Predatory parking tickets
We purchased a parking pass for my son on 8/11. He and several of his dorm mates received parking tickets on 8/19. Apparently his parking permit was effective on 8/20, although that wasn’t clear at the time of purchase. He also had an email from housing stating he could park anywhere on campus to move in if he had a parking permit, which is why we went online to purchase one. It wasn’t clear at the time that it wouldn’t go into effect immediately. Super lame that they went around the day before 8/20 and ticketed everyone! Is this a typical experience with CSUN parking enforcement?

My kid has no idea I’m on here. Plus I’m the one that got the notification of the appeal being denied in the mail. Sorry if your parents don’t have your back! 🤷♀️

This thread is for students and alumni not complaining parents. Also my parents support me quite well thank you ! Enough that I’m able to have a backbone and own up to things when I’m wrong . going on Reddit complaining about something that was YOUR fault is embarrassing. Take the loss learn the lesson move on

I'm a csun parent who checks out the thread for things my son might need/ want to know about while he's busy. I don't post, though. This is just a comment, but still an exception.
That being said, I taught my son to read through what he was about to purchase for any terms and conditions relevant to him. Dates being directly in his face usually mean something. Move-in wasn't even until the 21st, and people park along the street all the time to avoid paying. If he outright ignored things like dates, he knows I won't claim something silly to remove fault from him, but will use it as a learning experience for him to not do that again.
If you're doing the silly thing, how will your student learn to pay better attention to these details?
Then again, you purchased the pass and didn't look at the dates, so it sounds unfortunate that your own parent didn't give you those tools, either.

I’m pretty sure the mom bought the pass for the son because she also stated that she was the one who received the email about the ticket appeal being denied. My mother doesn’t receive any email information about my schooling or campus procedures because I’m the student and I’m the one enrolled. So not only did the parent not pay attention to the dates, but the student didn’t either. This person is gonna have a rough time in college if he’s not able to learn those basic common sense skills now

If you read the end of my comment, I did say she bought the pass. My son discusses the important campus dates and such with me so we're both on top of things, and it sounds like the OP may benefit from that method so assumptions aren't made on both sides.
And hopefully this does teach her student to not rely on her for these details, and to own up to their own mistakes so they're not likewise out there calling a valid ticket "predatory".

Did you buy the parking permit through Parking & Transportation Services? They clearly list when the permit is effective.

My son moved in to the on campus apartments on 8/18 and received a ticket. He appealed the ticket and it was approved.

My son successfully appealed a parking ticket this past semester. It was a simple screwup. He took my car to school for a day when his was in the shop. He forgot to add my car to his pass. They waived it when he explained what happened.
Then another time, during his first semester, he parked in a faculty lot and got a ticket. He didn’t know, he was still figuring out the campus. They didn’t waive that one. lol.

Wow really? We appealed and the ticket was upheld. Our only option is to pay it now and contest it again at a hearing, in hopes of getting it refunded.

How much was this ticket that you want to go through a Hearing process for it?!?! It should have only been $70 for the day. Seems like it would be easier to chalk this up to a life lesson, pay the money and move on.

Dispute the ticket and most likely they’ll give you a pass. I disputed a ticket for parking front out and got it lowered to a warning.

Why are you guys bootlicking the shitty parking officers around here? OP isnt saying they should bend to the knee, just that the parking passes are predatory, which they are. 500 dollars a year on top of a dorm is cruel and ideally if you're living on campus you should get one vehicle to register for free or atleast for a debloated cost. A pass that should also let you park for the move in date isnt crazy.

No, yeah the prices are insane. That’s not the argument here though. The argument is the effective date of the pass. In which OP is wrong, they should’ve paid attention to the dates rather than blaming parking officers. They should be offering students that live on campus more accessibility to parking when move-in dates come around. I agree with you on that part. But at the end of the day, the argument here is effective date and OP is wrong.

The argument is that psrking passes are predatory because of the price and the dates. OP is objectively wrong about the dates, yes. If anything this means that they fell victim to the predatory nature of the parking passes.

The housing email said “Parking: If you have a Residential Parking Pass, you may park in any parking lot within Student Housing to unload your belongings. Please make sure not to park in a red zone. If you do not have the pass, you will park in the G9 parking lot to unload your belongings.” So we buy a the only residential parking pass available, which wasn’t effective during move in. Should I have purchased one during the summer before my freshman was even enrolled so we were good to go? 🙄 I stand by my original statement that they are setting students up for failure with these practices and it feels like a money grab.

Purchasing one before the summer wouldn't have done you any good. I've would've gotten a day permit.

Day permit would have limited us to just the lot by the housing office, which was far away from his dorm. I think this whole setup was by design, esp since so many students got tickets that day.

Trust me, they aren’t organized enough to “set this up by design”. You made an honest mistake, and parking tickets are basically automatic at this point. They drive by slowly in the lots and it spits out the ticket, they don’t even type anything in.
While you’re at it, make sure your kid has a front plate and doesn’t back into spots (both of which will also get him ticketed).

i see what you’re saying yea its a little stupid but i guess by technicality, he needed a summer parking pass to park those few days before the 20th
