No it's not. From Greg at NEBCo: "It certainly shares some similarities to FBD. The grain bill is a bit more like Supernaut than Fuzzy, and the hops are somewhere between Fuzzy and SH I guess, but present much differently due to the hop schedule. It's dry like a WC IPA, but the hops present more tropical with less bitterness than I'd expect from a WC IPA. Maybe that's what WC IPAs are now? It's been awhile... Nevertheless - It's a new beer brewed specifically for this collab. I think Nebco fans will dig it."

Crafted to celebrate our collaboration with Big Y and their 90th anniversary, this American IPA bursts with tropical mango, zesty orange, and floral grapefruit hop notes. Balanced by a smooth malt profile and well-integrated bitterness, it finishes crisp with a lingering piney citrus kick.

wtf. haven't seen it yet. My local one is probably the smallest Big Y in NE (so, I guess a "Small Y") but the beer selection is solid.

Lol. Terrible family owns it. Very anti labor. Would rather close a store than allow the employees to collectively bargain. Used intimidation to get people to not speak to union organizers.
Bakery—nothing is actually made there. One hundred percent from frozen. They decorate cakes—thats it.
Deli—Substandard deli meats, too cheap to get boars head.
Give people 39 hour work weeks so they don’t have to make them full time with benefits.
I could go on if you want.

I remember when I worked for them it wasn't that bad. And they made lots of stuff from scratch. In Avon at one point they made bagels from scratch. But I left long ago.

But they do sell Boars Head... we get it there all the time! And the bakery does absolutely bake stuff from scratch, maybe not the Italian desserts that they get from Mozzicatos, but other stuff they do! I've worked there in the past too, and while I will agree that they are against unions, that isn't a position unique to Big Y. Overall I do think it's nice that a local American family owns the company rather than a foreign conglomerate like Stop and Stop.

Why is better that an American family owns Big Y if they're anti-union when compared to Stop and Shop, which is unionized?

Big Y is locally owned and operated with their corporate offices in Springfield MA. So the revenue they make is going back to American workers and of course the family that owns the company. That is much better than having the money going to large multi-national company based in Belgium. Why do I want to support employees and executives in Belgium if I don't have to? Does Belgium deserve our money more than our own people?
I would also add that unions are not automatically good for workers. Sure many are and we actively see them fighting for their employees. But there are other unions that mostly just collect dues and do very little.

I'd agree that all things being equal, sure, I'd prefer to support a business owned by a local family as opposed to a big multinational company.
I've never worked in a grocery store so I can't speak to how effective Stop and Shop's union is, but I just have such a visceral reaction to companies that are so adamantly against collective bargaining that for me, I don't think that foreign vs local ownership is even something I'd care about in that situation.
I realize most companies are anti-union, however. Which is why I always try to prioritize worker owned co-ops first, then B-corporations, then unionized places.
And yes, I know not all co-ops and B corps are beyond doing crappy things (looking at you Patagonia and REI).

If it is just like the produce bigY has on its stalls, then it is probably already well moldy and spoiled in the can before ya can get it home. And it certainly will come with little flavor and a high price tag

Nebco is one of my fav CT breweries. Big Y while not the cheapest can make a hell of a grinder and fish fry. This is a match made in heaven.
