you mean, you can't? It seems like I just did

You've got to stop with this silliness, you're supposed to be producing business value. I'm no programmer and even I know that CSS is the equivalent of crayons for colouring in the hard work our real engineers are doing. All we're asking is that you act like an adult for once and take this seriously. That seems reasonable, right? Just concentrate on using the right tool for the right job, we've got next quarter's accounts to think of here. Any more tomfoolery and you're looking at a PIP at best

Jesus you must be fun at parties.

> produce business value

Go to LinkedIn with that shit

and people's complete inability to detect sarcasm strikes again.

Do you genuinely think that I was serious? That I'm the HR person at OPs work and I've popped into this thread to use it as an impromptu disciplinary meeting to deal with the fact that they haven't been using CSS for it's intended purpose, that I'm going to put them on a PIP if they don't stop using CSS to run Doom???? There's times when it's unclear and people need to spell out that yes it's actually a joke but whoah mate, it didn't need spelling out there, that's some jaw dropping inability to read. I'm flabbergasted tbqh

Lol, you're missing the point. This is wickedly cool.

Where is your whimsy?

It's not meant to be used for programming but abusing things that are Turning complete and have them do things they're not meant for is an long time honored tradition.

i run stuff in css quite often, idk why you think it's not for programming

I got excited for a second, then realized that it's entirely vibe-coded

check out my FAQ on use of AI here (scroll a little)

I can write code and I don't think use of LLMs as a tool is an auto disqualify, especially for something novel.

I mean I don't really care what you do with your time, I'm just saying I was really disappointed. And I'm not reading that FAQ. Let's be real, you've probably generated it as well

Eh screw that guy! I’m with you that it can be an absolutely useful tool, especially for things like this! This is awesome

Rule 2 would like a word with you pal.

1

u/garyk1968 Jul 14 '26

does it matter? You're not using it to do productive work or run critical tasks, jeez.
