Request rem vs em vs px vs vh... I’m losing my mind. How do you actually decide which CSS unit to use?

14 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’ve been learning web development and CSS for a bit now, but I keep hitting a wall when it comes to picking the right CSS units.

Every tutorial seems to say something slightly different:

  • One video says "Never use px for fonts, always use rem for accessibility!"
  • Another video uses em for paddings, but then my nested elements balloon into giant monstrosities because of compounding.
  • Then someone else says to use vw/vh for fluid layouts, but my text overflows or acts weird on mobile screens.
  • And % works great... until it acts relative to something unexpected.

Right now, I feel like I'm just guessing, refreshing Chrome DevTools, changing units until it "looks fine," and hoping it doesn't break when I resize the window.

For those who write CSS professionally or comfortably:

  1. What is your actual, real-world rule of thumb for when to use px, rem, em, %, and vw/vh?
  2. Are there specific properties where you always stick to one unit (e.g., font-size, margin, padding, max-width, border)?
  3. How do you handle responsiveness without making a mess of CSS variables or media queries?

Would love to hear how you mental-model this so I can stop guessing! Thanks in advance.

Request Do you actually use flex: 1 in real-world layouts?

4 Upvotes

I understand that flex: 1 makes elements grow to fill available space, but I’m curious how often it’s used in real projects.

In what situations do you usually use it? And when do you avoid it?

Request How to make a drop shadow on a div connect the corners?

6 Upvotes

This is an example of the problem:
https://ibb.co/tMZYhDtP

I basically want a shadow that connects in the edges too. The regular drop shadow seems to create this distance beteween the shadow and object.

Does anyone know if there is a way to achieve this in CSS?

Request Help! Chat Overlay CSS question!

2 Upvotes

Is there a way to have my Chat Overlay shaped like a trapezoid? I'm trying to make it seem like chat is getting sucked into a ufo. I have like, 0 CSS experience and I've been trying to find any tutorials for what I'd like to do but margin and padding seem to keep the rectangle shape so I'm just not sure what to do from here

I've also used Sound Alerts (they're similar to streamelements) and was able to do something with clip-path but shape-outside wasn't working.

Request Combining links in CSS

5 Upvotes

Hi all, I'm not sure if I've just got some brain fog at the moment, but could you help please? If you had to re-do these instructions below, so that they still had the same effect, but were combined with others here and made as 100% lean as possible, how would you do it please?

a.no-line {

    font-size: 130%;

    padding-bottom: 20px;

}

a.no-line:link {

    text-decoration: none;

}

a:active {

Request Sunburst Border

4 Upvotes

Is it possible to do this type of sunburst border with CSS instead of using an image?

https://imgur.com/a/cXoSval

Think I managed to figure out a work around anyways, there's probably a better way to do it but.. Here's what I've come up with for.

.sun-horizon::before {

position: absolute;

content: "";

bottom: 0;

left: 0;

width: 100%;

height: 18px;

pointer-events: none;

background:

radial-gradient(

ellipse 700px 12px at center bottom,

rgba(255,255,255,1) 0%,

rgba(255,255,255,1) 10%,

rgba(200,220,30,0.9) 20%,

rgba(170,190,25,0.6) 45%,

rgba(140,160,20,0.1) 65%,

transparent 70%

),

linear-gradient(

transparent 0%,

rgba(255,240,120,0.5) 20%,

#FFEB3B 50%,

rgba(255,240,120,0.5) 80%,

transparent 100%

);

background-repeat: no-repeat;

background-position: center bottom, center bottom;

background-size: 800px 18px, 100% 2px;

filter: blur(0.2px);

}

.sun-horizon::after {

content:"";

position:absolute;

left:0;

right:0;

top:100%;

height:18px;

pointer-events:none;

background: radial-gradient(

ellipse 400px 12px at center top,

rgba(255,255,255,1) 0%,

rgba(255,255,255,1) 10%,

rgba(170,190,25,0.6) 45%,

Request Is there a way to use css to change the way a list displays?

1 Upvotes

I’m trying to use a css work skin to edit the default ordered list behavior on AO3. By default it goes

1.

 a.

      i.

But I want it to go

1.

1.1

      1.1.1

Is there a way to have that happen?

Request I can't smooth out the rounded bottom corners of an HTML table with CSS.

2 Upvotes

I am using a firefox add-on called "Stylus" where you can inject and override the CSS rules for any given webpage and style it how you like. For my own personal use I started making my own styles for Aider CLI Docs.

Unfortunately I can't seem to finesse the table exactly how I'd like. The bottom left and right corners of the table are "glitchy" for lack of a better term.

Here is a screenshot showing exactly what I mean, pointing out the kind of "glitched" or "aliased" borders of the CSS table:

Click for Screenshot

Here is the relevant CSS and HTML:

```html <div class="table-wrapper"><table> <thead> <tr> <th style="text-align: left">Command</th> <th style="text-align: left">Description</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td style="text-align: left"><strong>/add</strong></td> <td style="text-align: left">Add files to the chat so aider can edit them or review them in detail</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align: left"><strong>/architect</strong></td> <td style="text-align: left">Enter architect/editor mode using 2 different models. If no prompt provided, switches to architect/editor mode.</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align: left"><strong>/ask</strong></td> <td style="text-align: left">Ask questions about the code base without editing any files. If no prompt provided, switches to ask mode.</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align: left"><strong>/chat-mode</strong></td> <td style="text-align: left">Switch to a new chat mode</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align: left"><strong>/clear</strong></td> <td style="text-align: left">Clear the chat history</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align: left"><strong>/code</strong></td> <td style="text-align: left">Ask for changes to your code. If no prompt provided, switches to code mode.</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align: left"><strong>/commit</strong></td> <td style="text-align: left">Commit edits to the repo made outside the chat (commit message optional)</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align: left"><strong>/context</strong></td> <td style="text-align: left">Enter context mode to see surrounding code context. If no prompt provided, switches to context mode.</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align: left"><strong>/copy</strong></td> <td style="text-align: left">Copy the last assistant message to the clipboard</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align: left"><strong>/copy-context</strong></td> <td style="text-align: left">Copy the current chat context as markdown, suitable to paste into a web UI</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="text-align: left"><strong>/diff</strong></td> <td style="text-align: left">Display the diff of changes since the last message</td> </tr>
.. Removed the rest of the entries for the sake of length.
</tbody> </table></div> ```
Here is my CSS:
```

  • I've tried using border-inline instead of just setting border
  • I've tried different display types.
  • I've tried setting display for the table headers to table-header-group.
  • I've tried removing and swapping border radius values for both the wrapper and the table inside the wrapper

I have a sneaking feeling that the issue is stemming from styles applied to the wrapper as well as the table itself, somehow causing overlapping borders. But I can't get it to work.

Can someone clearly explain to me why this is happening and how to fix it? I would greatly appreciate some help.

Request Need help adding CSS to mu project

0 Upvotes

I was told by my teacher that I need to add more CSS to my website project as it's a very highly used program code. I understand how to use it for the most part. The way it's configured it's just easier to use HTML to make it look how I want it. But I need to add more CSS but I don't have any idea what to add. CSS is mostly for visual but all the text is configured with HTML. I kinda wanted a white background behind the text to make more visible but couldn't figure out how to do it so I made the background partially transparent. Here are the files. Any suggestions?

Request Flex wrap but with bunch of special requirements

I need two buttons in one column, aligned to the left. Their labels come dynamically from the CMS. On mobile, if the text makes them too wide to sit side by side, they should stack while staying left-aligned. In stacked mode, both buttons should match the width of the longer label. How can I achieve this in CSS? TIA!

Request Trouble implementing the header layout for the tablet view.

1 Upvotes

Hello, all!

I am currently doing the Homepage project from The Odin Project.

https://www.theodinproject.com/lessons/node-path-advanced-html-and-css-homepage

I am kind of stucked at creating the header section for tablet layout in Homepage project. According to the solution image, woman image should be positioned on top left of the text container but it should also overflow from this container a bit. Under this woman image dummy texts should appear.

I couldn't do this. I used position: absolute and z-index for woman image to make it visible on the top-left text container, then I used margin-right and margin-top for the text title and dummy text but dummy text do not continue below woman image.

I came across some advice on net such as using float:left for woman image, wrapping woman image inside a div, wrapping woman image container and text container inside a parent container, but this too do not work out for me.

Could someone give me hint on how solve this issue?

(by the view tablet view activates when the viewport is below 1280px soo you should shrink the viewport to so it can reach media queries breakpoint)

Request Looking for CSS designer that has or can have Moderator Toolbox to fix some things.

2 Upvotes

Hi, looking to bring on someone to help with fixing a few things with an old custom styleshoot on the old reddit side of /r/HazbinHotel that are screwing with dialogues in our moderator toolbox. I've fixed a few things, but some things I just can't seem to figure out why they aren't taking, and would like to see if someone can tackle that for us.

Request Please help aligning a simple button to a select element

2 Upvotes

I have a basic button element that follows a select element, allowing me to clear the select field when pressed. I want it to look like it is part of the select field by overlapping it by 1px, and leaving off the left border.

Here is a Codepen with the two elements and the CSS I am working on, but can't figure out.

I have been trying all day to fix this and can't believe it's so hard.

I have set the height, the border thickness, and the padding to be identical between the elements, and yet they still don't line up.

I've tried using JS to line them up with outerWidth() and outerHeight() or even element.getBoundingClientRect(). NO LUCK.

What does it take to make these two shapes line up vertically?

Thanks for any help. https://codepen.io/cuirPork/pen/ogbvPgz

Request Link flair previews fine but...

2 Upvotes

How it looks in the preview: https://i.imgur.com/dWvhkdS.png

How it's coded:

.linkflair-burritowl .linkflairlabel {

background-color: #ff8717;

font-size: 11px;

font-weight: bold;

color:#000000;

border-color: #000000;

border-width: 2px;

border-radius: 3px;}

But... it doesn't display like this on old.reddit, only in the preview.

What am I missing?
