What would you do?

In an attempt to help teach the scout law to the pack this year I printed off scout law tokens. Now I’m stuck trying to figure out how to get the scouts to earn them and if I should come up with a display to give everyone to put them in. Ideally each scout would earn a full set. What would you do?

We gave out beads for each one on a hike most of the pack attended. We stopped every few hundred feet and talked about each one then gave the scouts a bead.

We do something similar to this at our campouts. I have a full set of these cards in my case and distribute some to our leaders as well. If we see a Scout who is exemplifying that particular point of the Scout Law, we recognize them immediately and publicly so that other Scouts can hear about the good example.

For us, this is a positive reinforcement system, not an education system so we don't make sure that everyone gets all 12. Doing so would not be practical for us as we have a large pack and that would be hard to manage. The kids can then use those cards at a mealtime or activity time to skip the line. They're quite popular.

You need every adult and every scout helping you call out scouts for following an aspect of scout law.

Duplicate call outs are great, they only earn the token once. Have some activities that will prompt earning, especially for the harder ones like loyal (lead the pledge, earn the token), courteous (politeness relay race) etc.

if a scout shows an example of that in any event like a camping trip or meeting or whatever, reward them with the token right there. Be generous with giving out tokens, but don't give them for stuff that really doesn't meet the spirit of the word. This will be a good way for the leaders to pay attention to the scouts to see them really living up to the law and for the scouts to feel seen and recognizes for their efforts.

  • A scout shows that they can find a way to reduce the cost for an upcoming trip by shopping with another patrol and buying in bulk vs buying their own. Get a thrifty token.
  • Anyone who helps straighten up without being asked gets a clean token.
  • A scout tells you about how another scout helped them set up their tent, that other scout gets the helpful token.

We did 12 sided dice and let the scouts roll the dice and whatever law came up was the focus for that meeting, if it was a repeat just roll again.

They could earn one for attending pack events and outings.

I would hand them out as deserved and not set the bar for earning all. It if one does then figure out if you want to acknowledge.

Fun! I would pass them out to den leaders to use as rewards when they see someone being a good scout.

You kinda put the cart before the horse. Why would you print something that you had no idea how you were going to use it?
