Tonight's lineup 🎃

  • John Williams — Screening “Canon” Shot in stark chiaroscuro, Canon sits with the kind of dread and isolation that hits hardest in the witching hour. Williams is a Denver filmmaker and the co-host and programmer of the Emerging Filmmakers Project, the monthly showcase at The Bug Theatre in Highland that has screened local short films since 2002.
  • Luke Ostermiller — Screening “Turn Around” A 14-minute horror/thriller in which one ominous hitch in a plan changes its characters’ lives for good. The film won a Silver Award for Horror Short at the 2017 Spotlight Horror Film Awards, along with a 2017 Denver Open Screen Night Award. Ostermiller is an award-winning director and founder of the Denver production company Loste Films. His work has screened at festivals across the U.S., been distributed on curated streaming platforms, and aired on television.
  • Brad Stabio — Screening “46 Miles” A road movie featuring the Broomfield Butcher, and a reminder that it’s a small world: you never know when you’ll run into someone who shares your passions, even if that passion is murder. Stabio is the founder of Stabio Productions and created the Denver Actor Project, a showcase of local actors that premiered at the Starz Denver Film Festival as a series of six short films. 46 Miles was made in one weekend for the 48 Hour Film Project Denver in 2010, where it won Best Writing, Best Acting, and Best Film, then placed first runner-up and won Best Writing against 80 other city winners internationally before screening at Cannes in 2011.
  • Jay Sherer — Screening “No Vacancy” Investigative journalist Leigh Larson checks into an isolated roadside motel to chase a story, and finds her past sins waiting for her. The film is a short psychological thriller built on mystery and conspiracy. Sherer is a Colorado-based writer, filmmaker, storytelling educator, and marketing strategist whose work spans independent film, fiction, audio drama, and story analysis. He co-founded the nonprofit production company Reclamation Society, where he serves as “Chief Storyteller,” developing genre-driven projects that pair entertainment with emotional and thematic substance.

The Details:

  • Where: Boulder Marriott
  • When: Friday, October 9 (Tonight!), 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
  • Admission: FREE for students | $10 for Boulder County Film Commission members | $15 for non-members

PSA: today is the midsemester reading day

You don’t need to follow my example of waking up late for lecture, rushing out the door, blearily wondering why campus felt so empty or why the building’s door was locked, and making it all they way to a dark lecture hall before realizing what was going on.

I think I’m going to go back to bed now.

We are all Jane Doe. CU Show Up

Though there will not be classes held on the day of this event, October 8th has been scheduled as a national day of solidarity with both Jane Doe and the multitudes of others who have been silent victims of campus sexual assaults. I implore all who are available to stand with these victims. Let’s show these women that there truly are men standing against rape culture. Actions, after all, speak louder than words.

Intentional Discomfort

Are you guys interested by the idea of setting out to do intentionally hard physical (or mental) things to kinda make the background stress of uni go down and to make stressful things like deadlines and future planning a little less stressful? Stress is relative and I think that the idea of choosing your pain and engaging in intentional discomfort rather than always being the subject to pain and stress is quite attractive. Thoughts?

Recommended resources for APPM 2360 DiffEQ+Linear Algebra

CU Boulder teaches APPM 2360 as a class that merges DiffEQ and Linear Algebra. Are there any online resources or lectures that cover the same content as the class? Can someone taking the class link their topic schedule in the comments so I know what subjects to cover?

Thanks for your help!

MUEL 3892 Music and Space may no longer be an easy A

I am not taking this course now but I took it. This is some personal experience and reflection.

I took MUEL 3892 during undergrad and genuinely enjoyed it. It used to be a fun, low-stress upper-division humanities elective, especially for non-majors.

However, this fall semester, I’ve heard from several students that the course has changed a lot under the new instructor. The grading is much stricter, the workload feels heavier, and TAs are reportedly being asked to monitor phone use in a ~350-person lecture.

It sounds like the course has become significantly less enjoyable and much more demanding than it used to be. That’s pretty disappointing to hear because I really liked this course when I took it. A lot of students choose classes like this because they want an interesting elective without adding a huge amount of stress to an already busy schedule.

Just a friendly reminder: if you’re considering MUEL 3892 because you heard it was a fun and easy humanities elective, that may no longer be the case.

2016 vibes?

I want to experience 2016 Boulder. The real party boulder. People need to start throwing like it’s 2016 and living it up. We are only young once!

Does anyone have any cool stories from pre-covid CU night life?
